Seasons 6 and 7 just became too campy for their own good. It was as if Menahem Golan and Yoram Globus had taken over the show, turning what had been a decent family saga into a cheap (in quality, if not in terms of budget) action movie. All that was missing was Steve James and Michael Dudikoff running in and busting heads.
What CBS needed to do was to allow Earl Hamner to produce the show as he had wanted, way back when it still was "The Vintage Years." Hamner was never comfortable with his creation had evolved into, and it showed.
