Soap Opera Weekly -- RIP

I liked SPW so much that I subscribed to it for a year many, many, many years ago. However, I always found the issues in the grocery store before they hit my mail box so I gave it up.

Marlena and Mimi were my favorite columnists. I did not always agree with them, but I thought that many of their criticisms and praise were warranted.

Classy interviews, gorgeous photos and thoughtful opinion pieces.

Did someone roll back the clock to 1998 and forget to tell me?

This is most definately not a sad thing, given that SOW has been biased in favor of the "big name" soaps since day one.

That's not necessarily true. I recall SOW doing some LOVING- and ANOTHER WORLD-centric covers back in the day.

With soaps going off the air, one by one, of course the soap magazines has to go too. sad.png

BTW: Has SOW ever had a B&B cover, at least during THIS millennium?!?! NO soap mag ever has B&B covers!!!!!!!!!

That's not necessarily true. I recall SOW doing some LOVING- and ANOTHER WORLD-centric covers back in the day.

"Back in the day" before it went "tabloid looking", it had all the shows on the cover one time or another. It was pretty fair. I know One Life had many covers over the years from James Depavia comming back as Max to Viki's DID to "Who killed Georgie Philips." and ABC soaps in depth had never been that generous and they only had to cover three soaps but they more often than not had GH on the cover every single (bi-)weekly. OLTL maybe got one or two covers a year if they were lucky. SOW was very fair with all the soaps. it's had everything from Loving to Port Charles (the spin-off of GH.)

Ive always hated SoW covers. I preferred the look of SOD and SID instead

The only soap magazine I ever bought with my own money was a SOW with Jean Randolph and Dorian in a wedding dress on the cover. RS looked beautiful and that was my favorite s/l ever. I still have it.

I knew the magazine probably wouldn't last much longer when I was informed by their subscription department that they were stopping subscriptions and only having newstand sales. SOW wasn't too bad, but its look came across as too tabloid-y. I actually preferred SOD more.

Some B&B covers

This photo is a sad reminder of how beautiful Hunter Tylo once was. Here first rounds of plastic surgery did wonders to her... it was like she went bargain basement in her latter years.

The best cover was All My Children's Who Killed Will? I also liked Guiding Light's Blackout.
