First time poster, but long time lurker here. This will probably get wordy, but I finally have the courage to post on this board (you guys get pretty hostile really quickly, so it may be my first and last post).

I'm a 52 yr. old female who has watched soaps on and off (when I had to work) since 1977. I first watched Y&R in 1973 when I was away from home on a summer job. I loved it then. However, when I became a regular soap viewer, I hated Y&R for two reasons: it took forever for them to move story, and it was always so dark (lighting wise). It depressed me and I hated that when I was in my early 20's. Never liked Dark Shadows (not into sci-fi), and for the most part my favorite soaps where AW, Texas (even tho' it was only on for 2 years), and Guding Light. Then, OLTL became my favorite, especially after AW was cancelled.

I realize that I am no longer the "target demographic" viewer, but I can tell you that I know what I like and what I don't like in a soap. Too much fairytale stuff bores me to pieces. I never liked Cliff and Nina Cortland, therefore I never liked Peter Bergman. However, since the year Jack married Phyllis, I have been hooked on Y & R. It's the only soap I tape and/or watch daily, anymore. It's those two actors that have realed me in. I like Sharon and Sharon Case, but for totally different reasons that I like Phyllis and Michelle Stafford. There were always those girl next door types vs the red haired sirens in my real world. I know guys that are exactly like Jack and Nick (some I'm even related to). So, their storylines work for me.

The usual posters on the Y&R thread here, are often the most talented and thought provoking posters I've ever read on a soap message board. Rarely are there cat fights, tho' they've been increasing lately for some odd reason. I know there are a lot of male posters here, and I've really enjoyed seeing things from the male perspective. I usually tell if a poster is young (below the age of 30), or if they've had the decades of soap viewership that I have had. I love the diversity of the male vs female posters, the young vs the "seasoned" posters, and the caucasian vs all other. All of this to say that the diversity on this board is the primary reason I come here daily. No other soap board intrigues me this way. You guys rock!

I use to post on another board years ago, and one lady and I became very good friends off board. She never knew the actor's names, never knew who wrote, directed, or produced anything, because she said it destroyed her ability to enjoy the show for what it was. I totally agree with her. After reading the Y&R threads each day, I can see where folks get so sidetracked by the "details" and lose focus of why they even watch the show anymore. I really don't care who wrote what, I care about the story. I've lived long enough now to actually know people in real life who have done so many things that I see on my favorite soaps. It's that relatability that makes me tune in each day. When a soap gets too crazy for belief, I will dump it (even if I've watched it for 20 years like I did when Days became all about the DiMera family.) I've never known anyone like Nikki (example only), so I really can't buy anything this character does or doesn't do. I don't worry about contract negotiations and the like because that crap destroys whatever I may feel for the character they portray, as well as the actor.

It's just my opinion, but I truly think if people would just ignore all the "business side" of soaps, they would actually find themselves enjoying their soap again. If they still don't enjoy it, then ditch it.

'

I'm late to the proceedings but... welcome to the board, pharmie! :)

I think your perspective on Y&R will be an additional asset to our crazy Y&R threads.

Nope.

- Sharon loses time

- Sharon sold her baby to a shady lawyer

- The lawyer would want his profit. But instead he gave the baby to Alice

- Therefore, it is NO stretch at all for Sharon to have had twins (but forgotten). Because he got an unexpected two-fer, the shady lawyer sold one (Cassie's twin) and gave the other to Alice (Cassie).

Therefore the twin is out there.

Yes. Because Cassie's twin isn't Cassie.

Im still not sold that Philip's death is being undone.

Yes, on yesterday's show, Cane said the following words:

Cane: I tried to put her off, but she's determined to get to the bottom of this, and it's just gonna make her more suspicious.

Langley: Relax.

Cane: How can I relax? I have a life here now. I have a woman and a family that I am crazy in love with, and if I lose that--

Langley: No, no, no, you won't, you won’t. Listen to me, Cane. Nina's gonna do a little sniffing around. She's gonna come to a dead end. She's gonna give up.

Cane: I don't think so. Your wife has not forgotten about you, Phillip.

Who will hold Adam's?

Who will hold Adam's?

Well, since all of Adam's jewelery prob belonged to Ma Chérie Amour, I'm thinking Victoria. Sabrina would have wanted it that way.

I'm so glad Tricia Cast is back. Kay/Jill/Nina are gonna be so explosive when it all comes out that either one of us viewers or of the ladys are gonna suffer heart attacks...

In all shortness due to lack of time: even with flaws (I don't consider the general mood too dark, BTW) Y&R under MAB is the closest to really great soap opera I've seen in years. Hell, she even brought back those little moments: classic friendships, long gone family members pop up. And there is always an afternath: so Kevin and Jana get legally off of all charges - like on a any other soap. But there are serious consequences, social consqences. How novel! At moments like these I feel right at home in Genoa City which is really far away from real life but at the same is the closest to it in all of television.

I'm mailed the weekly SOD Insider, and it contained this nice behind-the-scenes snipped about Amelia Heinle and Thad Luckinbill's 18-month old son:

Luckinbill-Heinle-JPI-09-L.jpg Y&R's Thad Luckinbill) and Amelia Heinle (J.T. and Victoria)

—JPIDevin Owens: When I first met Y&R's Thad Luckinbill (J.T.) and Amelia Heinle's (Victoria) real-life son Rowe last year, he was only a few months old and already quite the little linebacker for his age. When I spoke to Thad for his feature in our Father's Day issue, I asked if Rowe, now 18 months, is still a bruiser. "He's huge," chuckles the proud papa. "He's just a heavy kid. He's big boned. He's been off the charts pretty much since he's been born but it's been fun." Although Thad is perplexed as to where Rowe inherited the big-boy genes, there's no doubting who his parents are. "As far as physicality, he looks like both Amelia and me," notes Thad. "He's got Amelia's head and a lot of her facial features like her nose but he's got all my coloring. I've cursed him with my paleness and his hair is the color of butter." To find out more about Thad's real-life role as a father, check out "Parent Trapped" in your new Digest.

Oh dear. Hysterical pregnancy? Is this a real thing? I'm NOT liking this turn, if it goes farther down the road. If she just "thinks" it in her mind... I'm ok with that, but if she gets big with no baby... that's TOO OUTLANDISH for me. Unless it really can happen? I'm confused.

Medical dictionary:

A condition in which a woman believes that she is pregnant when she is not. Certain signs and symptoms suggest pregnancy, such as the absence of the menses, although conception has not occurred and therefore there is no embryonic development. The condition may be psychogenic in origin or caused by a tumor or endocrine dysfunction.

I did some reading, and I guess i'ts a real thing! I still think it's ill advised to do this, many viewers will think theyr'e making it up.
