Dallas: Discussion Thread

I haven't watched the later seasons so I may have to take this back as I work my way through the series, but I am glad Season 9 is a dream. Although, not planned from the beginning, it just makes sense that it would be. There's just too many outlandish plots happening at once.

- Mark actually being alive. Let's say he did plot his own death to spare others, but then there's too many other things happening this season that just are too much.

- A whole convoluted story with Marinos Shipping involving Jack and Dimitri and Angelica Nero tied in with J.R. that just has too many random twists and asks viewers to take too many leaps.

- Everyone thinking Jenna's mourning of Bobby to be extreme, yet it's only been a short time since Bobby's passing and none of her actions besides wanting to go see Bobby (his gravesite) in the middle of the night (which was in a stressful moment for her and I don't feel was too irrational) are abnormal. This ties in well with this being Pamela's dream imo

- Pamela being kidnapped in a jungle- plausible. Pamela acting like nothing's happened and being okay with Mark's suggestion that they go visit the potential emerald site the very next day after being held hostage and in a very traumatic situation - insane. Again, ties in well with this being Pamela's dream.

I'm almost done with season 7.  I'm on Jessica first appearance as Clayton sister.

The dream season had

Jenna having a complete breakdown

Sue Ellen hitting rock bottom

Ray and Donna losing their baby

Pam kidnapped

JR being duped by Angelica which was silly.

Jack only being appealing when wearing a blue Speedo

Mark returns zzzzzzzzzzzzz

Jessica was unbalanced. She had a breakdown and had been in a sanitarium. It was discovered she was Dusty mother and not his aunt. Clayton was actually his uncle not Dusty dad. Later in the season everyone finds out that Jessica killed Clayton first wife Amy. Jessica didn't Amy to replace her as Dusty mother.

I feel like that, more than wanting to bring back Patrick Duffy as Bobby, is why Leonard Katzman and others wanted to write off the entire season as a dream.

Its a shame the Jessica story didn't continue the following season or after the dream season. Dusty parentage could've continued involving everyone in the canvas. His father could've been Jock. Imagine JR reaction. He could've been Digger Barnes son or Dusty could've been a Wentworth. So many possibilities.

Angelica Nero was literally straight out of a James Bond movie

. Granted one that's not part of the official series, but that's neither here nor there for this thread.

In the Knots thread it was mentioned that unlike Dallas and Dynasty KL didn't start out with a business based theme, which allowed for greater story flexabilty.

Whereas Dallas had to revolve around Ewing Oil and the Texas oil industry.

That's why it was odd to me that Sue Ellen started the lingerie company as it took away from the central theme and gave her no interaction with the Ewings. Obviously she couldn't be part of the oil industry but some sort of business that might be able to tie in with Ewing Oil would have been a better bet.

Same with Lucy marrying a doctor. It would have been a no brainer to have Lucy hooked up with a junior oil exec so that they could be more involved in the lead  stories.

As it was things just stopped in their tracks when we detoured to Lucy/Mitch. Maybe that was the idea, to give us a brief respite from the Ewing Oil shenanigans, but there wasn't enough time available per episode and Lucy/Mitch seemed like an afterthought.

In retrospect, Sue Ellen's exit was disappointing.

I recall thinking at the time that it was so fun that she got one over on JR and got to leave with an attractive man on her arm.  But, after some thought, her victory seems hollow.  She spent millions on a movie that will never be released.  Even if it were shown in theaters, it would not have shamed JR too much, considering the multiple public embarrassments that he had been through  (foreign oil deals gone wrong, locked in a mental institution, etc..).  I don't recall if John Ross stayed in Dallas (I think he lived on at Southfork), but that's another failure considering how hard she pushed for custody.  And, an aging Britsh director with his own issues is hardly a prize.

I felt already at the time that it was a rather odd story. Like you said, why would it matter that much (or at all) to J.R. if Sue Ellen released that movie? It's not like everyone didn't know already what a scumbag and sleaze he was... But by that time my interest in Dallas was waning anyway so I didn't give it more thought than that.

    • She didn't want a hotel room; doubt she's going to want the apartment room, either. There was no reason to re-arrange the other one. This was the most logical move.
    • I just hope they don't move that lady in their apartment. Same. And Mike seemed to enjoy those scenes.

    • Bill and Smitty was the best part of today. I like the parallel that was drawn between them as "Dupree outsiders." It's similar to Bill's friendship with Ted and I enjoy both of the relationships that Bill has with them. I seriously wonder if anybody behind the scenes thought that the character of Bill was going to be as well liked as he is.  Btw, I see that they're not covering up Mike Manning's tat

Pamela talking like Bernadette Peters isn't really working for me though lol neither is Naomi and Jacob's part in June's storyline.  But I am interested in what's going to happen once Jacob gets Leslie to the police station.

date: Friday, May 16 | Gregori J. Martin, Lynn Martin | Phideaux Xavier Anita and Vernon versus Bill – I love it. Is Vanessa a dominatrix? That's kind of kinky, and Cody seems to love it, too! I love seeing Dana and Ted's dynamic right now; you can sense some kind of passion, and it's differing on both sides. I appreciate us building a connection between Bradley and Nicole. So, we've got the names of the Articulettes: Anita, Sharon and Tracy. A one-night-only kind of performance. Hoping they can pull this off. Dani and Pamela are a hoot together; I love their banter, and I'm so happy to see this friendship continuing to develop on screen. The anvil of Jacob and Naomi liking June being around; that's got to lead to something, no? Douglas, stop playing powerball with Joey. So Nicole wants to sell the house? Girl is jumping over divorce and right to the settling of the assets; thankfully, Vanessa has the keen sense to deny the offer to list the property. Notes: I like seeing different connections being built between characters right now: Bill and Bradley, Dani and Pamela, and Nicole and Vanessa. It's nice seeing things settling. I loved the scene of Pamela cooing over Joey's Instagram, given Cady McClain and Jon Lindstrom's real-life relationship history.
    • Boy, do I agree with this. These writers HAVE to know what they're doing when they add those "We're the Duprees" lines....at least I pray to God they do. If they don't, they're clueless. This family is -- like most families -- deeply flawed and going through it. There's something tone deaf about the "We're the Duprees" pronouncements all over the place.
    • Very interesting in what meal Anita and Tracy share.
    • Thanks for sharing your memories. It's so special to get to talk with your mother about a soap she watched when she was younger that you now watch. '70s feminism had to be much tougher, and other than maybe Search for Tomorrow (where the Kathy character is mostly unavailable in '70s form), Ryan's Hope may be the only soap that delved into this. Jill is such a fascinating character, one I'm not surprised was polarizing with viewers. So much about her probably shouldn't have worked, especially when you think of all the backstory thrown at viewers immediately (a previous love affair with Jack, being adopted and never feeling at home in the Coleridge family, being Frank's "other woman" for much of the decade). Nancy Addison was just so special, and the entitlement and arrogance of Jill felt offset by her vulnerability (which was not the case for the rest of her family).  Mary was also very important for feminist debates, and likely more popular with the audience, but I never really connected with her the way I did with Jill. Maybe because the inherent smugness of the Ryans felt like a wall.  Sometimes I wonder if it perversely helped Jill as a character that she was lumped with a complete dud of a partner for a year and a half, because it humanized her - why are you sacrificing your dignity for this loser?  @safe Thanks for reminding me of more Sarah Felder backstory. A great deal I had forgotten. I appreciate her sticking up for the Pat/Nancy story if it was struck down due to prejudice, but there was so much else wrong with that pairing (I say that as one of the few John Blazo fans). I suppose the narrative about Felder is just too easy to believe (and she never has spoken about her time on the show).
    • Leslie uses Tide with Downy and not the Tide with Oxi!
    • I am not sure either, but I'm riding with the outsiders regardless. There was an opportunity to use Anita to ground the family and make you root for them.  I wonder do they still have chemistry, I thought they did at ATWT.
