Y&R: March Discussion Thread

Maura as Grace would have been interesting even if Grace has less staying power than Diane. I'm sure Sharon and Phyllis would have the same reactions, more so with Sharon.

Actually, at least they did use Doris to tell Sharon what we all have been thinking. Sorta like wheeling out Gina to blast Kevin only to be shut down by Colleen of all people.

This is what's wrong with the behind-the-scenes management at Y&R (GH has the same problem). Placating the star to give them what THEY want over and above the wishes of, say, the HW and even the audience. Josh wants to hang with his buddy Michelle and that's that. Nevermind the intense Phick/Shick fatigue the audience are feeling (outside of a few rabid Stafford fans, and even some of them want "their girl" away from Nick because he was bringing her down).

Honestly, MAB needs to pull a Jill Farren Phelps, print off some "focus group" survey responses and tell Josh that he can go ahead with this damn GIFT of a SL for his character. Or he can go to Crimson Lights and serve coffee to the dayplayers. Because if he doesn't want to play on the frontburner with Maura West and Eric Braeden, the show can pass on his SL to Christian LeBlanc or MAB fave Michael Muhney. M'kay?

I'm not so sure that Joshua Morrow doesn't do well in focus groups, and additionally, I don't think CBS puts as much stock into them as ABC (who only cares about focus groups when they fit their agenda and will pick scenes/tapes, etc. that they feel will yeild the results that they want from the group participants anyway).

Oh, I know that -- which is why I put "focus groups" in inverted commas. I'm just saying, to back up their argument (if they ever wished to make it), they could point to any number of credited or uncredited sources as proof that Phick/Shick need a rest ("we're getting all these emails..."). At the end of the day, Morrow is pretty much a company man so the likelihood is that he would toe the line. He doesn't rush to the soap press every time he gets a story he doesn't like. He's got a family and a nice lifestyle. As he once said "they pay me to take my shirt off."

Unfortunately, MAB is even more clueless about puvblic opinion. OMG, she is having super-fun with this HWing lark! Girl thinks she shits flowers and rainbows and that "the fans" just love it.

The show dumped that as soon as they brought her back a few years ago. The current Abby is such a bimbo anyway she is lucky to remember her own name.

Have they addressed Abby's conception? Does she know how she came to be (via test tube of sperm stolen by her momma from the Great Goat)?

"Staying power" is all relative to Maria's agendas.

Exactly. I'm not saying these actors cannot voice their concerns about the writing for their character. Civilly, courteously and with an open mind. But in this case, maybe JM needs to STFU, sit his a$$ down and count his blessings.

If TPTB were in any way COMPETENT management, they would have called him in to a meeting after his interview went to press. They would have reiterated that they value his contribution to Y&R -- and then pointed out that his pairings with 1. Sharon and 2. Phyllis are, for now, irredeemably ruined. Nobody wants to see him with them. It's not JM's fault as much as it is the writing, but his character needs something new to do and somebody new to play with. What better person than a gorgeous, infinitely talented, multiple Emmy-winning actress playing a character with many ties to the canvas? And who is actually winning over fans who were initially skeptical about having MW take over the role of Diane?

This is a SAVE -- not a HARDSHIP -- for Nick. It's a win-win for the actor, too. Three months ago, I couldn't even stomach seeing his face on my screen. Nick's interactions with Sharin' and Syphyllis literally stunk to high heaven. The mere presence of Diane bonding with their children and an actually sweet, tender, light-hearted flirtation building between the two has done wonders. Think what another three months could do.

I liked Diane and Nick' story I thought Maura's Diane brought Josh's Nick acting up a notch or two. I didn't like Victor being inserted so quickly..I wanted a bit more of that interaction to play out.

Since Abby's been aged up I can't recall a scene of her addressing her conception...she does say things like I'm an outsider re: being one of Victor's children...

Vizion re Focus Groups:

Rauch said flat out in an interview Y/R doesn't use them for various reasons one that I recall is by the time changes can be implemented its too late and a waste of time. I have the interview somewhere on our website...I'll look it up can't remember if it was TV Guide or Michael Fairman (DayTime Confidential?) interview..
