Not even LEMONADE?

*falls over*

But seriously, we will have to agree to disagree. :)

Lemonade was terrible too!

The last album I bought was I Am... Sasha Fierce and that was 14 years ago. Since then her music has gone downhill.

She's largely become an albums artist since '4' but I think this is her most singles and pop oriented album since I Am... Sasha Fierce (an album that hasn't aged well at all and is amongst her weakest work, IMO). Also appears to be a nod to the contributions of black performers (like Donna Summer) to the world of dance/house music, which is often overlooked by not just white audiences, but black audiences as well.

The Neptunes wrote and produced said song and gave Beyonce and her record label permission to clear the sample. Honestly, I'm not quite sure what point Kelis is trying to make for a song she didn't produce or has any legal claim to. Sampling is also hardly a unique practice in urban/pop music. It kind of is what is if she doesn't have the legal grounds to prevent it.

It seems like Kelis’ true beef is with the Neptunes over song credits. If she did indeed get screwed out of song credits, as she contends, she needs to pursue that legally. Her stated contention with Beyoncé is what she perceived as the disrespect between two Black women in the music industry because according to her, Beyoncé didn’t even give her a “heads up” that the song was being released, although she did admit to being sensitive.

Let’s not pretend that Beyoncé has never been sued though. Des’ree successfully sued and got an entire album pulled so that Des’ree’s song could be taken off the album before Beyoncé’s album was re-released. Also, speaking of Lemonade, didn’t a visual artist have lawyers issue Beyoncé and her record company a “cease and desist” order because the video used artwork without the artist’s permission? Beyoncé has interpolated other artist’s work, it’s just that very few have done anything about it, probably many have considered it flattering.

I did like the concept of Lemonade and I found it amusing how uncomfortable some people were with the album.

Admittedly, I do prefer Solange’s work, as an artist, I like when artists take risks and draw on traditions to create something completely different.

It seems like much more of the press for this album has ended up being about fighting or her fans dragging people (Kelis, Diane Warren, Monica Lewinsky) over the music itself.

I saw the headline this morning on CBS Morning, and it didn’t surprise me because Beyoncé has had to recall and remove a song from an album in the past. Like I said upthread, it happed with Des’ree’s song, which was also used without her permission.

And I can already see the clubs eating this up. And the remixes that will probably spring from it.

Oof. I like Beyoncé and will defend her vocals, but this little snippet from her Isley Brothers collab feels so strained. Hopefully it’s just an iffy clip, but if this is  putting their best foot forward as a sample, yikes:

Beyoncé sent Madonna this note with flowers. Madonna just posted to her IG story:

This is my favorite Beyonce album. Like every song on first listen, i wanted to sit with it for awhile to see if it was a faze, but i love each song even more, now.

I love how how she's using her voice on this album. Love the production. Love the sequencing. Love the messages of the songs, etc. I just love how good i feel listening to the records, she really was having fun recording this, you can feel it!

The Standout tracks to me: Alien Superstar. Cuff It. Plastic off the sofa. Virgo's Groove. Heated. America has a problem. Summer renaissance.

I hope we at least get one music video lol I know Bey can rise up in the charts without one, just to say that she can, but I would love to see one for Break My Soul and Alien Superstar.

Looking at your standouts makes me think I need more listens. 😜 jk. That's to the credit of the album that my favorites (outside of HEATED which I still feels perfect for the jewel in my crown) keep changing with each listen.

OMG!!! I love the remix and the callouts. Toni even got a shout out and I LOOOOOOOOOOOVVE me sum Toni Braxton.
