Could you really blame Lucinda for being overly concerned about Lily, though?  It seemed like the girl couldn't so much as run to the store for some milk without somebody abducting her, or trying to kill her for her money, or both.  If I had been Lucinda, I'd never let Lily leave her bedroom!

DAYS' Kate Roberts is a smothering, meddling, mother, but she'd frame her son's ex-wife for murdering the man shot dead by said son and do anything, and everything, to try and help her children achieve happiness.

Plus, Lauren Koslow is some of the best physical casting to the actors who've played her children that I've seen in daytime.

Maureen Bauer came to mind immediately from GL.

Alice Horton in DAYS seems like she was a great mom and was especially a great grandmother.  Caroline Brady not as much- though not all her fault, that affair with Victor did damage her kids.

GH- Liz appears to be a pretty good mom.

As much as I like Kathleen Widdoes as an actress (her delivery of dialogue could stretch into the sublime) there was just too much quasi-incestuous overlap in that family to think of them as 'favorite anything' status.

We all know that soap families are tangled and have their scandal but really, in Oakdale, anyone vying for contention of favorite parent should really only be allowed, one maybe two scandalous incidents concerning their children and that's it!

We know Bob and Kim had the Frannie/Sabrina scandal.

Lisa had temporarily abandoned Tom to try to start life elsewhere.

John's dreadful treatment of then-wife Kim is his mark against him as a parent.

We already discussed Lucinda's craven lusting after Craig, until she'd realized that she (and John) had a hand in Sierra's unhappiness in a loveless marriage with Tonio Reyes, then actually apologized to both Craig and Sierra.

Margo's infidelity and abandonment of Tom that resulted in Adam.  Although I rarely watched when Tom had his affair with Emily, resulting in Daniel--that was his negative mark as a parent.

The Snyders alone had about a half-dozen and all pretty much took place between members of the same family while living under Emma's roof at the farm!  IMO, that eliminates Emma from the running for fave soap Mom status.

Okay, I know it's late but after seeing some classic episodes of Guiding Light from autumn 1992, I want to put a word in for Vanessa Chamberlin.  She was a high-powered career woman with a complicated life but she always put her son Billy first.

There are some wonderful scenes of Vanessa telling Billy that although she and his father Billy Lewis love each other, he's going back to his wife Nadine (who he had planned to divorce) because she's pregnant (which, of course, Nadine was faking).  The honesty and the tenderness between mother and son is so refreshing and it was consistent with their relationship.

With today's soaps, children have become all but superfluous, the scenes between Vanessa and  "Little" Billy are gems that seem all too rare these days.

I remember Michelle having some wonderful scenes with both Vanessa and Holly separately in the aftermath of Maureen's death. This one with Vanessa was memorable:

28 mins in (the GL piano theme kicks in at 28:25 - always melts my heart when they used it).

Maeve just had this sophisticated maternal warmth to her that you rarely see.

    • Another character driven show with interconnecting plots that make sense. I like that we go from one character, like Sarah, learning that EJ wants to buy the hospital, casually mentioning it to Xander who now has that intel. The only down today was not seeing Steve and Shawn breaking into the lab. I wonder if Dr Poofy Hair will inform EJ about Xander's call. I loved Abe talking to Chanel about losing Isaac and giving her comfort. And helping her voice her fears about Johnny. Kayla standing up to EJ is great. Kayla, freed from Ron, has been great. I am loving all her air time. And Sarah telling her that EJ must be up to something if he wants the hospital is very smart. She would probably clue in to the sepsis research being the big thing if she wasn't choking to death. I assume Felicity messed up the scones and dropped in cleaning fluid or something. Sarah said it tasted weird. They are never getting that honeymoon, are they? Xander has no clue what job Johnny can do. Johnny knows this too. Xander wants to legitimize his takeover by hiring a Dimera. Johnny wants to stick it to EJ. The honesty is refreshing. I want to like Cat and Chad but they are just so awkward. And none of their scenes work for me. Marlena and EJ was very good. I like her wanting to help him but also scared to death for Belle. Makes perfect sense that she is conflicted. I also liked her softly asking Johnny if he needed her to stay once EJ walked in. Ron never cared about this relationship either, but now she is acting like his granny.
    • Sorry, catching up, and the bolded part, yes! Should have been sued by DH's family for that nasty sh*t too   Anywho, back to the show, Kristina is freaking nuts, she needs to be committed ASAP
    • Angry Dante was hot; sorry, but I'm not going to pretend it wasn't awesome seeing Dominic Zamprogna act his ass off in a way that was not crying.
    • Thanks, interesting and so believable (no Lonatrat or Clones...)Instead of the Lewis family he should have made the Oil family Granger...even if the audience didn't remember that one off character it would have been interesting to tie it into the fictional GL world.
    • Dante needs stick removed from his butt
    • When you bring up what I like to call "Shapiro's Folly" you think Dano's acting choices mattered? I ask because I don't think so. As far as I could tell almost universally the ABC fans hated the very idea of her being on all 4 shows! And, BTW, the headwriters also hated it, at least according to comments made by Passanante. But, it is not hard to imagine that they'd feel that way. And, I agreed. If she wanted success she should have planted "Rae" on one & given up her idea of branding, or whatever it was that she was after.
    • Okay, well her reasons were that she had a mandate to reduce the size of the cast & she had another mandate to make the cast overall younger, so her reason for picking Donna to off was because she was too old.  So, is that what you understand? Or are you thinking of something else? Which if so, I would be delighted to hear about it!  She had arbitrarily picked 50 as the age people needed to be younger than.  And, that is why she got rid of both Bridget & Spencer Harrison.  And, getting rid of Bridget was another of her horrible ideas.  Why do you refer to her as the Face of the Show? Don't feel bad. I am a major Cass fan & I don't remember him with Donna either, LOL! Can we say forgettable? And, yes, Lila was the most last minute of last minutes!!!!
    • This is AWESOME, thank you for taking the time to post this! My first thought: My memory is a lot better than I thought it was, LOL! The first episode I clearly remember watching had a scene of Ed confronting Holly about Christina's paternity. He lamented how wonderful things had been over Christmas, so looks like I started watching the show early 1976. The only thing puzzling me is where is Evie? I thought she was around BEFORE Rita got involved with Tim, but maybe that's one gap in my memory. It makes Rita look slightly better--in that case, she didn't seduce Tim knowing her sister had a crush on him.
    • Oh, well.  At least he can cry into his hoodie.
