Guiding Light Discussion Thread

I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of the fans just never noticed. Emmerdale, the UK soap I used to watch, dropped "Farm" in the late 80's but a lot of older fans still call it Emmerdale Farm.

James Lipton isn't much of an actor either, if the few GL episodes of that era I've seen are any indication, but he did have a sincerity and boy next door appeal which made it obvious why he was so popular. I wonder what would have happened if he hadn't left GL, if he would have lasted a long time, or if he was probably being phased out anyway.

Actually, the "The" had already been dropped by 1977. One of the TV reference books incorrectly states that the title changed with the first hour long episode. GL changed the lighthouse logo to the sunlight through the trees opening in November 1975. "The" was officially dropped from its title then. No, I do not think there was any significant reaction to it. Although the graphics were Guiding Light, announcer Allan Berns continued to say "The Guiding Light" for the next six years.

I read that in the reference book as well about when the title was changed. As I haven't seen much of anything from the mid-70s there is no way to have known different.

So basically until about 1981 or so at the end they were calling it TGL? That is confusing...

MG was right about the lack of focus on the subject of homosexuality -- especially where GL was concerned. I'm trying to think a gay-themed storyline besides Otalia and...I can't.

Well, Claire Labine was going to try a "Children's Hour" story...beyond that, the closest is probably Lucy's HIV-positive friend, who appeared during part of 95-96. I can't remember if they said he was gay or if it was implied.

There was also that strange, presumably unintentional period from 2000-2003 where I thought most of the younger male characters were a few drinks away from an orgy.

Fletcher was like the male Reva in a way as he was with many women over the years with Maureen, Claire, Alex, Maeve, Vanessa, Holly etc.

This article below is from February 1996 Soap Opera Update. The answer of course was not very long before Josh Taylor took over the role briefly:

A rather sad and bleak ad for Christmas isn't it?

I've heard Reva's rebirth was quite good and compelling to watch but the Cain part of the story was a complete farce. I'm more interested in Reva's 2nd suicide attempt where she runs into traffic from her running from her wedding to Kyle and was saved by Josh but thought it was a dream as Josh was no where to be found afterward.

I don't think that second scene was a suicide attempt. She was disoriented and wandering around without thinking.

I'd like to see what Long's vision of the Cain story would have been, although honestly I think it was just such huge burnout for the Reva character, too much in too few years.

    • I'm not sure it's as unpopular as you think.  I just think the show knew they were in a bind, and needed a proven couple for the viewers to invest in. Trying to reunite Vanessa and Ross had just failed in 87. I don't think Ed and Holly's affair was well received, as Simon and Garrett had a brother/sister chemistry. Enter Billy and Vanessa, who give you history and an out not to try and do a Josh/Reva/Billy triangle, which would've really wrecked the relationship between Josh and Billy. I'd have been ok with trying Vanessa/Ross again, and doing a Vanessa/Ross/Holly/Billy quad for a while. I hated Nadine. HATED. She had to be the most insufferable also-ran before ATWT's Julia Lindsay.
    • GROSS. Michael Swan was hot back in his ATWT days. Now he's 76 and WAY past his hot years.
    • Since she kidnapped, locked up and tried to kill her father's wife I'd say that is still a pretty big deal
    • I'm good with the gushing, too. There aren't many soap icons like John Black, and that's important to celebrate and remember. And yes, life does go on for other characters, but as they say, timing is everything. Going sky diving the day before the funeral? And during a week of shows that were so powerful emotionally? No.
    • No. There might have been a slight pause for dramatic effect after his "death," but pretty soon after they showed him in France getting plastic surgery and getting involved with his doctor, then planning with her to bring Christina to France. (She thought he had good reason to do it; she wasn't a bad person or anything). Now that I think of it, there must have been some kind of pause before that, during the 70s. Rita was accused of killing a private patient for an inheritance when she lived in Texas. Part of the backstory was that Roger had been there, too. Not sure exactly when or how long that was.
    • I've already stated that I don't like Doug being written as this meek and submissive. It was so lame watching him leave her like that. Vanessa can divorce him, but she then needs to get her thot ass into therapy. She's not only having sex with every guy she runs into, but is now having  sex with a skeevy perv on a poker table. I'm going to give the BTG some credit here. For months, many on this board were delighting in the Vanessa/Joey flirting and what they saw as chemistry. I think we're now seeing what the writers always intended -- that Joey is a disgusting POS wannabe mobster.
    • John Black actually was the ultimate good guy soap hero. So I don’t mind the town gushing over him. It’s deserved.
