The Oprah Winfrey Show

I genuinely can't stand Oprah and I totally agree. She flat out asked them what it was like being in direct competition with her and I thought it was really tacky. She looked really smug and full of herself. Montel proceeded to stroke her ego about tracking guests in the parking lot or such nonsense to get the jump on her and she looked like a fat Chesire cat who swallowed the canary. Ricki was the only one who kept it real by saying they had two completely different audiences so she knew her guests would never be on her show. Any more ass kissing from Donahue and his mouth would have been firmly planted on her ass.

As Oprah stated, this is the first time all of them were in the same room together and she had the opportunity to really showcase the diversity of their respective shows and how they all contributed to daytime but it was one freaking Oprah gush fest. Who knew Ricki kept telling herself she was Oprah, wondered what Oprah would say or do; wondered what type of questions Oprah would ask with her own show. Oprah's "awwwwwwww" was pathetic.

The omission of Jenny Jones was glaring - maybe she declined.

I read somewhere that possibly Jenny was asked, but she really didn't want to talk about the whole murder thing, and so she declined. Honestly, I don't think they even asked her simply because of time constraints and the fact that Jenny and Ricki had similar shows.

As much as I love the trashy side of talk shows, and I do indeed love that sh!t, I wish someone would come out with a heavy social issue-driven show again.

Oh boy, yeah, so they did this show on secret crushes and this guy was brought on only to discover that his secret crush... was a dude. The guy was so humiliated that when they got back home, he murdered the poor man who was crushing on him. :(

I am really excited for Monday's show, a The Color Purple reunion (I am positive I'm going to choke up, that movie is colored peoples Citizen Kane). But ALSO... Oprah and WHOOPI! one-on-one! There have been rumors of a feud for at least a decade now. They are going to adrress that, and in the promo, Oprah was even in tears about it. :o CAN. HARDLY. WAIT.

As for today's show, wow, how sad. First of all, Marie Osmond looks GREAT. She had some pretty severe-looking work done on her face a while back, but it has settled in and she really looks hotter than she ever has. But oy, Oprah was really circling the airport with the gay question re: her son, it was like, "Oy Oprah, either address the elephant or stop feeding it!" They finally came out (no pun intended) and spoke about it. I thought it was pretty low of Roseanne and company to go off ranting about the kid being gay the day after he'd died. If he was he was (Marie says he wasn't, and I'm sure some will still believe he was just because he was sensitive, loved his mother fiercely, and wanted to go into fashion), but his death wasn't every loud mouth's moment to opine on Latter Day Saints and real or imagined homophobia in his life. his sister is gay as Marie pointed out. That poor kid. I hope he's at peace on the other side. :(

Uhhh, I wanna say three or four years before she was cancelled? Anyone else remember?

It happened in spring or summer 1995. It was a huge story at the time. AMC fans will remember that this helped inspire Michael Delaney gunning Laurel down on The Cutting Edge.

Her show went on for, like SFK said, about 3-4 years after this, but all the buzz was gone.

IIRC, the "Secret Crushes" episode of Jenny never aired because the murder took place like three or four days after the taping. The wikipedia article is pretty accurate, I believe. The victim's family sued the producers, and Jenny had to testify. I saw clips of her on the stands on some ETHS-type show, and she looked so, so sad and affected by the whole thing. I'm shocked she recovered to run the show for another eight years.

I'm watching the Osmond show now, but I'm really looking forward to the TCP reunion! Yes indeed, SFK! Me and my friends were born about 4-5 years after it was released, but we would do the ENTIRE "You tol' Harpo t'beat me?" scene in high school for sh!ts and giggles. Fat Oprah was so much fun.

The shoulders and sleeves are too tight. He'd benefit from a larger size. The yellow arrows show where the shoulder cut should actually be placed in my opinion. I don't mind the granpa fashion per se, I just have an OCD with sizes LOL
    • Today May 11, 2025, Pope Leo briefly addressed the crowd in the square.  He sang the prayer to Mary and then said:   Dear brothers and sisters, The immense tragedy of the Second World War ended eighty years ago, on 8 May, after having claimed sixty million victims. In today’s dramatic scenario of a piecemeal third world war, as Pope Francis stated many times, I too address the world’s leaders, repeating the ever-timely appeal: “Never again war!”. I carry in my heart the sufferings of the beloved Ukrainian people. May everything possible be done to reach an authentic, just and lasting peace, as soon as possible. Let all the prisoners be freed and the children return to their own families. I am deeply saddened by what is happening in the Gaza Strip: may there be an immediate ceasefire! Let humanitarian aid be provided to the stricken civil population, and let all the hostages be freed. On the other hand, I have welcomed with satisfaction the announcement of the ceasefire between India and Pakistan, and I hope that through the upcoming negotiations, a lasting accord may be reached soon. https://www.vatican.va/content/leo-xiv/en/angelus/2025/documents/20250511-regina-caeli.html
    • Lol! I'm quite sure it would.
    • But that is pretty much situation normal for all soaps. They do not tend to continue to show things like surgical scars. They also play fast & loose with hospital procedures.
    • re: prior two posts about Trump's new opulent plane contrasted with utter starvation in Gaza... Trump and Netanyahu are giving "Let them eat cake".  And it's horrific. In 2013, Pope Francis removed a bishop from running the Limburg Germany diocese because he was constructing an opulent 31-million-euro building. This is from Reuters obit of Francis: https://www.reuters.com/world/obituary-pope-francis-shook-up-church-with-simplicity-raising-conservative-ire-2025-04-21/ From the start, Francis sent clear signals to priests and bishops about the type of Church he wanted. He said there was no room for "careerists or social climbers" among the clergy, told cardinals they should not live "like princes," and said the Church should not "dissect theology" in lush salons while there were poor people around the corner. "If investments in banks fall, it is a tragedy and people say 'what are we going to do?' but if people die of hunger, have nothing to eat or suffer from poor health, that's nothing. This is our crisis today. A Church that is poor and for the poor has to fight this mentality," he said early in his papacy. -- Pope Francis stood up for the poor, the unhoused, the migrants of all faiths.  He lived simply and ordered that when he died, that he wished to be interred in a simple wooden coffin. I sincerely hope that the new pope Leo will follow Francis' example.
    • Co Sign!!!!   I have been watching the show regularly over the last few weeks and am pleasantly surprised by how much easier it is to watch each day. This definitely is confirmation for me that Paula and Jeanne wrote the stroke episodes, cause I felt the same way watching those. Could be more exciting for sure, but interactions now make more sense and everything seems to be a bit more character driven which is great. I will add though, there are still about 10 or so characters i'd love to see gone, and hope a few will exit in the future! Otherwise, happy with the changes so far.
    • Sean Freeman looks good in anything. Would not change one thing. Arielle Prepetit looking cute.

    • There is suffering everywhere you look, says mother of emaciated baby girl trapped in Gaza https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/czrv5rl73zdo Quoting excerpts from BBC article: The baby's mother Najwa, 23, is changing Siwar's nappy. She weighs just over 2kg (4lb 6oz). A baby girl of five months should be around or over 6kg. "There was no food when I gave birth to her," says Najwa. "If I wanted to feed myself so I could breastfeed her, I had no nutrients to make my health better... She now only drinks formula milk, and we don't know how we'll be able to provide it for her." Israel has banned international journalists from entering Gaza to report independently. According to Siwar's doctor, Ziad al-Majaida, "Nothing enters through the borders, no milk, food or anything. This leads to big problems here for the kids. This baby needs a specific type of milk. It was available before, but because of the border closure, the stocks have run out for a while now." Since the beginning of the year, according to the UN, about 10,000 cases of acute malnutrition among children have been identified. Food prices have rocketed by as much as 1,400%. Charity kitchens, which have helped hundreds of thousands of Gazans, are shutting as food supplies run out. Twenty-five bakeries supported by the World Food Programme have been forced to close. Israel cut off all humanitarian aid and other supplies from entering Gaza on 2 March, and resumed its military offensive two weeks later The United Nations has said the Israeli blockade constitutes "a cruel collective punishment" on civilians. The UN's humanitarian director, former British diplomat Tom Fletcher, said that international law was unequivocal. "As the occupying power, Israel must allow humanitarian support in... Aid, and the civilian lives it saves, should never be a bargaining chip," he warned. From the BBC reporter: I put this point to Boaz Bismuth, a leading member of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's Likud party. He (Bismuth) denies there is an aid crisis caused by the blockade. "There is food in Gaza... Israel wouldn't do such a restriction if the population didn't have food. I mean, I know my country perfectly well," he (Bismuth) said. BBC reporter: I put it to Bismuth that he was denying the evidence of people's eyes, that children were starving. "There are not starving children. I repeat again." He (Bismuth) said that there had been allegations months ago of famine, ethnic cleansing and genocide in Gaza "which was crap". ----  ----  ---- A UK-based advocacy group for Israel has the nerve to claim war may reduce obesity in Gaza https://www.theguardian.com/world/2025/may/10/uk-lawyers-for-israel-condemned-over-claim-war-may-reduce-obesity-in-gaza
