You'd think all that lead time would result in a better produced, written and just generally more cohesive show. But nope!

 

The cast and crew must enjoy all the off time though.

 

ETA: Actually I thought they were even further ahead. I think that feeling is more pronounced when they're taping Christmas in July.

They're filming the same number of episodes, aren't they? I think the number of dark weeks saves on paying for studio space? I actually have no idea.

I'm not certain, but I'd think it saves on paying the crew. They are working 16 + weeks less a year, and have to be out by 5 or 6PM each night. No more overtime, no more Saturday tapings, 16 less weeks a year of pay. That's a lot of how they save money from the big budget cut of 2009. The cast of course has been getting less money too, but it doesn't matter to the cast how many weeks they take off. They still get paid per episode. NBC used to own the Burbank Studios until very recently. They sold them off a few years ago, so I'd think they now have to pay rent for the full 52 weeks regardless, since it's the Days studios whether they are dark or not. I don't believe studios 2 and 4 are available for taping anything else during the dark weeks. They did a Facebook Live chat to celebrate the 13,000th episode in January (it was during a dark week) and all of the Days sets were still up, even though they had been dark since November,

I wonder when was the last time they went beyond 6pm. I remember them posting they were working til the wee hours when they did the 2.0 "reboot" with the introduction of Horton Town Square. Perhaps they had to work extra long hours for the "DAYSaster" episodes (the finale before the 2012 Olympics break) 

 

God forbid more than 3 people attend someone's wedding nowadays...

It's interesting to note that Sony let Ron tweak scripts that start airing in mid July.  Ron started week of 1/23 so he was editing furiously I bet to meet the tape schedule in Feb.  Also, they are writing outlines at least three months before taping which means 9 months before air which means they are plotting out a year in advance.  No wonder they miss so many beats.  You have to give the writers kudos for these brutal conditions.

Honestly if i were DAYS i would go dark for 2 months if they strike. Reduce it from 6 to 4 months. Then if its a short strike come back. No need to have a ficore writer. Ron already has alot in the can.

Yeah, with DAYS, a strike would work for their benefit if it lasted a good 4 months or so.

I don't think it would work that way because of contracts and the agreement with SONY. If it was possible, I'd believe DAYS could go dark for 3 months and resume with the same 24 episodes in 3 weeks schedule and get closer to air date. There must be some other reason why they can't do that. It is ridiculous to maintain the outrageous lead time because they can't kill bad S/L or capitalize when lightning strikes - they are operating in a vacuum and they been mostly wrong for a long time.

It's the ridiculous lead time that won't allow the show to improve. With only a few weeks lead time, writers night actually be able to improve upon what really sucks.

You'd think with the show being plotted months in advance...they would be able to cover all beats of a story and be able to better pace all the stories.  I guess not.

It saves SONY Money to shoot like this so they wont be changing that. The show is dark 22 weeks. Nearly half a year that saves some cash

At least! With that much of an early start, the writing should be damn near flawless!
