Jean Passanante best storylines on daytime

She was mostly a disaster at ATWT. Her pushing the Ciccone clan helped destroy the show. That being said, the one thing she did right was the Jennifer/Gwen baby switch. That storyline was very well crafted, and involved most of the show's cast.

I think you may be overestimating how much influence she had as there were claims at the time that Goutman was basically writing the show.

I've always thought she was a hack, ever since her AMC run, and I still do, but AW was dead and ATWT was also pretty much dead (thanks to P&G's slow killing and the disgusting hack Sheffer) before she took over.

People here have given her increasingly outsized importance in the genre because they don't like a troll.

If you asked me this question about Bill Bell, Nixon, Labine, Reilly, Falken Smith, Curlee, Guza, and countless others over the years I could give you  stories that impacted me as a viewer.  Her work has always left me with an eh feeling.  On ATWT I enjoyed a couple of her stories, but not enough that I can remember anything.  Maybe that horror movie mini story?  She is a bland storyteller.  Not slow, not methodical and deeply felt.  Just bland.  Nobody should ever make her a HW.  She isn't even just conservative. It's boring.

Agreed. She's bland. She's one of those writers that goes through the motions and does what she's told, and it's clear in the writing. If ABC or Frank want Sonny on every day, by God she'll write that. That's what kind of writer she is. If she was left alone for the babyswitch on ATWT, then I suppose that I can give her some props for but even then ... doesn't she really work best as a breakdown or whatever she does?

This is the truth

I'd say most of the credit for Reid goes to the guy who played him. The outline was generic, and Van Hansis was too asexual to have that much chemistry with him. With anything but the perfect actor Reid would have flopped. Given that Kriezman's main role as HW seemed to be getting another excuse to have Tom Pelphrey yell his lines, I don't think he deserves much praise.

For me the best thing was Lucinda and Barbara, and Molly's return, which was better written than about 90% of the show's last decade.

I don't know how that story got ratings. It was so badly done and written yet ATWT numbers improved during it.

Eric Sheffer Stevens made the role golden. I don't know if another actor could have given the role justice.

It was great seeing more Lucinda and Barbara but I just hated Babs storyline. I had forgotten about Molly's return.

Beyond her not being a good writer, I'd say that's mostly because it's a troll thread.

People paying her so much attention ends up validating her more than someone praising her work. That's one of the reasons I sometimes tried (and unfortunately failed) not to talk about writers I hate, because they don't deserve the attention. But here it's Jeannie P 24/7.

    • Like a lot of soaps, once relatives left, they kinda dropped off the face of the earth and out of conversations. I don't know why writers do that. If they just don't want to confuse viewers, or don't think it matters, or want the liberty kind of revise history to make their stories work. After Josh left in '84, he's barely mentioned. Even when Billy's railing against Kyle and refusing to accept him, it'd be the most natural thing in the world to say "Kyle's NOT by brother, JOSH is!" and I don't think he ever really says that.  The only writer I can recall who didn't do that is Doug Marland on ATWT.
    • IIRC, there is a line during this time period where Reva says something like Marah is her first-born child, which fans were not thrilled with.  Dylan makes a few appearances through the rest of the show (and a much later recast that isn't really worth talking about, with a face that is familiar to you). He will make one briefly during 1997, if you get that far.
    • Another great episode.  GH has been pretty good this year, loading up the chamber, because now there's many bullets to fire, and another one was fired today when Nina found out Michael is the father of Sasha's baby.  I hope this secret comes out at the hearing.  I've also liked the slow burn with Gio/Emma. There's just so many things to look forward to on this show now.  GH is finally back to being really good.
    • I'm all for it. Get them Nina!

    • I am blown away that Christie Clark is 51, and she debuted 39 years ago. They gave her a lovely script today.  But, I could not think of any other examples in culture of someone able to jump right back into the skin of a character, after virtually retiring from acting years ago. I was trying to recall if Carrie left for a bit with Anna after Roman died (because she wasn't at Bo & Hope's wedding), and then returned as a pre-teen Christie?  Or if she was just SORASed off-screen?  But, whenever I see the character I am reminded how much more trauma she's endured than Sami, and yet she remains such a nice person.
    • Weirdly I feel like Nina was the most sus about the entire situation.  Normally I would have given this one to Carly, but Nina was always kind of trying to make it make sense. I think Nina (and Alexis) are actually really smart characters.  They just constantly get in their own way with dumb plans lol.
    • Rewatching some of 1991 I had to appreciate what a strong week March 5-12 1991 was. Cassandra dies, Nina shoots David, Sheila switces the babies, and drunk Nikki all occurring simultaneously. 1991 and 92 were pretty strong overall.
    • Still loving all the Gio fallout, but the scenes that really surprised me this episode were the ones with Nina and Maxie. I was not expecting Nina to be the one to put together all the pieces about Sasha's baby daddy. This custody hearing is about to get explosive!
    • I really hope after the secret comes out their interactions don't stop
    • BAHAHA  I needed that laugh today. Talk about one note.  I would put Derek and Ashley a notch above Dani. Dani's scenes are basically rinse, lather, and repeat for 60 episodes and counting.  It's as if she was transported from the soap opera Passions onto this soap.  MVJ should put aside her friendship/admiration for Karla and look at the fact that this character isn't wroking as written.
