AW was declining, and its audience was older. WBZ - the NBC affiliate at the time - was always preempting network programming for local or syndicated shows, or for local sports (they carried Celtics games back then). At one point, DOOL and Today were the only daytime network shows they carried. When the affiliation moved to WHDH in the mid 90s, NBC insisted as a part of the affiliation agreement that WHDH carry all the NBC daytime shows in pattern. So AW was back in Boston for the last few years of its run.

That lack of affiliate support was a big issue for all of the lower rated shows.

It became a self fulfilling prophecy as affiliates dropped them so they had less coverage and therefore lower numbers which in turn meant other stations would follow suit.

Likely, I believe she backed out to do Silkwood with Meryl Streep and Kurt Russel, directed by Mike Nichols. That was really the beginning of her 'Hollywood' era and hard work to be taken seriously as an actress. She already had problems being taken seriously for being Cher alone, so doing a stint on a soap wouldn't have helped with the movie career she wanted and would go on to have in the 80's. Her acting career would have probably been very different had she missed out doing that supporting role in Silkwood.

    • Yep. Access to the Vault works fine but upon downloading attempts an error message pops up.   Maybe it is just a temporary glitch.

    • Downloading isn't working at all.
    • I'm pretty sure this ep is  from Dec 73 From the Daytime Serial Newsletter Ian and Valerie Northcote are deeply concerned over Laurie's  life being increasingly dominated by hallucinations and fantasies about Georgina, the former owner of the house the Reddins recently bought and are now living in. Doreen Post (Linda Purl) was involved in that story .Perhaps she was going to be revealed as Georgina's daughter? Wonder how that story evolved and whether it was wrapped up before cancellation? and thanks to @skylark

    • Many thanks to @skylark and @DRW50!
    • Thank u so much! I love that show and the more I see of it the more I want to find more of it even if it’s just in script form. But that house and especially the room looked like Victoria Winters room from dark shadows lol  this was great find! Thanks
    • I genuinely thought when they said she had been throwing up, we were going to get a pregnancy story. I’m actually not convinced we aren’t. Especially the way she and Doug danced around her own infidelity.
    • Shouldn't it be the other way? I don't think Taylor Hayes is playing Rebecca Budig.

    • And the most detailed discussion I've seen from an industry figure about some of JFP's worst choices as a producer (steamrolling over writers) was from another woman, Megan McTavish.
    • IMDb is definitely incorrect, because the final week of episodes in 1974 is uploaded to Youtube in audio form, and Mark and Laurie are there until the very end. The last episode shows Mark going back to the priesthood. I looked at the newspaper and the earliest reference to their house being haunted by Georgina is in December of 1973. This is dated Dec 14, but this same synopsis ran in the papers until the end of December in other publications. So it must have been within those last 3-4 months. I think Stephanie Braxton joined around 1969-1970 so that's probably right. I saw it stated in other newspapers that David Gale joined around September 1972.
