I'm not a typical poster in this topic. I came upon this quote. Since we don't have a topic, Things Bill Bell Said, this seems like the best place to post it. Hope it fits.

Russell, M. (1995). Days of Our Lives: A Complete History of the Long-Running Soap Opera. McFarland and Company, Publishers, Ltd. ISBN 0-7864-0112-5

File this under "Very Interesting Things That Bill Bell Said"

"What we must all understand is that the truly powerful and richly identifiable stories involving the family are essentially very simple in their structure and substance. The key to the telling of this kind of story is in digging deep into the mind, body, heart and soul of various members of a given family; in how they act and react to a given situation. In other words, it's the pulling apart of people and the putting them back together again. Life for all of us begins with the family. Life for all of us, if we're blessed and fortunate, ends with the family. But between birth and death are an infinite number of experiences and conflicts that can come from within or outside of the family--but still affect each member of that family. Affects them in terms of love or jealousy, fear or sadness, disgust or grief, anger or joy, hate--but above all--hope! We must again reach our audiences emotionally! We must portray the human equation in storytelling."

It really is a shame that they didn't give Tom Selleck a contract.  Of course, if they had, there might not have been a "Magnum, P.I.," lol.

I remember a Bill Bell interview where he said that he regretted not signing Tom Selleck to a contract.

Tom Selleck Y&R run was 1974 to 1975. Magnum, P.I. started in 1980. Somehow I can't picture Tom Selleck on Y&R past a standard three year initial contract.

I love SCTV but hadn't seen this before. It's a cute, very short Y&R parody. (I'm guessing they didn't know anything about the actual relationship between Snapper and Jill)
