13 BOURBON ST. was a soap pilot with Michael Malone & Josh Griffith, 1997. FOX made an initial commitment for 65 episodes to air on weeknights at 11 pm. It was set in NOLA with a lead female character Marigold Katrina Jorgensohn, a singer wannabe from a small town in Indiana who had come to NOLA. John Beck, Lonette McKee, Michael Park, Henry Simmons & Nicole Forrester had been cast by Meg Simon along with a handful of others. Linda Gottlieb was EP with Michael Malone & Josh Griffith as co-HWs & co-Creators. Paul B. Margolis was an Associate HW. On the strength of the FOX commitment, a pilot was shot. All of Michael Malone's papers including this script are said to be at Duke University, Raleigh, NC.

I know that the character of Lila and the transformation of Bobby into Shane (or vice versa) is supposed to have been based on Bourbon St, but I don't recall knowing that Henry Simmons who played Tyrone Montgomery had been in its cast.

I've read a few times that the fertility god with the glowing eyes (involving Grant and Cindy) was also a plot Malone took from Bourbon Street.

I thought that was something that he "appropriated" from OLTL. But, you could be right. It might've related to The French Quarter & practitioners of Santieri, or even voodoo.

Did Conboy steal that prop for GL..they had a glowing eyed mask or tiki..that they showed once and someone had some sense and it was never shown or mentioned again.

I would put nothing past that man. He, to me, was the real honest final death knell. Of course, he had the help of his trusty "helper" Ellen Weston, known for only writing once for one show, and not again, not ever. I talked to a soap journo who interviewed her & they said she didn't even know how to talk like she wrote the show. Secretly, they were appalled.

To give MDP a small degree of credit, I rewatch some of the episodes and I'm not bored. However, I'm struck by two things: the disregard for character development and lack of longterm plotting. And when I compare it to spring/fall of 1988, her tenure looks better in comparison. With that said, Efulton you're so right. Mary's story was botched from the beginning. The timing was not right for it because of the Vinces, nuMJ and Kathleen's departure, etc. I'd really like to know who was in charge of approving MDP's stories/characters. Why was nearly every MDP story a failure in some way?

I don't see Jimmy Smits listed in the Actor Guide on the AWHP, but he's listed in the closing credits (and in fact starting about 5:19 he is visible behind the credit crawl; I did not find the actual scene included) as the Plains Motel Bartender.

The episode he's in must be from early May 1985 as Brittany is recuperating in the hospital, still deaf, and Sally is *stressed*. The second episode must be from November 1985 however with Carl hauling Marley around in the Arizona desert.

There are probably multiple factors at play, but I do think that dePriest's overly simplistic approach to characterization hurt the long-term prospects. What storylines were you watching? Did you feel like something specific was derailed or did it just not have a direction in the first place?

The Sin Stalker was structured as a finite story and once Lisa had learned to trust Jamie it didn't seem to have any further impact.

Reginald was the focus of so much and then not long after dePriest left he was killed off. Was there any long-term impact other than ensuring that Vicky had money to throw around?

AW in the 80's was pretty much plot based.

Most characters were never around long enough to evolve and involve viewers. They played out a particular story and then were gone.

And characters that were recast often were completely different from previous incarnations

Eg Richard Bekins as Jamie compared to Laurence Lau's Dr Jamie Frame.

Did Kim Morgan Greene's Nicole resemble Anne Howard's character in any way?

What AW needed in the 80s was a continuity person. 

Someone who knew the show and the characters like the back of their hand and who could inform every new writer and EP, that way there would have been a more cohesive flow throughout the years.

Hell, it seems like Margaret DePriest didn't even know what her predecessor was doing lol remember Michael's brother, Eugene? Who didn't change his last name to Hudson.
