That stuff with Nina and Pilar is like fine wine in a sea of grape juice - "Which husband?" "Oh, she's every man's friend." It's too bad that didn't lead anywhere.

I never knew that Brooke and Nina were best friends. When did that start exactly?

Cliff accusing Nina of being manipulative like Palmer is interesting. I wish they'd gone somewhere with this idea.

I never knew Barbara and Matt interacted.

Julie feeling trapped and isolated in Pine Valley after her adventures in New York is a great story, or potentially a great story, but Julie's so wan, it's tough to connect. I do think the dialogue in the scene with Nico is first rate.

Love seeing Phoebe snap at Adam.

Barbara is just a huge vile bitch. Unbelievable. She does her best to taunt Erica into having a miscarriage when Erica won't play along with her.

The Nick/Mona scenes are just beautiful. Nick saying he's still in love with Erica and probably always will be. They had such a fascinating relationship. I wish it had had closure on the show in those last years.

Love seeing Nina sparring with Pilar. "Which husband?" There's pure ice under all the sweetness and good manners. I wish we could see more of it.

So that's Cliff's house? I thought it was the boarding house. Oh well.

Phoebe's plot is a good filler story. Fun.

I'm glad they were branching Cecily out into other stories (I guess because they knew that Charlie was leaving the show).

I didn't know Sofia Landon was on the show at this time. Who did she play?

Chilling cliffhanger with Cindy.

Another brief moment with Silver and Erica. I'm always a little surprised that Erica isn't more guarded with her or resentful of her being with Jeremy.

Susan Lucci and Walt Willey had some serious chemistry here.

That guy is too young to play Jeff, and it's weird seeing him paired with Hilary, who should have been about 15-20 years his junior. And they're so handsy after barely meeting.

Nice to see so much of Phoebe's place.

Why was Cecily scheming against Hilary and Mitch?

Mitch looks like Dave Coulier.

Erica was so melodramatic in her prayer, but she was very much in control when she was with "Noelle." I like that.

Really enjoyed everything with Ross, Ellen, and Mark, then Ross with Adam and Stuart. Ellen and Mark made a good couple, with real potential to be a patriarch and matriarch if they'd been given a chance. Stuart trying to comfort Ross, only for Ross to turn against him in paranoia - so sad. I love the talk between Adam and Stuart too. Stuart loved his family so much. I feel like in later years the show sometimes just remembered his relationship with Adam.

I really like Hilary. I like that she refused to run after Mitch when he believed the worst of her. So rare. Can you imagine that on a soap today?

That's Courtney Simon, who recurred on AMC for years as Dr. Anna Tolan, in the commercial at 40 minutes.

The show had such a huge cast at this point, to the point where some just pop up for one scene (like Creed Kelly).

Hey, the woman Creed is threatening played Clarissa's mother on Clarissa Explains It All!

Brooke & Nina were best friends when I started watching circa 1980.

Julie was always bland, imo. Of the three actors in that triangle, I always thought Rosa Nevin would be the breakout star but it seems like she turned out to the be one less known for anything else (Robert Duncan MacNeil did a Start Trek show and Lauren Holley did Picket Fences).

I loved bitchy Barbara versus Erica. I always wished Barbara had teamed up with Natalie against her.

Phoebe hated Mitch because he wasn't good enough for Hillary, just like his sister Donna wasn't good enough for Chuck. I loved how Mitch was brought on the show; we saw him riding his motorcycle into Pine Valley one day and a couple of days later he showed up at Cortland Manor, asked for the lady of the house and collapsed. He didn't know Donna had divorced Palmer.

I can't wait to watch this episode later today. I loved the Palmer/Natalie/Ross/Ellen/Mark story!

I liked having characters pop up midway through for a scene or two and never knowing which characters would be on each day; it meant if you switched the channel you might miss something.

I always liked Hillary and really wish they'd brought her back before the network run ended. She should've been involved with Tad again before Dixie's final return from the dead, imo!

I never got why they never tried to bring Hillary back for the Damon story. Tad getting involved with Hillary before Dixie came back would've been a good story, though I'm not sure if AMC had the time to tell it.

I think Ellen and Ross/Mark would've been good heads of a family had Julie been more successful, much like how Tad kept Joe and Ruth viable.

Speaking of Donna and Chuck, I watched some scenes recently on HamiltonBernique's channel with Donna blaming Chuck for their baby dying that were good.

I don't know if you all know about this channel already, but they have a few episodes up from 1987 if you are looking for more from that era:

Is that Chuck on the top left? Yes, that is the recast-phil.

I recognize Paul, Margo, Nick, Anne, Ruth (I like that hairstyle for whatever reason), Kitty, Erica (Damn she looked good. Maybe not the most flattering picture but still), Kate, Joe, Mona, Pheobe, Linc, and I guess that guy on the far right is Hal. The rest I am not sure about. I wonder were Dr. Charles Tyler is? And is that Claudette on the far right/center row.

She was 63. Ms. Blythe was born in England in 1947. She met Richard Monette — former Stratford artistic director — in England as they performed in the erotic revue Oh! Calcutta! in 1970. Said Stratford general director Antoni Cimolino, "Richard was wise enough to ensure it was a life-long friendship." In 1972, she emigrated to Canada and spent three seasons at Ontario's Shaw Festival before Monette brought her to Stratford. Ms. Blythe, known as one of the more beautiful actresses of her generation, first joined the festival company in 1976 to play leading roles in The Way of the World, The Merchant of Venice and Antony and Cleopatra. In 1978, she appeared in the Festival's first production of Titus Andronicus. More recently, she was Maria to William Hutt's Feste in Stratford's 2001 production of Twelfth Night. She last appeared on the Stratford stage in 2006 when she played Mistress Quickly in Henry VI Part 1, directed by Monette, and that same year she staged her one-woman show Fanny Kemble at the Studio Theatre. Most recently she appeared as Judge Evelyn Rowe in the 2010 television movie "The Ties that Bind." Blythe said she identified with Kemble because they both were British-born actresses who had spent most of their careers in North America. Other Stratford roles included Gwendolen in The Importance of Being Earnest; the title role in Miss Julie; Rosaline in Love's Labour's Lost; Desdemona in Othello; Margery Pinchwife in The Country Wife; Elmire in Tartuffe; Gertrude in Hamlet; Liz Essendine in Present Laughter; and Goneril in King Lear opposite Christopher Plummer. She repeated the latter part in her sole Broadway appearance. Ms. Blythe is survived by her husband, Jean Beaudin; her father, Richard Blythe; her brother, Ben Blythe, sister-in-law Andrea Schlieker and their two children Lily and Phinn. A funeral service will be announced at a later date.         GABI'S COUSIN             AL CALDERON           2/22/1995 - Present THE HAVES AND THE HAVE NOTS   Jimmy Gonzalez    2020 DAYS OF OUR LIVES    Javi Hernandez   10/28/2024 - Present AND THE X FACTOR     Contestant     2013 THE DEAD GIRL'S DETECTIVE AGENCY      Edison Cruz     2018 THE WALKING DEAD: WORLD BEYOND     Barca     2020 - 21 STEP UP: HIGH WATER    Johnny One    2018 - 19; 2022 Upcoming Television FLIPPING OUT    Coach Jared     TBA    Post Production movies SUMMER CAMP     Matt    2010     (Made for T. The two actors offer insight on working with director Jonathan Munby, favorite roles and those who have inspired their careers. Michael Hayden: Most recent role? Father and husband. Before that Denton in the Roundabout Underground production of Language of Trees. Favorite Role? That's a hard one. Billy in Carousel, Hal in Henry IV. Pre-performance ritual? At some point in the day drill my lines. Warm up my voice. Pray. Beyond that, I keep it pretty loose. Each part is different. Some need quiet, some need loud music. I look for ways to be ready, but not comfortable. Ready to take the first step. Or if not ready, than at least willing.    This is you second production with STC, why did you want to return? That's easy. Michael Kahn and his staff produce great work. Doing Sweet Bird of Youth with Michael was a pure joy from beginning to end. I had loved Michael as an acting teacher at Juilliard and I loved him as a director. Also, there are very few places where one can do great classical roles. The Shakespeare Theatre is one of them and I hope to keep coming back. Why were you interested in playing Teodoro? I have never done a Lope de Vega play, though I had seen some of his other works while studying in Spain. This was a play I knew nothing about. I was drawn to it because it was funny, sexy, incredibly human in the see saw passions of the characters, and, of course, the language. I think the translation is brilliant and I hope we do it justice. As for Teodoro, we need to get to know each other better before I can talk much about him.   This is your first production with Jonathan Munby. What intrigued you about his work? In all honesty, I knew nothing of his work before I was called about this project. But after speaking with him for only a few minutes, I was certain that I wanted to work with him. He was able to articulate his vision for the play with such clarity. He has a long list of great work in England, my second home, and I'm grateful that he was willing to take a risk with me without having seen any of my work. We are lucky to have him. Most influential person in your theatre career? I stand on a lot of shoulders when I do my work, but I suppose the most influential person in my career, as well as my life, is Elizabeth, my wife. Any work of art, at least to me, is a work of the heart. She has mine and therefore has a presence in all I do. Michelle Hurd: Most recent role? I most recently played Laurel in Gossip Girl. It was fun for me as I often play cops and lawyers and doctors and this time I had the opportunity to play a mean fashionista ... and wear cute outfits and heels. Favorite role? This is always a hard question. I sure enjoyed the entire experience of playing Jessie Brewster in The Violet Hour. It was great working with Richard Greenberg and actors Mario Cantone and Hamish Linklater—great, generous guys. But I feel very at home on a set or onstage so it's hard to narrow it down. Pre-performance rituals? I'm old school. I like to do some kind of relaxation exercise and a vocal warm up. This is your first production with STC, why were you interested in working here? I have always heard wonderful things about STC.  It is a highly respected place and the space is beautiful. I want to work with talented, motivated, interesting people that inspire and I've found them here at STC and in Jonathan. Why were you interested in playing Diana? What's not of interest with Diana? She's an incredibly complex, exciting character. There is a lot on her shoulders in the construction of the play—that responsibility is scary and a welcome challenge. I've always been attracted to high text and period plays, but seldom have the opportunity to exercise that. I'm looking forward to it. This is your first production with Jonathan Munby. What intrigued you about his work? The man himself. He is one of the major reasons that I wanted to do this play. As soon as I met him, I felt an instant collaborative energy, respect and a desire to do better. That makes for a fulfilling process. Who was the most influential person in your theatre career? My parents. They met onstage in a play. I grew up watching my Dad on Broadway, in films. My sisters act, dance, even choreograph stage combat. Truly, theater is like the sixth member of our family. The arts have always been part of our lives, our livelihoods. I know nothing else. I even met my husband onstage. • I view the Duprees as being very insecure and paranoid about losing their status so they proclaim 'I'm a Dupree' just as much for themselves as their enemies.  I swear Nicole is the Marilyn Munster of the Duprees. And the lack of in-law interactions on the show has always baffled me.  When my parents were alive and we would visit family... my mom had close ties with both of her sister in laws (i.e. she and two other women were all married to brothers) and my dad got along well with his brother in law (Both of them were married to sisters).    So I'm glad that we're starting to get some in law interactions because those relationships are just as valuable as the ones amongst the actual family members.  Jacob/Smitty/Bill/Ted should all have some history/interactions with one another... though I admit I wish there was a hetero Dupree male because than we could have a daughter/sister in law that might not gel/get along with the other Dupree women and is closer to the Dupree men/male in laws.
    • Last I saw she was teaching acting (?) at a college, but that was probably ten-twenty years ago.  She and Michael Levin had immense chemistry. This is one time where all the stuff about what was in character didn't matter to me - pairing them up just seemed like a no-brainer to me. The Joe pairing sapped Siobhan's spirit, and while I liked Rose/Jack, it was clear someone at the show did not.

    • Those are great ideas. That could adapt the whole claim that Gus was meant to be Rita's son. A child born of Ed and Rita and influenced by Roger would be great drama. I should probably have Philip's long-lost son be mid-twenties to make sure he's in a different peer group than Lizzie.  I do think Frank was an easy cut in the show's last decade, but I could at least say he was a good part of the show for his first 5-10 years and had natural relationships with the other Coopers, who were heavy in story. I don't hate Ron Raines, but there were no good times with him for me. He was more suited to Werther's Original ads. He seemed happiest when he got to have sweet scenes with little Lizzie, just doing grandpa stuff. I agree that Amanda returning at that time would have had more of an impact than a stunt cast for Alex. Joan was terrific, but the show couldn't afford her long term, and they needed a strong Spaulding long-term.  Great final moment for Alan. I never knew Taggert planned to bring Alan-Michael back. What might have been...
    • Not to mention, there are an equal number of men versus women in each opening: seven women and five men (including the core four Duprees).
    • Well, the head writer obviously knows nothing about writing romance.  He writes couples, but there is nothing romantic about them.  They just pair-up for a year or so, and then move on to somebody else.   He needs to give us a couple of long-term romantic pairings that struggle to get together, and make mistakes despite their deep love for one another -- couples like Victor and Nicki used to be, or like Doug and Julie, Bill and Laura, Alice and Steve, Rachel and Mac, Holden and Lilly, Tara and Phil, etc, etc.   Everything this dude writes is so superficial and lacks any kind of depth.  Even his silly business plots aren't really plots -- they are just musical chairs for who is CEO here, or there, and then over there.
    • @P.J. No, you are not alone in this. I agree, the writers have overused "I'm a Dupree." I get it, but if they could pace themselves and use the term at more pivotal moments, I believe it would have more impact. Right now, they turn me off. A part of it is that they went the opposite way I felt they should have with the core four, Anita should be our favorite character, and I am sorry she is at the bottom of my list. Why do I care more for Nicole, the daughter who has everything, over Dani, the underdog? Like I said, it's an odd setup that I am getting used to.  I look forward to the in-laws interacting more and bonding away from the Duprees. I already root for Bill and Bradley, I see myself warming up to New Ted soon.
