DAYS Spinoff: Beyond Salem Discussion Thread

It is entirely possible for Chandler Massey to do poor work and let down a storyline onscreen even if you've been staring at his nipples for the better part of 15 years.

I don't miss Freddie, and I welcome the recast and think Massey should stay but he's fucked up plenty onscreen. It's not always the fault of the guy who definitely isn't a twink anymore, not that Chandler is either. People whitewash his flaws and lay it all on Smith who is admittedly a clown, but no one is impressed by just stanning him without any critical faculty.

When Chandler is bored it shows. He came alive with Christopher Sean and It looks like he does with Zach Tinker. So Im hopeful

Sonny got boring after Chandler left the first time. Plus they changed Sonny to this controlling husband and Im sorry I never understood how all these gay men that Days introduced wanted FS' Sonny over either CM or even GW's Will. I could buy the  gays wanting ZT's Sonny

Oh I agree. I was speaking more about playing along Will's love intrests

Freddie was good until Wilson Married then he became almost controlling and taking their cash and not asking Will. Then the whole  intro of Paul. If Sonny had told Will that Paul was his ex and in town but he kept that secret

And then from FS return in 2016 to exit in 2020, he was more bad then  good and he sucked when Adrienne died & that surprised me

I am not super fond of the body-shaming either - for the record I think FS, as annoying as he is IRL, is still a cutie as a chunkier man - but I don't think it is entirely fair to say the double standard is due to their respective attractiveness.
Fundamentally CM was always IMO a superior actor and, more importantly, a charming charismatic presence so even when his performances got lazy - and they did get lazy, that is true - he still had enough underlying likability that it didn't turn people off the way FS did.
FS did decent work the first few years and definitely had great chemistry with CM. But when they slowly started to lose the latter - or least it lost its shine in comparison with the Paul pairings - AND his performances got progressively worse, he didn't really have a reserve of goodwill among us because there was nothing left. Add his off-the-show behavior and nobody is in the mood to be indulgent.
Does it help that CM is attractive? Sure. But it is not like they ain't a gazillion other good-looking actors that we collectively rag on with abandon - RSW or Shawn Christian can testify that being hot ain't all that on this board. People will come for you if you suck.
Now, I don't hate FS as much as a lot of other people on this thread do but I don't think the criticism of his late acting is unfair or unwarranted.
But since CM and FS both were tuned out post-Paul, I do have to agree I'd let the writers shoulder most of the blame.

Carrie/EJ is my dream lol and they haven't even worked together yet.

AP and CC just have an easy chemistry and, it's probably my 90's love, but AP has never bothered me ever.  He was an idiot and wooden as an actor, but he was just very 90's JER Days.    I do agree Carrie could branch out to several other pairings, but it is what it is with her schedule I guess.

And yeah, agreed that Dante having animosity towards Gio is very forced and contrived. And it also has me concerned that it means the reveal won't be happening anytime soon.
    • God, I love that woman. Another amazing interview!!
    • We can only guestimate based on other characters. Chelsea was said to be 23 in the first episodee and based on Marttin wanting to run for President in the next election, he's about 30/31. Eva and and Kat are somewhere between that  so Id say closer to 25 or 26
    • no argument here! and as she was singing, i kept wondering how many verses ‘amazing grace’ had. looked it up: 13 — 13! — and i think she must have sung  every one.
    • Yasss, ANITA!!! GET HER!!!   Awww at Smitty calming Martin down.   'Oh, you're the one leaving.' That face like stone. Go 'head, Nicole.    Eva vs Kat...the gift that keeps giving.
    • I have to admit I still have a nagging complaint about timelines - Why aren't we allowed to know how long Ted and Nicole have been married or how old Kat and Eva are? Or for that matter, when Anita last released an album? BTG is a new show with no SORAS or timewarping. MVJ and Guza are working from a fresh bible. There is no need to be so coy about ages and anniversaries, especially when most of the storylines are driven by past events.
    • It was an extremely rare interview even then - I was shocked when I read it (as mentioned I'd forgotten just how far in she went). You could see how hurt and annoyed she was. I'm surprised he thought she came up with the baby story herself. She and Charles Keating did a good job with the material but it was absolute hokum. Even if they loved Carl and Rachel (and clearly they did), I don't see them coming up with stuff that, frankly, read like Geocities fan fic. Malone was clearly hobbled by NBC and P&G, but re-using so many of his old stories and his soap bible instead of actually coming up with material suited to the characters or show did not help. It was also fascinating reading her comments about Rachel being in her, fighting back against the writing, and how she had to try to mediate. Reminds me of Marie Masters talking about how hard it was to say goodbye to Susan when she'd been with her for 40 years. That subject is always compelling, that duality. And it reminds me of Eddie Drueding's comments a year or two earlier about Rachel losing her drive. Clearly Victoria saw her the same way.
    • Seeing this trash get good ratings says nothing good about daytime audiences. It's embarrassing.
    • Cat does feel committed to being a goofball (the other term has been reconsidered in recent years).  I wonder, given her brother Aaron, if Cat was less attractive prior to the surgery?  Remember the 1973 movie The Girl Most Likely to?  My fanfic for the moment is Cat commenting on how people treat her differently now that she is gorgeous.  One assumes that pre-surgery, Cat never had two men fighting over her for a date.  So, it might be fun to see that side of the story.
    • It's probably one of the only conflicts the story will have, aside from Dante being upset with Lulu when the truth comes out. They really needed someone else who actually knows Gio is Dante and Brook Lyn's son and kept quiet.
