These are the weekly synopses provided by Jon-Michael Reed, who was the former editor of DAILY TV SERIALS. These appeared in newspapers across the country as part of his "What's Happening" column, along with an accompanying article on a soap star along with related soap news. These will begin with September 1977. June 1976-August 1977 were posted over at the DAYTIME ROYALTY website but no future updates were provided after this time frame. These will focus only on Y&R.

September 1977:

Jody left town to return to her parents. Tom went to college, and they gave up their baby for adoption. Kay panicked when she learned of Jill's plans to move in with Derek. Liz let Derek know that Jill's in love with him and he suggested Jill go on vacation. Laurie apologized to Lance for having doubts about him and Leslie, but Vanessa managed to get Lance and Les alone for an afternoon.

Brad's tumor was benign but there are no positive results yet on his vision. At Lance's urging, Brock dated Leslie who decided to resume a love life without Brad. Ron managed to talk to Karen, but made her promise to keep his return a secret. After learning from Liz that Derek doesn't love Jill and had sent her on vacation, Kay promised to finance his new salon. Everyone prepared for Stu and Jennifer's wedding anniversary.

After their anniversary party, Jennifer died in her sleep in Stu's arms. Brock boosted Leslie's womanly confidence and encouraged her to play a concert date. Stuart convinced Peggy to go to college. Ron shunned his mother, Marion Reeves. Derek informed Kay that he's found the property for his new salon.

Kay tried to get her licks in while Jill vacationed by signing a partnership deal with Derek. Jill returned, decided not to move in with Derek, but informed him she had located his son. Lance and Brock fought about Brock's relationship with Leslie. Cynthia lied to Brad about knowing of Leslie's activities.

Thanks for posting!, 1977 on Y&R, seems like one of those years that no one talks about. Not that im saying it was a bad year, which im sure it wasnt since Bill Bell was writing, but it doesnt seem like anything really interesting happen. Besides the death of Jennifer Brooks, which was probably a big deal at the time.

The Jodie/Tom story was one of those heavy handed 'social issue' storylines where Brock got to sermonize. The two teens had no links to the canvas and were on and off in a few months.

Jodie was played by Cynthia Eilbacher, who later played April. Ron's mother Marion was played by Carolyn Conwell who a few years later was cast as Mary Williams.

October 1977:

Brock nixed Leslie's invite to spend the night until her divorce is final. Ron called Marion a lousy mother, but accepted her money, then snatched Karen away from school for their secret trip which was halted when Karen became ill. Jill realized Kay loves Derek and suspected Kay's motives for sending Jill a picture of the deceased Philip.

Brad's doctor suggested he go home to await results of the eye surgery. Cynthia spotted Leslie and Brock smooching. Ron skipped out when he brought Karen to see a doctor who turned out to be Snapper. Kay stopped Derek from dating Jill, while Liz realized Derek's the secret man in Kay's life.

Snapper saved Ron's life when Ron attempted suicide after realizing he doesn't have a court chance regarding Karen. Kay told Liz she wouldn't give up Derek to Jill. Laurie learned about a tattooed man in Hong Kong whom she suspects is Lucas.

Vanessa announced she'd canceled her plastic surgery and would only agree to have it if Lucas returns. Cynthia rushed to Brad's side when his bandages were removed and rejoiced that his sight has returned. Jill made an effort to comply with Derek's wishes by asking Kay to bury the hatchet. While Laurie checked up on the man she thinks is Lucas, Vanessa suspected Laurie's cheating on Lance. Brock admitted his love to Leslie.

Brock/Leslie and The Maestro/Liz. Two storylines the went nowhere. Bill Bell found it hard to expand what was on the canvas already.

In a way, this was a positive as it kept the show focused- something the soaps lost as they kept bringing on new characters and lost the core premise of the show. But the downside was couplings like those.

Bell admitted he would start a plot, watch it play out and drop it if it wasn't going well.

November 1977:

Ron decided to right the wrongs he's committed and told Chris that she and Snapper can adopt Karen. Cynthia reneged on her promises to Brad's doctor to tell Leslie about Brad when she discovered that Brad and Les's divorce is almost final. The maestro gave Stu competition by showing an interest in Liz. Laurie jetted to Hong Kong and found the unconscious man she thinks is Lucas. Kay offered Joann a job as a weight-loss coach. Jill told Derek that Kay's in love with him.

Laurie met a "John Doe" in Hong Kong who denied being Lucas although he bears the infamous tattoo. Vanessa arranged for Laurie's book to be a bestseller in order to expose Laurie to Lance. Before leaving for Alaska with Marion, Ron apologized to Nancy. Brock grew suspicious of Cynthia's interest in Leslie's life.

Ron decided to stay in town after Nancy was released from the hospital. Lance was surprised when Laurie brought Lucas home with her. Vanessa fumed when a New York critic refused to review Laurie's book. Brad refused to give up Leslie after Cynthia told him Les had divorced him and was interested in Brock. Lance was shocked to learn Brock asked Les to marry him. Chris refused Stuart's offer to stay with him while Snapper is out of town on medical business.

Stu learned Brad regained his sight. Lance resented Laurie for bringing Lucas home. Vanessa was overjoyed and insisted she didn't blame Lucas for the fire. Liz had a birthday night on the town with Stu. Nancy pleaded with Chris to allow her to see Karen. Lucas was determined to leave.

Leslie returned from her romantic rendezvous with Brock and found Brad at the apartment. Laurie convinced Lucas to stay while Lance reminded him whose wife Laurie is. Lucas persuaded Vanessa to set a surgery date. She frantically tried to cancel her publicity plans for Laurie's book but it's already successful. Nancy was distressed when Karen didn't acknowledge her as her mother.

December 1977:

Derek ordered Jill not to bad-mouth Kay when Jill suggested Kay was trying to buy him. Nancy told Ron they can't leave town without Karen. Leslie was torn between Brad and Brock. The Maestro rooted for Brad. Liz shunned a new "beauty wig" look. Brad confronted Brock saying he intends to win Leslie.

Laurie fought off Lucas' advances. Vanessa entered the hospital to undergo plastic surgery. Snapper returned and learned from Stu that Nancy is determined to win back Karen. Stu and the Maestro fell over each other while courting Liz

Leslie enjoyed the battle for her affections between Brock and Brad. Derek accepted a Christmas invitation from Jill, while Kay learned it's still possible to conceive a child. Snapper realized that Nancy's well and has a right to Karen but asked that Chris not be told of Nancy's plans until after the holidays. Lucas promised not to try any funny business with Laurie again. Long-absent Greg called from New York and considered returning home.

Greg returned. Leslie agreed to spend Christmas eve with Brad and Christmas day with Brock and Stu. Kay gave Derek a Jaguar, but was upset to learn that the ring she thought he sent her was sent by mistake from the store. Snapper allowed Karen and Chris to think a toy he gave Karen was from him, but it was actually from Nancy. Jill admitted to Greg that she loves Derek.

Did everyone on the show call him "Maestro"? Surely not?

I wish I could have seen some of the stories for Liz, I always thought she was just Jill's mother.

I guess this is before Jill stole Stuart from Liz? And this is building up the abortive affair between Katherine and JoAnn?

I didn't know Brad was around for a while when both Lucas and Lance were on the show.

Bill Bell re-used some of this with Caroline and Ridge on B&B.

Kay's lesbianni flirtation with Joann already happened. That took place in the early part of 1977. In the future I'll post the earlier snyopses for Y&R from '77 so you can get an idea of what was going on.

FYI--Anthony Herrera (James Stenbeck, ATWT) played Joann's husband, Jack.

Oh. I thought they wrote her and Jack out immediately after that story bombed.

I guess he was a prototype for Eric or Ridge Forrester.

I know he and Jennifer had had a lot of problems and she had been about to leave him for another man when she got cancer, but still, that's pretty fast.
