So true...all of the above...Marland, like Long and everyone else had their strength and their weaknesses...talk about chemistyless couples..Andy and Courtney, who looked like a 40 year old but was supposed to be a hot early 20 model..Iva and John..(the only other character who had less chemistry with him was Mama Snyder..).and while they have their fans...Dolan and Holmes always made Tom and Margo..dour and dull, not the fun they were before. Watching old clips when Iva first came on she was more interesting...fiesty and damaged and she and Mama Snyder (who I must admit I disliked) had a bit of a more contentious relationship..so this whole "I realized Mama loved me as much as her bio kids" seems like a rewrite of their relationship. I liked Iva the gubby fighter who felt an outsider in her family more then the sad sack dope she became.

Thought I love his names...Gavin Krueger (who I must have been the only one on earth who say him as sexy... ) and Phillipe VanDoren!!

Courtney was forgettable. She was very annoying. The only time I found her interesting was when plaster was falling on her face thanks to Hans.

Hayley Barr was better on GL.

Courtney didn't bother me like I know that she bothered others but there were episodes that I missed out on watching the first go 'round.

The fact that she didn't really have a family rooted on the show didn't help to cement her character to the canvas either. She was Sean's younger sister and Sean himself wasn't truly anchored as a character himself. He was kind of dating nuFrannie, which just wasn't enough of an anchor for the character. Then the character of Sean got a recast. That Baxter connection was kind of unmoored.

If you compare Sean to Kirk Anderson, you will see the difference between an anchored character from an un-anchored character. Right away, Kirk became integrated with Lucinda Walsh and Iva Snyder and the Snyder family, who had been on the show for several years by then, same actors, no recasts.

Oh wow...how did he get Patricia??

I know he said on Facebook he had great guests coming up.

I hated Sean. He was dull as dirt and Burke Moses sucked in the roll. Glad they got her real husband to play Sean but he didn't have much of a story.

I came to love Andy and Courtney as a couple - especially when each matured and had a more adult grasp of their personal issues. I loved their growth and was definitely rooting for them. Their Christmas 1992 wedding made me very happy.

Doug Marland died a few months afterwards and I think his portrayal of marriage between two young people would have been handled better then it ultimately was.

    • This is (maybe) overly simplistic and nonsoapy, but Doug needs to go to Gamblers Anonymous, to deal with the addictive neurological excitement hits that gambling gives him - and which control his life. Vanessa needs to go to therapy to find ways to remain healthfully lusty and sex-positive, but to stay away from anyone who would demean her.
    • YT keeps commending GL clips to me. I discovered Kathleen Cullen was on in Christmas 1987. Was there any talk of making it permanent  or was this just a special visit? I wish they had made the visit permanent. I liked her chemistry with Grant Aleksander.
    • I'm not sure it's as unpopular as you think.  I just think the show knew they were in a bind, and needed a proven couple for the viewers to invest in. Trying to reunite Vanessa and Ross had just failed in 87. I don't think Ed and Holly's affair was well received, as Simon and Garrett had a brother/sister chemistry. Enter Billy and Vanessa, who give you history and an out not to try and do a Josh/Reva/Billy triangle, which would've really wrecked the relationship between Josh and Billy. I'd have been ok with trying Vanessa/Ross again, and doing a Vanessa/Ross/Holly/Billy quad for a while. I hated Nadine. HATED. She had to be the most insufferable also-ran before ATWT's Julia Lindsay. This is where I wish I knew Roger's history better.

    • GROSS. Michael Swan was hot back in his ATWT days. Now he's 76 and WAY past his hot years.
    • Since she kidnapped, locked up and tried to kill her father's wife I'd say that is still a pretty big deal
    • I'm good with the gushing, too. There aren't many soap icons like John Black, and that's important to celebrate and remember. And yes, life does go on for other characters, but as they say, timing is everything. Going sky diving the day before the funeral? And during a week of shows that were so powerful emotionally? No.
    • No. There might have been a slight pause for dramatic effect after his "death," but pretty soon after they showed him in France getting plastic surgery and getting involved with his doctor, then planning with her to bring Christina to France. (She thought he had good reason to do it; she wasn't a bad person or anything). Now that I think of it, there must have been some kind of pause before that, during the 70s. Rita was accused of killing a private patient for an inheritance when she lived in Texas. Part of the backstory was that Roger had been there, too. Not sure exactly when or how long that was.
    • I've already stated that I don't like Doug being written as this meek and submissive. It was so lame watching him leave her like that. Vanessa can divorce him, but she then needs to get her thot ass into therapy. She's not only having sex with every guy she runs into, but is now having  sex with a skeevy perv on a poker table. I'm going to give the BTG some credit here. For months, many on this board were delighting in the Vanessa/Joey flirting and what they saw as chemistry. I think we're now seeing what the writers always intended -- that Joey is a disgusting POS wannabe mobster.
