Members Juliajms
Right now when I watch the show I feel like I'm visiting with old friends, but old friends who don't really have any news. It's an enjoyable hour, but I find myself wanting a little more.
Members ajsp35801
That's how soap viewers love their stars. If you're not chewing scenery or playing every scene OTT/campy, you're "boring". There is no room for subtlety or understated performances on soaps. Members Khan
Agree. As played as PB, Jack just can't measure up to John as Abbott family patriarch. In fact, aside from Ashley and Traci, I don't see what purpose the Abbotts serve anymore on Y&R. I've been wanting to follow Sally Sussman's lead and just overlook or sidestep the past ten years. However, I have to say that doing so is...tough. Many, many characters are damaged, IMO, and it's not so easy to overlook that fact.
Members DeeeDee
You weren't wrong. She was verging on silent film territory toward the end of her conversation with Jack. Please register in order to view this content +1. And it's affected characterization because the less soap writers focus on traditional soap archetypes they have to skew the canvas to ridiculous degrees to keep the show watchable. That coupled with incessant moral relativism has almost totally ruined modern soap operas.
Members KMan101
LOL. It was hilarious but for all the wrong reasons. At least she ... gives it her all? +
Members MoTheGreat
I don't like this Gloria, she's too much at the wrong time.
Members Soapsuds
Ha...that's Kay Alden's writing to a tee. I know Sussman is the HW but it all smells of Kay.
Members KMan101
I agree. It was unbelievably over the top.
Members Soapsuds
No comparison. He was just as good on ATWT. His meltdown scenes in confessing to Neil's murder were great! If they haven't recast Nick by now they will never ever recast Jack or write him off.
Members Soaplovers
I think the show has improved...but it's only been a month...and Rome wasn't built in a day. I think Sussman is trying the re-establish character and motivation...while trying to finish off pratt's stories. Mariah vs hilary started under Pratt...and I'm hoping that it wraps up..or changes the them teaming up...since Mariah isn't exactly a goody goody. With that said...a visit de om gloria on occasion is ok...but she's too over the top. I like more subdued performances.....kinda wish that Ashley was recast with Brenda E ( the Ashley I remember)
Members GregNYC
That's why most soap stars popular in daytime fail to make it to the big screen. Daytime likes the campy actors, while the big screen prefers understated and subtle actors.
Members DRW50
Critics like them. The average viewer tends to not need or want subtlety. I can't think of many film stars in recent years who have been subtle.
