I think Brenda epperson was a great recast, I loved her version of Ashley, more gentle and warm..

I'm not crazy about Nikki marrying victor so soon after josh's death. I mean.. didn't she care for the man at all?

I didn't have a problem with it because to me that's just Nikki.

I liked Brenda a lot, even if it did feel like they lost interest in her once she and Victor split up. I know she didn't have the edge Eileen's Ashley had, but that was probably fading by the time Eileen left anyway.

Brenda had really great chemistry with so many cast members.. don diamond, Beth mainland, Eric Braden, heather tom, jerry Douglas and Peter, jess Walton.

I loved her version of Ashley. softer. more gentle. and very likable.

It seemed Bill Bell was starting to lose interest in the Abbotts around 1987, first with Traci role being reduced then the Ashley and Jack recasts which threw off the balance of the family.

BE Ashley feels like a totally different character compared to ED original recipe Ashley. I might be way off about this, but with Traci role being reduced, BE Ashley seemed like she was both Abbott daughters as one character.

I found a blog with the answer. This apparently was true!

Damn! Tough One! I remember the name being mentioned multiple times but I really don't remember the plot line!

True! And somehow when Traci Visited in 1993, She was The Bitchy One!

You are all right she wasn't Great, But She Certainly had her moments! This scene is pretty impressive if you consider it was quite early in her Run!

As For Dina, Bill Bell certainly had A Love/Hate relationship with that character! It's funny how she was so human in the 1980's with some villainous touches but still sympathetic! Then she was reintroduced in 1991-92 as A Huge B*tch! Then they tried to make her a mature heroine in 1996...

It's just strangely inconsistent!

Thanks for the 87 episode @YRfan23

The seldom seen Newman dining room. Wonder why they decided to use it?- as often they would be just having a coffee/juice in the living room post breakfast. Maybe so Nikki could have her fall down the stairs w/o being seen.

A 4 and a half minute opening scene-no way would that happen today.

Nice to see Casey-a pity she didn't stay around as a recurring doctor/talk to.

And John and Carol turning up at the very en, always nice to be surprised.

I always wondered how Nikki would have these elaborate hair do's day to day. Did she have a hairdresser squirreled away upstairs?

That scene of Nikki on the ground saying she has too much to do reminds me of the scene with Vanessa on the floor in front of her couch and willing herself to get off the ground. If only Vanessa had waited a little longer, she too might have had a miracle cure.

I never understood (at the time) what was going on with Traci Abbott in 1987.  First she announced she would finish her college degree in California, then she left that summer, and was removed from contract.  It seemed as though Bell was done with her.  By the fall, she was back on the show (and under contract again).

I never knew if Bell removed Traci from Genoa City in order to facilitate a Brad/Lauren hook-up, or if he just got tired of Traci because he was tired of her, and then changed his mind a few months later.

I have no memory of Traci first book being about her and Ashley.

I didn't like how Bill Bell wrote BE Ashley and Traci as romantic rivals. During ED original run he kept Ashley and Traci in separate orbits as far as their romances and romantic rivalries went (Ashley/Victor/Nikki, Traci/Danny/Lauren, Traci/Brad/Lauren) and Ashley looked out for Traci and was protective of her. I also think Bill Bell realized that Don Diamont was no match acting-wise for ED so that's why he had Brad original storyline pursue Traci and not Ashley.

    • Aww, yeah it's very heartbreaking and I mostly enjoyed the Nola/Vanessa scenes because they finally let their walls down and came together in a beautiful moment. So Nola was at the hospital already and bumped into Vanessa, who had MRI papers that fell out of her hand and Nola went down to pick them up and asked her what was going on. Later, Vanessa confided in her about her disease. Then, Nola told Zachary on the beach (he prodded her and already alluded to knowing something was going on with Van), and then Vanessa found out she told him and got a little upset. Now, however, Nola is strangely absent while everyone is mourning her death. I'm curious if Nola will actually tell people about her MRI results. I would assume so. Only Nola, Rick, Roger and Zachary know anything, although there is the MRI results letter from the mail that everyone has missed seeing at home. I'm sure it'll all come out at some point. But... I just saw the next episode and the opening already cut Vanessa out and added Dahlia and Zachary. I guess Maeve is gone for a long time

That will break my heart seeing the town continue to mourn her and assume she's dead. I can't wait to see her return though, and I have to imagine feelings will be torn between loving that she's alive and being very angry she did all of this. While I hate what Vanessa is doing, I'm happy to hear it's not totally against her character. I think you're right, had Henry still been around, she wouldn't put him through this. I'm still surprised she is with Bill, though. I get her feelings on Matt, because she wants him to move on, but still very heartbreaking. I'm glad this was Maeve's choice to have a break vs. being fired.
    • Yes.  I remember them together during the early summer of 1986.  They didn't share scenes again for 30 years until 2017 because Carrie wasn't on the show when Anna returned during Sydney's kidnapping.
    • I can see Kim being that way. Well, Kyle didn't have to say yes. LOL. The suicide attempt feels plot-driven. I don't know if even Long could've made it work. She'd spent so much time trying to make Reva and Kyle into a couple, it feels odd to just have them give up. Not to mention how odd it is to have Maeve agree to marry him. Re Charita---surely they could've at least tried  finding clips with who was still there. Maybe they wouldn't have been "big" moments, but surely she'd interacted with Ross, Vanessa, and Henry. Vanessa had dated Ed, FCOL. But Mo and Rick were there---surely they could've bothered to find some clips of her with them (and they did interact a fair amount) and used them. And with Ed they could've found some shot of her talking to him and just not cut to whoever was playing Ed in the clip. That to me is what feels lazy---they had more than a year to figure it out, and they went with a bunch of photos. If you were sort of centering it on Rick anyway---then find clips with them and use 'em.
    • I definitely think it's time to write off Nina for good. I think her killing Drew might actually be a good idea. She could completely lose it after losing both Sasha and Willow and she ends up murdering Drew and eventually she gets caught and sent away to prison for a long time.
    • I hope it's okay to post this here(as in from DC)
    • Quick question - did Christie and Leann share any scenes together in the '80s before Leann left the show?
    • This is the perfect way to encapsulate the situation. So many morally-reprehensible stories were foisted on the show and its characters in ATWT's dwindling years. Rape should never be used as a cheap plot device or in a way that degrades the victim. Jack's sexual assault was another heinous example of how nasty the the show's tone had become. The fact that people like Hogan Sheffer, Ron Carlivati, Jean Passanante, Charles Pratt, Dena Higley, etc., somehow end up winning awards for their material, decimates the credibility and integrity of the awards, IMHO. Soaps used to have a solid moral core and did not originally wallow in the gutter, rolling around in filth and depravity just to be cool, hip, campy, or whatever else modern-day PTB aim for. Thank you. Cruelty, degradation and misogyny are not components which lend themselves to successful soaps, which have always been predicated on warmth, family bonds, and providing a comforting haven for their audience. The genre has been crippled because the cynical and ignorant executives in charge understand neither the shows nor what the audience wants to see.
    • Beverlee was on a whole other level from Kim. It's not like they were in competition with each other. I get the feeling that Kim had a slight problem with the super-professional, serious cast members who just wanted everyone to be prepared and do the work, as she seems to like having fun on set. (She's made a few cracks about Chris Bernau being like that). Bev was definitely one of those. But they didn't work together that much. Yeah, they made her manic and also much weaker. She always had a vulnerability, but wanting to kill herself over that guy? No way. Not only that, he didn't leave her! She insisted he marry Maeve. When they did the tribute to Bert/Charita, the compilation of scenes with her showed how much the cast had been almost totally turned over in a relatively short period of time. Nearly every shot was of her by herself because most people she had worked with had been fired, left or been replaced. I assume they couldn't show her with people who hadn't been replaced, like Don Stewart, Elvera Roussel, or Robert Newman because they would have had to pay them for using their clips. It's dreadful to watch. Like she had no connection to the current show.
