I used to watch DOOL on and off, and have become re-hooked!

I was hoping someone could catch me up on the Shelle/Phelle storyline, I remember when Bell and Shawn kidnapped Claire from Phillip at the hospital and ran off, but what happened after that ...

Also with Phillip what child did he give up for adoption with the whole Kayla/Patch story, I am very confused.

wow,,,that was a sort of dark time for DOOL. They ran off to Canada in some sort of underground railroad type group and they needed to get as far away as possible because Philip was in hot pursuit. They got on a cruise and wound up on an island run by this old cranky coot and I think it was his asian daughter. She took an immediate liking to Shawn of course. Anyway, I am trying to remember this, Philip wound up on the island also and I think danger forced them all to make peace.

The baby...maybe I have the wrong baby but here goes nothing...

Mimi and Philip wound up somehow with a surrogate having their child, but Bonnie paid her to keep the child a secret. The woman came back to blackmail Bonnie I believe and somehow the child wound up on the black market, where Kayla and Steve took him in and named him "Pocket". I forget how that played itself out. This was all not a great time for DOOL but if you are interested there is a Youtuber who is dutifully uploading every episode of Days and is up to mid-2006 and soon the arrival of Brandon Beemer. So eventually this all has to start up.

The baby wound up sick or something. Patch/Kayla & Philip agreed to let Tyler be adopted into a loving home.

And I might be wrong but the danger on the island was Steve programmed to kill or something.

The actual Shawn & Belle on the run started off as a great storyline. It was as soon as they landed on that damn Tinder Lau that the storyline failed. After Tinder Lau they kind of put Shawn/Belle/Phil on the backburner before the whole Belle & Philip affair storyline got under way which was HOT! Hope then discovered the affair then Chloe who had just returned to town. Chloe exposed Philip & Belle's affair at the 5 year high school reunion. Belle & Shawn got over there problems and married before leaving Salem. It's a shame because the Philip/Chloe/Belle/Shawn quad was probably the best storyline at the end of Hogan's run. Philip & Belle had lots of chemistry as did Chloe & Shawn. It also looked like Hogan planned to make Chloe into a quite the bitchy woman.

The best thing I remember about the whole period was the episode when Kate figured out Philip was back and she went looking for him. It was so gothic, something out of a old horror movie. The island story was dreadful. That old guy was so tiresome with his grouchiness. Yeah, it was Steve I think...eventually half the cast wound up on the island! This had to be the period when DOOL was forced to let everyone go, and the show tried to fake it by spending an entire summer with a story starring Sami, EJ..and Celeste of all people. There was just nobody on the show. Well, that blond Horton guy who wasn't very nice. Jeremy? I don't think I could watch that airline story again even for money. 2007 was a very bad time for Days. 2006 ended with a bang though with this great episode with John/EJ, Patrick/Hope, and Sami/Lucas and a collapsed roof.

That one episode was like a season finale of Dynasty. Just as EJ is shooting John dead, a roof collapses on Lucas. Meanwhile Hope is in the middle of a hostage drama with her captor Patrick and the police ready to blaze there way in, and just then as Patrick is flipping out threatening to kill her, Hope goes into labor.   Greatest use of cliffhangers ever. Every soap should be like this every week.

I *so* don't remember any of that! And I thought I watched nearly every day! I guess it was just ho-hum and forgettable. All I remember is that at one point there was a 5-year reunion (and everyone was just so gosh-darned successful already at the tender age of 23. Ridiculous.)

    • Totally agree. AL isn’t suited to Summer written this way (which is, truthfully, in character). HK wasn’t credible in the boss-bitch moments, which AL plays more easily.

I’m glad Tripp is back in Salem and I like that he’s planning on being more assertive. He doesn’t deserve to get hurt again. Though I wouldn’t be surprised if some people in the Soap Universe are gonna be mad about his lines today Hopefully, we get some scenes of Johnny/Tripp and Wendy/Chanel. There haven’t been that many lately and this storyline definitely needs them. I think weaving Talia into it would be a good idea as well. She needs a new man now that the Colin storyline is over.  Rafe is still dumb. There really are no security cameras at that hospital that could have shown that Colin didn’t take Abe?? Speaking of Abe, his storyline is total ff material. James Reynolds deserves so much better than this.
    • I've been rewatching early SATC (am mid-season 2), and am enjoying the mid-90s indie film vibe of the show at that time. It was a bit tougher and grittier but it also showed some of the growing wealth of the city at that time. SATC was always about pecking order and jostling for a better position, but on the romantic frontlines. I also enjoyed the Bad Dating SLs LOL. I understand why it went the fairytale-ish route. Part of this mirrored the evolution of the city itself, as Manhattan became more moneyed and, dare I say, unaffordable. It was a glamorous city that many aspired to live in and conquer against the odds. Part of it was also, as the show progressed, our own growing investment in the main cast and their SLs. Hence less standalone episodes and more a continuing soapy story of romantic relationships. IMO, this was a fairly organic evolution.
    • Lanier is fine but I miss Hunter King as well. A lot of the material AL is struggling with currently HK would’ve had an easier time playing, she could knock out those bratty whiny freakout moments with little effort. AL’s Summer should be written as icier and more indignant.
