It's been widely reported that NBC wanted Conan to tone down his comedy for the 11:30 hour. Part of that may have been Conan trying to be "classy" for The Tonight Show, but alot of it definitely had to do with NBC telling him what to do. He should have fought them every step of the way though.

Meanwhile, I found THIS article someone at Nikki Finke posted. I read somewhere that Dave was offered The Tonight Show by NBC and that Leno would be moved back an hour(a counteroffer from CBS' intial 16 Million Dollars). And Leno is acting much in the same way Conan did. Someone should send this to Leno.

Oh come on! You know what I meant! His CRUDE comedy...his Masturbating Bear bit and stuff similar to it.

Has Big Jaw spoken out about what NBC tried to do to him around the time Letterman wanted to go to CBS, you mean? I don't think so. I know he is taking credit for Conan's ratings surge.

Leno's a total bastard, everyone in the business knows it. The people who go on his show do it simply because he gets the viewers and doesn't do hardball interviews or put anyone on their toes. Not many people in the business actually like Leno. He doesn't interact, socially, in Hollywood very much at all. In recent years his image has deteriorated behind closed doors quite substantially.

Howard Stern, who I am a big fan of, has hated Leno since he started and he's called this situation exactly right.

Zucker used the most interesting turn of phrase in a NYT article:

Society loves soap operas, eh?

Is that why NBC has only one, which it has threatened with cancellation (at its last renewal)?

If society loves a soap opera, why not capitalize on the love?

Oh...I see...you're using "soap opera" in a disparaging way...equating it to some kind of tabloid foibles.

Awww, Mark. That's a cute attempt.

But a bullsh!t one too. As I'm sure you're very well aware of. He could put 78 soaps in daytime and no one would watch. People, in fact, gave up on soaps, and no matter how well produced and written, they really wouldn't stand a chance. Unless they want a million viewers or two per soap.

People love soapiness, but not soap operas in daytime anymore. The numbers show it nicely. They've been giving up on them ever since their creation.

I've heard those stories for years as well. I've never been a huge watcher of late night talk since Aresnio Hall and Joan Rivers left the air. I don't enjoy Leno OR Conan for a completely shallow reason, I simply can't stand their physical appearance. They're both so STRANGE looking, Leno with that chin that is the size of Texas, and Conan... I don't know, kind of reminds me of a praying mantis or something. It's a tacky reason not to watch a show, but I can't help it. I don't mind Jimmy Fallon at all, but I find him quite attractive. Material wise, I think Kilborn really has a good sense of humor, and I find him the funniest of the lot. And he, like Carson, is a normal looking guy with an affable personality and a great sense of timing. At this point, NBC could air repeats of Carson (they already so that with SNL, don't they?) and they'd Probably pull better numbers in that 10PM slot.

    • I don't know if I could have seen that from her, honestly. But I feel like, outside of GH and her original DAYS stint, American daytime really didn't pay much attention to her, even though they should have.
    • Co-sign, 100% on this one. Xander was entirely in the wrong.
    • I'm seeing some interesting takes on this thread regarding Dani's behavior/personality, including right now. Here's my take on her: I think that Dani relishes in lighting people up. I think that's for multiple reasons.  I feel like Dani has probably largely been like this throughout her life. And that she gets joy in dragging people whenever she feels like it's necessary. I believe she feels like this is her being herself. I think one big reason why she's particularly giddy right now is because she's able to go back to acting this way, minus the hurt she's been dealing with due to Bill's affair. She got in Bill and Hayley's faces after their affair/wedding, but she was miserable doing it due to dealing with the hurt of that situation. Nicole's situation with Ted/Eva/Leslie allows her to act this way minus her suffering like she did at the hands of Bill. I believe she does empathize/care for her sister but is also interestingly enough rejuvenated by this situation. This situation is energizing her and making her act more like old self again, minus the being hurt by her own's husband's infidelity. I think Nicole's situation is a distraction for her from dealing with her own failed marriage to Bill.
    • Great episode, better than what the spoilers said. The gambling story was tolerable but Jon Lindstrom sucks in the role. Ambyr Michelle continues to shine. The diner and country club scenes were very well executed.  The Jan and Leslie scenes were very good! My favorite is Eva, now followed by Nicole.
    • Today's show was good. The only part I didn't care for were the Derek/Ashley scenes. I think they are bland together and Derek is very bland by himself. He is the least interesting character on the show IMO. I don't think they have much chemistry together. I appreciated Jan's reaction to Leslie. I like how regular/realistic her and Mona are as characters. Jan came across as very believable of being appalled and even hurt by Leslie's treatment of them and towards Eva in the diner.  Leslie continues to try and manipulate people with IMO her fake caring routine, only to show her true colors after she's confronted/called out for her treatment of others. I continue to dislike the way she mistreats Eva. Speaking of Eva she was great again today. I love her and I like how Martin comforted her in the diner. I liked that Vernon showed concern for her as well. They (especially Martin) will come around quicker to her before others (like the Dupree women) will. I also am glad to see her and Ted continue to bond and him behaving like a father towards her/helping her. He's the only one in her life who is fully trying to stand by her. I look forward to seeing their relationship grow.
    • Xander was screaming at Felicity.  He did do something wrong.  Felicity was clearly upset by it and Cat/Chad told him to stop.  That's fair.  No one deserves to be yelled at their job-and even I think this plot point is too preachy.  It's not acceptable behavior for anyone to do that.
    • When Derek finally appears with only a towel, and his chest and pecs/nipples are finally shown, I say yes.

    • Now, actually not. That thought had not even made it into my head, so, no, so far anyway, I've not seen that. Haven't seen today yet. What you're describing is warped & I think she's feeling genuine empathy & sister bond.
    • Xander was the bigger person apologizing to Cat when he didn't do anything wrong.  he wasn't yelling at Felicity whatsoever, he was asking if she possibly had given them the wrong order by mistake.  He was trying to get to the bottom of what was going on, but Chad/Cat were trying to white knight Felicity even though Felicity was being treated just like anyone else in that situation.   She was the one to bring the order out to them, and usually the person that brings the order out is the one that puts the order together.    I'm still getting a read on the Cat character.   I think she seems to work well when interacting with everyone other than Chad.   Perhaps the new writers can move Cat out of Chad's orbit into another orbit. Paulina has been written quite well the few times she's been on since the writer change.  I think Jackee is enjoying the new writing.. you can tell when she's on screen.
    • LOL - well, Peter was included in the grandkids' section, each named specifically with their $100K trusts.  It must have been the abs...

In Henry's will, he said it had to do with Hart having a chance at being a better person than his father, since his father isn't providing for him (I'm paraphrasing here, but it was about Roger).  Still a little surprised...
