Retcons and Rewrites

Rex and Cassie are Roman's and Kate's children, only Marlena gave birth to them on The Island. Just a horrible contrived way to give Roman and Kate a connection on top of being a horrible contrived storyline anyway springing out of a horrible contrived storyline that saw them as alien beings or whatever they considered them initially.

John is Ryan Brady DiMera is a close second.

Lisa and the whole Scott Eldridge long lost son....ATWT....That had to be Douglas Marland worst story.

That wouldn't even crack my top ten of ill-considered Marland stories. At least they connected it to a true gap in Lisa's Oakdale history. And it fit with Lisa's persona---she certainly wasn't interested in raising children at the time. Scott (at least Joe Breen's version) was an intriguing character. The story simply derailed after his HIV status was announced.

Carly's "baby brother" who turned out to be a sister was needlessly (and almost hilariously) inconsistent in some awkward attempt to base their history in Oakdale.

Lyla being rewritten as some cruise-obsessed, absentee mother to explain Katie's "damaged", narcissitic , morally-challenged Barbie, bunny and lamb collecting idiot savant blew chunks.

And the rewrite of Janet, from stuck-in-high-school bimbo/neglectful mother/man-chaser to lasagna-making EarthMother-in-training drove me nuts.

How? By saying Holly lied this whole time about messing with Luke?

No, by saying Stavros Cassadine switched the real Luke with a doppelganger in the middle of that avalanche where he was presumed dead.

Viki was raped by her father - OLTL

I concur wholeheartedly, Carl. Viki's relationship with Victor was much more tantalizing and complex, IMO, without retconning Victor into a pedophile.

The same thing with John Black on DAYS.

Especially when -- come on, DAYS -- it's pretty effing obvious who and what John is (i.e., Stefano's own son).

Did I miss you? Must we ask such an obvious question? Of COURSE I missed you, SoapBoy! :)

It was resolved in passing last week. Marlena mentioned it being resolve when talking with Hope about Kristen.

Yes, thanks for mentioning Lyla.

I agree about Scott.

You should write up Marland's 10 story mistakes in the ATWT thread.

It also opened the door to weakening Viki immensely as a character and then to the Tess story, which...were just wrong.

Maria Bell's retcons were by far the worst in Y&R history. They made LML's Cane/Phillip retcon look like Shakespeare.

I also hate how B&B retconned the Brooke/Ridge/Taylor story to make it look like Brooke was always the love of Ridge's life and Taylor was "the other woman" when up until 2005 it was the other way around.

That reminds me that I tuned into B&B the other day and Brooke/Taylor were arguing about whether she kissed Bill. And Brooke was like, "you don't even know me!" She literally said that and my head spun, like, I think she knows the woman who was creeping after Ridge for years.

how so?

I wholeheartedly agree. I hate the damage that was done to Ridge and Taylor. The original Bell got them but Brad flipped the script on this

Killing off Stuart and making Adam out to be his killer on AMC (a.k.a.: what finally drove me away from the show after sitting through many indignities until the last few months of the show when they brought him back to life).

Proclaiming that Felicia was a deadbeat mother on GH even though everybody and their mother who watched this show throughout her tenure saw otherwise.

I wouldnt call either of those retcons. The AMC story didnt have another character as the killer. The retcon was making Stuart alive, not making Adam responsible

Felicia was a great mother when her kids were young but she started to become an awful one in the late 90s when Maxie was a preteen and Georgie was still. We saw her morph into this selfish woman who craved adventure and was bored by the normal lifestyle of being a wife and mother. Its not like they just had people going around saying she was a bad one without showing us how she became one. She became a deadbeat when she flatout walked away from them and didnt step back in town except to attend the funeral of one and now years later. And that was just an extension of her earlier characterization

I don't know if I ever believed Ridge and Taylor as the fated love. Taylor was written as somewhat calculating early on, a potential enemy of Stephanie's, and Brooke was the one Caroline thought should be with Ridge. Making her the patron saint of Los Angeles took away much of the interest, so the show kept breaking them up, over and over, and giving them weird stories like Taylor deflowering James while they had hypothermia.

I never got the impression that Taylor was ever written as the "love of Ridge's life" either. He loved her, yes, but Ridge/Taylor were never written as "meant to be forever and ever" the way he was with both Caroline and Brooke. Even in the years that Brooke and Ridge weren't together, the show always hinted at their connection and that they were somehow star-crossed lovers.

I don't think Ridge's relationship with Taylor ever had the same passion, intensity, and love as the ones he had with Brooke and Caroline.

Taylor wasn't "the other woman," but Ridge's heart always belonged elsewhere and she was always going to be second best no matter what.

AMC:

Greenlee as Jackson's daughter. It made no sense and you could tell the show knew it because Greenlee was forever referring to "Dad, this..." or "My father that..." in the attempt to Jedi Mind Trick the audience into thinking the relationship made sense. I'll never forgive the way that bony narcissist was forced on him while Lily and Reggie where shuffled out the door. Jack spent most of his time and energy bowing and scraping to that shrew in some misguided effort to "make up" for not being there. Jack's relationship with Greenlee was very much like his relationship with Erica. He was forever a punk trying to prove himself.

Damon as Tad's son. It's not like Tad didn't have enough children and they completely trashed the character of Hilary in order to give Tad one more child to briefly obsess about. They could've just made Damon a kid that Tad grew to love and wanted to make a part of the family. There was no reason to eviscerate Hilary especially since they kept her offscreen the whole time.

OLTL:

Just about everything they ever did with Jessica. I don't know what happened but for some reason the show decided that absolutely everything Jessica was and everything we'd ever seen about her upbringing had to be destroyed. She went from being the adored baby girl of Clint and Viki to a twin...with a different father...who was a pervert, rapist and murderer. Then she was a victim of child abuse...because her mother's alter took her to bars...and let some guy make kiddie porn video of her...so she developed DID. Everything about Jessica's life from the circumstances of her birth on was retconned in the most disgusting and destructive manner possible.
