Bernard reminds me of Easton - huge fanbase that does not translate into ratings. GH needs a complete overhaul starting with the mob. I've always wondered if they killed Sonny, return Jason to a Q, re-establish the Quatermaines, Spencers and Wards and connect characters who are interesting but otherwise don't get a lick of airtime because of the usual airhogs if old viewers will return. The sad thing is that will never happen so all three ABC shows will continue to be interchangeable at the bottom.

I think Burton is the biggest problem on GH. Benard at least helped get ratings up when Sonny shot Dante. The writing is what stinks the most for Sonny, and drags his character down. Jason is just a black hole. You can do nothing with him, and Burton barely makes an effort. He also won't ever let them go back to making Jason a Quartermaine, I'm guessing, and there's no point in that now anyway because all of the drama died when AJ and Alan did.

I think they should kill Jason off and spin stories out of that.

None of the ABC Soaps are going anywhere anytime soon due to ABC owning them. AMC and OLTL are pretty safe due to the fact that they've been kept under-budget especially OLTL which is the cheapest soap on air right now. DAYS is a wait and see game because of Comcast. B&B is the next inline if any soap gets canceled because CBS doesn't own it and its numbers headed to ATWT territory but the difference is that its a Bell soap so its fate will likely keep it on the air somewhere. The soap still does large numbers overseas so the show is making money BUT CBS isn't seeing too much of that money which is the problem. Y&R will be next unless Comcast throws away DAYS.

Somebody mentioned something interesting last week that Y&R might be the answer to either NBC or ABC's problems. Y&R could easily move to a more dedicated soap network when the contract runs out, that will lift those ratings back up and keep them from seeing low 1s like their going to see without it.

AMC is actually more cheaper now than it was last year since they moved to LA and their saving a lot of money on their studio space. GH is the only soap that's hugely over-budgeted at the moment, eventually GH will be going under budget with these kind of ratings. That is funny though AMC's clothes are becoming cheaper. LOL!

Last place doesn't mean anything anymore there's only six of them left anyways, its all about making money from the advertisers and staying over the red. GL and ATWT weren't owned by CBS like AMC is with ABC so CBS really didn't see much profit from GL and ATWT which is the real reason why it was canceled and also the fact that P&G wanted out of the soap business that's not the case with the last six soaps.

I'm so over all the 'Brand' talk when it comes to soaps. Clearly, AMC is no longer a very strong brand. The show still has strong name recognition but, given the current ratings, that recognition may be negitive and therefore not such a good thing. As an outside example, Harry Reid has strong name recog but almost lost an election. As the World Turns was a strong brand...among 70 year olds.

People don't pay nearly enough attention to the 18-34 demo--it is a strong indicator as to future tends and can tell us a lot about what the next 5 years will look like. Both ATWT and GL consistantly came in last in 18-34 and, today, are gone: This was a really big hint that these shows had become diminished brands, of little relevance, and in need of serious repair. I would argue that OLTL has become a slightly stronger brand, especially among younger viewers, than AMC and ratings back this up week after week. So much work goes into building and maintaining a brand and this is why companies like Tide and McDonalds spend so much on advets and new varieties of product. Television is no different than these other consumer goods and, just because AMC was a powerhouse in the 1990's, doesn't mean anything in the 2010 market. Today's AMC has become dull, lackluster and day by day looses recognition. I would compare AMC to an old Aunt who in her 70's was vital and energetic but today is little more than a crippled empty shell. GL died years before cancellation and the same is also true of All My Children. Pratt, with his many faults, was the shows best hope but it will be down hill from here.

The whole reason Frons put JHC at AMC was because he was so impressed with how she was able to produce Port Charles on its tiny budget. I'm sorry but the whole "Julie Carruthers cannot even balance her own checkbook" thing is ridiculous. Is AMC over-budget? Apparently so. But I don't but that the woman whose efficiency Wendy Riche devoted an entire Emmy win speech to whose ability to produce Port Charles on peanuts impressed Frons now apparently can't even add.

At a certain point it becomes practically impossible to stay on budget and I think Frons has slashed AMC to that point. Meanwhile every time I check out GH every couple of months it seems to have all new sets!

For me, Jason is a much more viable character than Sonny. Maybe I'm biased since I fondly remember him and Keesha together but Jason Morgan is the staple of everything wrong with GH. I can't give credit to Bernard for that arc because it was so heavily pimped anything but a rating increase would have been a failure. I think once Burton gets material he delivers but he has absolutely nothing to work with. He and Easton have the easiest jobs in the world - blank stares with limited dialogue. But you do have a point, with half the Q's already dead it seems pointless unless they make the last three years someone's dream ala Dallas. *snickers*

PGP wanted to suck every last drop of profit out of GL/ATWT or, otherwise, these shows would have been sold off to CBS in 2001. Also, America is very different nation, more radical in the extremes, and controversial topics have become off limits for a soap company since 'The Culture Wars'. I really do think the suits at P&G were afraid of product boycotts--'Boycott Procter and Gamble' is still the second most popular search when entering the word boycott into Google Search. PGP did very basic (bad) stories for the final four years and probably used various math formulas to see how long they could bring in revenue via GL and ATWT without making any real sort of splash. The position of the PGP shows was unigue and about the only lession that can be learned from their cancellations may be that an over-focus on history harms demos. GH is in trouble but, by removing huge amounts of history and starting fresh with younger characters, the soap still rocks in demos.

    • I’m up to August 5, 1996. Another change to the opening music. The hollow whooshing sound is gone and they’ve add a soft rock, synthesizer-style sound to this more upbeat version. Ugh - they let Gilly and Griffin kiss before she found out the truth. So gross, what’s the point? And now once the truth has come out, Charles is like “oh yeah, I’ve always known he was your father, no big deal”?  What was all of this for? If he really always knew, he should have had a reaction when Griffin came to town last year, just like Vivian did.  I will say, the acting in the reveal scene was amazing, both actresses killed it. Now Vivian lost her husband, who is leaving her, and her daughter… and she already lost her son. The writers really trashed this entire family for nothing, how sad. She’s now running around town blaming everything on Griffin and trashing his name, but lady, no, it’s all your fault! I think I now just got to Gilly’s last episode (Aug 1). She just announced to the family at dinner that she’s leaving town for good and will not reach back out to her mother. What a terrible ending to this character and the family. Finally found a time I liked Alan. Marah (of course) and Shayne sneak away and go wandering on 5th street alone, but Shayne stays back in the abandoned building, just as they’re about to blow it up. Alan is sweet to Marah and realizes Shayne might still be there, so he runs to the building and tries to stop them from detonating the explosives, but he’s too late… he finally has a heart here haha. Although I guess this is still all his fault.  Watching Josh and Reva react to Shayne’s voice from within the rubble was really moving, great acting across the board here (Annie too). Ok, so Zachary shows up while everyone runs away from the rubble that’s falling, and he steps into it and finds Shayne. So is he like an angel or something supernatural? Because I don’t love supernatural stuff on my soaps unless that’s ‘normal’ for the show.  But Alan does eventually go in with Josh, so he’s risking his life to save Shayne, and that’s great. I was a huge Lucy/A-M fan and loved watching their relationship, but most couples work well when the actors have good chemistry. For me, now that Rick Hearst is gone, the relationship just isn’t working for me, sadly. I feel like Lucy and Zachary have better chemistry now haha. Abby’s mom has returned and she’s just highly frustrating and awful - that’s all. J just mentioned he has a sister - who is that? Unless she’s older and an adult, it’s a bit odd that she’s not around since now both Nola and Quint are in Springfield. She didn’t show at Henry’s funeral either, nor was mentioned. So Roger is now in the loony bin, after losing his court case. I’m side-eyeing Blake on this one. She was completely torn, which was nice to see, but she ultimately sided with Dinah/Hart which annoyed me. But, Bridget continues to win for me - she’s one of my favorites - and she just called out Dinah/Hart on their BS, and I’m here for it. If there were ever a moment for a slap, Dinah deserves one from Bridget. Speaking of slaps, I haven’t seen a single slap in the 18 months I’ve been watching this show!  Does GL just not traditionally do slaps? It’s a soap staple that I enjoy haha. Alex continues to be one of my favorites, likely because I’m such a fan of Dusay, her theatrics and heavy breathing. She keeps referring to Amanda as “Little Miss Madame” and it cracks me up.  Speaking of Amanda, she now just overheard nurses gossiping that Blake is having twins with two different fathers, so she knows the secret! This should get good now that she’s re-entered Ross/Blake’s orbit. Ah, so the A.Spaulding in question that paid Neil Everest off to frame Phillip was Alan-Michael!  Well, Lucy found a check he wrote to Neil, so I’m assuming so… this isn’t that interesting of a storyline though, so hopefully this doesn’t drag on too much longer. Now I just found out that Neil and Alan were cellmates in prison…it keeps going. And finally, Annie just faked a prescription for more pills and she just saw a ‘bad Annie’ image of herself who is encouraging her addiction.  Annie is officially talking to herself and since I know Jeva won’t allow a Josh/Annie relationship to survive, I’m all here for crazy Annie! Whoa! Griffin just got shot while giving a speech on 5th Street.  Curious to see what happens here, even though I’m not a Griffin fan.

    • I definitely think FV wanted to pair Kristina and Lucky.  Why else would Lucky decide to become a bartender at her stupid bar?  Lucky was a cop, a crusader?-whatever he was doing in Africa and all these years away.   It makes zero sense for him to just be content tending bar for some flakey girl he knew since she was born.  Have him work with Spinelli at PI firm or something.  There were also some scenes with Kristina and Lucky that seemed like the show was leaning in that direction.  I also suspect JJ was extremely unhappy with that idea lol. As far as Lulu, I certainly don't miss the JMB smug era.  I hate that BLQ looks like a poor, innocent victim being tortured by Lulu at every turn though.
    • I do think she's been pretty wrecked, having tried to kill someone in cold blood, letting her whole family (including the woman pregnant with her great-grandchild) get charged or questioned, and having no remorse, but it doesn't matter as much because Kathy has not existed as a character since Gillian's return anyway.  There are reasons to bring Max back, like Lauren and his not knowing he had a child with Linda, but he is exhausted, with Jake Wood phoning it in years before he left.  I am a little surprised about Zoe because Michelle Ryan said for years she didn't want to return, to the point of even asking the show to recast the role, but I guess this may only be a short stint. I wouldn't be shocked if they kill Zoe off.

    • Completely agree with you. I think Bonita Brisker has been really good as Sharon. What Anita did was obviously awful, so she doesn't need to reign anything in. We're getting a good look at someone who's struggled in life compared to Anita "We're the Duprees!" Williams.   -- Anita is starting to look foolish for dredging all this up just so she  can get her ass back on stage. Is she so delusional she doesn't realize how she hurt Sharon and Tracy? -- Anita's line to Vernon "How can I expect Sharon to forgive me when I haven't forgiven myself" struck me as really selfish. After all that with Sharon, Anita again made it all about herself. -- Does anyone really believe Anita wants equal billing if the Articulettes reunite?  -- Colby Muhammad continues to be a standout. Her Kat more than holds her own with Leslie. -- The writing was very good for the father/daughter scene between Ted and Eva. It wasn't so good between Ted and Martin in their father/son scene. It didn't play like family to me, especially when Ted referred to "my wife" when talking about Nicole to Martin. -- Overall, a very solid show today.
    • I honestly do not see the point of Max coming back again. Zoe does not surprise me. I've been waiting for that since Bionic Woman flopped in the US, frankly. I'm not against it vs. some other pointless returns. Some returns work and some don't, some are just there. Like, am I grateful that Kathy is alive? Yes, absolutely. Do I love any of her stories? No. But she's not utterly destroyed, she's just there.
    • I think Frank probably wanted to try for Jonathan with Kate Mansi. I actually can't knock the idea of a Lucky/Kristina affair or flirtation on paper, as a romantic obstacle to LNL2, but not with the characters in the places they are at present or have been over the last few years. It would be a mistake to do right now and would poison the well. I think Jonathan probably made it clear when he came back that he wanted what had been promised to him years ago with Elizabeth, and between his not being one of FV's preferred focal leads and Liz being a grudging afterthought if she's not with one of his OLTL stars, I suspect FV was content to leave them where they are vs. where they should be, which is central on the show. It's like I said a few days ago: A lot of this is how Lulu has always been. But back in the day the issue was that Lulu (and Carly) were deified for it, whereas now it's that Lulu is just used as the heavy because FV has a preexisting favoritism for Setton/BLQ. And that's a waste of a key character and talent, namely Alexa Havins.
