Actors who always had a mature/matronly look

I love Marla Adams' hairdo. smile.png

I love as well the emphasis on action and character. A far cry from latter-day promos, which were all about skin, skin, and more skin.

Finola Hughes was a year younger than I am now when she joined GH in 1985 (I'm 24), but there was something about her that seemed older--not in a haggard way, but in a mature, more sophisticated way.

I honestly wouldn't have guessed that Fiona Hutchison was just about to turn 27 when she joined OLTL in 1987.

Florencia Lozano, to be perfectly honest, has always looked a bit older than her age to me.

Erika Slezak was my first pick, too. IRL she is several days older than my dad, and exactly 2 weeks older than Bill Clinton. Seeing photos from her on OLTL in the early/mid-70s, she doesn't look much different then than she does now.

Judith McConnell, when she first joined SB, had just turned 40. Somehow she still looked believable as the mother of grown children. Now she is the star of a current Walgreen's commercial as the "pedicure lady":

That just didn't make sense to me, since Austin was with Carrie and Billie was with Carrie's Uncle Bo. Meanwhile, Kate must've been 4 years old when she gave birth to her first child. But yeah, Billie definitely had a mature look to her even in '92.

I would have to agree with both of those. Susan Flannery also gets a mention from me. I came across some photos of her from the 70s in an old soap magazine, and she looked matronly back then too.

I disagree with the Susan Lucci mention from someone though - Erica never looked 'mature or matronly'. There were times when she was dressed in business suits most of the time, and she looked the part of a CEO, but matronly? Nope. It was plausible for Erica to be pregnant in the 70s, and Susan looked young enough that it was still plausible for Erica to be pregnant by Dimitri in 1997 when AMC had her miscarry. Actually for a few years beyond that, she still could have pulled off a late in life pregnancy story for Erica, despite being older than the character was.

As far as mature-looking actors go, David Canary gets a nod from me. He would have been believable as a father to a grown man back in the mid 80s with that bit of silver in his hair.

    • I'm good with the gushing, too. There aren't many soap icons like John Black, and that's important to celebrate and remember. And yes, life does go on for other characters, but as they say, timing is everything. Going sky diving the day before the funeral? And during a week of shows that were so powerful emotionally? No.
    • No. There might have been a slight pause for dramatic effect after his "death," but pretty soon after they showed him in France getting plastic surgery and getting involved with his doctor, then planning with her to bring Christina to France. (She thought he had good reason to do it; she wasn't a bad person or anything). Now that I think of it, there must have been some kind of pause before that, during the 70s, because when Rita was accused of killing a patient when she lived in Texas, part of the backstory was that Roger had been there, too. Not sure exactly when or how long that was.
    • Thank you. She’s disgusting.
    • I've already stated that I don't like Doug being written as this meek and submissive. It was so lame watching him leave her like that. Vanessa can divorce him, but she then needs to get her thot ass into therapy. She's not only having sex with every guy she runs into, but is now having  sex with a skeevy perv on a poker table. I'm going to give the BTG some credit here. For months, many on this board were delighting in the Vanessa/Joey flirting and what they saw as chemistry. I think we're now seeing what the writers always intended -- that Joey is a disgusting POS wannabe mobster.
    • John Black actually was the ultimate good guy soap hero. So I don’t mind the town gushing over him. It’s deserved.
    • Be glad it wasn't a Perry production.

    • The whole town gushing over John Black as if he was a saint is eye rolling.  I guess death really colors people's memories over his many flaws, but I guess that is normal and human nature. I'm still confused as to why Leo hasn't been written out.  The actor stank up two soaps with his sub par acting, what does he have on TPTB's to remain on these soaps.   What's the point of Cat?  I hope the new head-writers figure out her purpose and develop her character. And I much prefer scenes not focusing on John's death because life does go on for the world when someone passes.
