November 10, 200916 yr Member I thought this might interest some, especially with all the recent talk about the genre dying. Fans rally to save daytime soaps on TV One TVNZ has announced it is to cease its contract with the distributor for Days of Our Lives and the Young and the Restless. The broadcaster says the shows have been on our screens for more than 20 years and ratings have been declining significantly. In a statement TVNZ said “We have decided that although there are many viewers who remain faithful fans, there are also many who would appreciate something fresh after such a long time.” One of those faithful fans is Northland viewer Morgan Collett who has set up one of two facebook groups aiming to keep the shows on our screens. He said that he always enjoys Days of Our Lives and the Young and the Restless because they are really fun and interesting with attractive characters. He has always looked forward to his afternoon soaps and says there is nothing else on at that time worth watching. The series will finish sometime at the end of October and an announcement as to what will replace them will be made closer to the time. At this stage Prime/Sky TV have no plans to take over the contract and screen these shows in New Zealand. The replacement shows will be an extra episode of Emmerdale, and the sorry excuse for a reality show, Coach Trip.
November 10, 200916 yr Member SONY should have, at least, reduced the distributor's fee to keep that network happy and to keep both shows on the air.
November 10, 200916 yr Member SONY should have, at least, reduced the distributor's fee to keep that network happy and to keep both shows on the air. Do we have any evidence that Sony did not offer to reduce the fee? I'd be surprised if they didn't, since they accepted 40% cuts in the US. Do you have a source saying Sony refused to cut the fee? Thanks, M
November 10, 200916 yr Member I know internation IPs are often a problem, but can these people watch NBC or CBS.com? It would suck to see your soap go off the air and know that it is still on someplace else.
November 10, 200916 yr Member At what part is Y&R airing over there? If its from the last year, to be honest, you really arent missing much

And last time I checked, there's hardly any evidence for alot of what you post on this board. This wasn't an episode of "Law and Order." It's a discussion forum. November 11, 200916 yr Member In a statement TVNZ said “We have decided that although there are many viewers who remain faithful fans, there are also many who would appreciate something fresh after such a long time.” Not just in New Zealand.
November 12, 200916 yr Member At what part is Y&R airing over there? If its from the last year, to be honest, you really arent missing much I think they were about 5 years behind. It would suck to live in New Zealand right now.
November 12, 200916 yr Member Network web sites are blocked for international viewers,so watching soaps that way is impossible, apart from trying to access them thru a proxy server, which is not very easy. Some shows can be seen on YouTube.
November 12, 200916 yr Member New Zealanders are really lucky--they stopped somewhere during the 2005 episodes... which means they never have to be inflicted by the terrors of LML and MAB.
November 12, 200916 yr Member New Zealanders are really lucky--they stopped somewhere during the 2005 episodes... which means they never have to be inflicted by the terrors of LML and MAB. Do you think knowing where Y&R was headed, creatively, was part of the decision to cancel?
November 12, 200916 yr Member Do you think knowing where Y&R was headed, creatively, was part of the decision to cancel? I believe it's definitely a possibility--a lot of the shows broadcast in Greece, for example, are done so because of either their high ratings, or their high praise by viewers and critics (whether that translates to high viewers is sometimes irrelevant for the acquisition). In the same vein, if some shows are a few seasons/years old already when they first show them there, and then they suddenly stop before the show crashes to hell, I view that as a very big coincidence . Long story short, yes, I believe they indeed do research on the products they are about to put on.
November 13, 200916 yr Member New Zealanders are really lucky--they stopped somewhere during the 2005 episodes... which means they never have to be inflicted by the terrors of LML and MAB. There is nothing lucky about losing a soap. It's like a family member dying. When Y&R was cancelled for two seconds in Australia I wanted to kill myself.
November 13, 200916 yr Member Haven't posted in months but I thought I might as well since it concerns me lol. Well Y&R is now finished and it ended just as Lily was being sent to Juvenile Hall for breaking her bail conditions by having Phyllis sneak in to see Daniel (who is being held in custody for Cassie's death) and Gloria has just discovered that Tom Fisher is alive and in town, while Brittany and Bobby's ruse saying JT is the father of Brittany's baby has been discovered by Vinnie who bugged Paul's office. Nick had also buried Cassie's clothes etc etc. Ironically back in 2005 i was downloading torrents of these episodes from the net and if I had kept it up then I wouldn't have missed anything but unfortunately back then downloading torrents just took too long and there was no Youtube (well at least not to the extent that it has grown today)so I eventually gave up on them lol. To be honest though Y&R was becoming a bit of a burden to me anyway so I won't be bothering following the US episodes on the internet, though I am dissapointed that neither Prime, TV3 or Sky are interested in taking it up. As for Days, it is somewhere during the Melaswen storyline (Jennifer on her way to the island). Days is still running and is scheduled to be taken off early next year. I haven't watched Days since 2004(1999 episodes) well except for the serial killer storyline which played out in NZ over the past year(gave up the show again just before Doug was killed as I lost interest). Bold and the Beautiful is running on Prime and seems to be somewhat successful...though i don't watch it anymore. to be honest though I don't think the current state of Y&R (or Days) had anything to do with the decision to cancel though because quite simply put TVNZ doesn't care about the two soaps enough to actually bother doing that sort of research. Both Y&R and Days have been treated as merely filler for at least the past ten years in NZ and I'm surprised they have lasted this long. TVNZ has been cost cutting for about three years now and I guess it just made more financial sense to extend Emmerdale to an hour (it still has a strong viewership) and fill up the remaining hour and a half with cheaper reality and Talk shows which will most likely get the same viewing figures.
November 15, 200916 yr Member Dion from both points you left off at Days and Y&R both shows get WORSE!!! ESP DAYS. Lord have Mercy. Days does not get good again until 2009. And Y&R good thing u stopped so u won't be subject to the horrors we see now
