The irony is Lorimar also produced some of those awful TGIF sitcoms.

It’s important to note that Dallas made Friday nights a big night. By the time the show had deteriorated in the late 80’s, Friday nights no longer had that type of viewership. Those were typically reserved for programming on Tuesdays and Thursdays. While Family Matters eventually won that timeslot, that show itself was a niche hit as was the entire TGIF block (even if it was a 90’s staple), which makes the fall for Dallas look even worse in retrospect.

I agree. I think J.R. should have had a wife before Sue Ellen. When Dallas started in 1978 he and SE had been married for 7 years which has their marriage dating to 1971. Surely as old and as rich J.R. was he would have had 1 marriage under his belt by then. Maybe they could have had the first wife be pregnant when they split up and never told J.R. till she shows up with a teenage son around 1982-83.

There were a lot of popular young actors around that time like C. Thomas Howell, Rob Lowe etc...that could have been considered for the role of the son.

The ex wife would be fun to cast. If Tina Louise had not been cast Julie Gray, I could picture her as the first Mrs. Ewing. Barbara Parkins, Elizabeth Montgomery, or Shirley Jones may have been interesting casting choices.

Well JR was known to be sleeping around. I recall Serena, whom he would call on to unload on literally and figuratively. She ( or an earlier model) could have easily become pregnant with JR's child and knowing that was not part of the deal and would incur JR's wrath, left town and had the baby raised by her mom/sister.

I felt sorry for Tina Louise being killed off before the show took off. Had Julie hung around, Tina would have had a whole new career as part of the Dallas phenomenon and been able to shed the Ginger from the Island tag.

What really struck me about Season 13 (other than the REALLY lackluster scripting and execution) was that the show still had plenty of good storyline ideas, one of them being the introduction of an adult male heir for J.R.

It was great, on paper, to have J.R. deal with the complications of a grown son, which we never would've gotten if we waited for John Ross to grow up.

Sadly, the execution....

I agree.  Even losing the number-one slot to DYNASTY should have made Lorimar and CBS start thinking of some sort of exit strategy, because once a juggernaut like DALLAS loses its' position as the most-watched show on TV - not just on CBS, but on all of TV - it never reaches those heights again.

As someone who worked for one of the industry trades early in my career, I can tell you that executives were likely not comparing Dallas’s performance to one specific CBS show (i.e. “losing out to “Murder She Wrote” as CBS’ highest rated series”) as much as they were looking at the year-over-year performance of “Dallas” itself, relative to the entire network.

”Dallas” lost 10% of its audience from the 1984-85 season to the 1985-86 season. And the drop was even worse just looking at the early 1986 episodes, when the ratings just collapsed and the show fell out of the top 10. And in fairness to Lorimar and CBS, they did act, ousting the show’s creative team and bringing back Patrick Duffy and some of the creative team from 84-85.

The problem was that Dallas needed to go forward, not backward. What kept Knots Landing fresh was continually bringing in fresh talent both in front of and behind the camera over the years. Dallas didn’t do that well.

    • The Saturday 8pm slot usually had the lowest rating of the NBC 4 sitcom lineup for some reason. NBC let Saturday night fizzle, They used 9.30 pm to launch 227 and Amen, both of which moved to earlier in the evening but they  kept Empty Nest following GG for several seasons.  Empty Nest should have moved to 8pm with their strongest new sitcom at 9.30, anticipating that GG would eventually falter. Instead they left them there and stretching the sitcom pool too thinly on other nights. When Grand talk over at 9.30 Thurs maybe Night Court and Wings could have been used on Saturday.
    • @Maxim Great to see your mini-reviews again. There are a number of clips on Youtube of Janice's slow mental breakdown. Christine Jones is just superb. She played the hell out of that role. Something which isn't referenced as much later on is how Mitch pushed Janice's doubts and mental instability for his own ends...until suddenly he didn't want to anymore (I guess he caught on with the audience and the show became wary). I don't want to post a bunch of clips, but this one has a very good confrontation between Rachel and Janice.

    • It really made Oscar the Doorman seem like an imbecile.   I think the show's unusual format & subject manner is what makes EON often seem less "dated" and "old-fashioned" than other shows from that time period.  It never attempted to be especially "trendy" or "modern" -- and its film noir style is pretty timeless.
    • Dallas, Dynasty, Knots and Falcon Crest all had good runs but by 85 they had seen better days. I think they were a victim of the format. After several seasons seeing the same characters front and center viewers were bored. What was once fascinating grew predictable. JR, Alexis etc had to be front and center and after a while their schemes and shtick grew repetitive. JR remarrying Sue Ellen, Alexis constantly trying to get he better of Blake etc Unlike daytime, there wasn't the flexibility to bring in other stories and characters and maybe let the likes JR go backburner. That same mentality also invaded daytime with characters like  Sonny and Victor still peddling the same stuff after decades. I guess the same could be said for MSW eg every week Jessica encounters a crime and solves it,but I think viewers come to that format with a different mindset.
    • Daphnee and Trisha did a live stream on Instagram and confirmed they find out if the show gets picked up in May. This pretty much confirms they're on the primetime schedule like the Bell soaps. Fingers crossed we get a multi-year renewal announcement soon!  https://www.instagram.com/reel/DJSsYb7PDv8/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link&igsh=MzRlODBiNWFlZA==
    • I don't think Lois the character was there.  The Lois we knew from the 90s has pretty much died with this  Gio story crap.
    • Have to agree re MM. The goody two shoes character and writing doesn't help but maybe a more dynamic actor would help Brandon lift his game also. I found the song sequence a little OTT. First of all it should have been shorter and maybe the song fades out and just some music to accompany the montage. I think it would have worked better if Anita had have been alone after everyone left and started tinkling leading into the song, with Vernon coming in observing and then joining her for  a close moment. Everyone standing around felt a little too much. And that closing effect with the two blackscreens meeting was unnecessary. Just a fade out would have been enough.

    • And sadly I think that’s the trivia Both Jeanne Cooper and Eric Braeden went with for years and years. Lol
    • But people were hating so bad on amc and the final year and the ratings sucked. Business wise they made the right call. Oltl who even gained some ratings back and weren’t they higher as GH at one point is a decision and never understood.
