You're objecting to the governor of the largest state putting out classy statement with a message of talking out differences instead of resorting to violence?

It is. I've been mostly sick this week and online very little and now that I have an off day to be online, it is just everywhere and I honestly don't want to see it. A friend of mine who is opinionated, but has done a great job on his path to self-discovery is being attacked by...nobodies IMO because he dared to say he felt indifferent. He's allowed to and knows the history. Quite a few people do. Yet people (and bots) are under posts saying trite comments as if my friend does not care about kids. Or people are mad because he actually cares about the school shootings more than that man. So a problematic man trumps innocent kids?...GIRL, BYE.

I can't with the lack of logic when there are people who have a right to have their own opinion and not like someone who gave concrete (and easy to find receipts for the obtuse) reasons for them to not like said person. You earn respect in life, you don't instantly get it in death. If the obtuse (who aren't immediate family members and can shut up) don't get that, they can scroll on by or block. Simple.

"Great," I said, when I heard the news, "just what the right-wing needed: a g*ddamn martyr."

I, too, am not shedding any tears over his assassination.  I'm not even sure whether I can muster any sympathy for his loved ones, because it's clear something or someone made him who and what he was.  I mean, you don't learn to hate as many as he did on your own; you have to be perfectly taught.

If I'm sorry for anyone, it's for those who will suffer because of the right-wing's need for retribution.  If those of us who'd been marginalized by their agendas weren't in peril before....!

I don't condone any form of violence. ANY FORM. Now... if I have to be honest... I had never even heard of this person. Consider me extremely lucky! Probably saw his face in passing on social media, but never knew the name. I don't watch people like this nor want to hear their agenda. They are the ones that are constantly obsessed with the gay community. We DON'T CARE about them. We don't lose our time with them.

Aaaaand it's not my business or responsibility to wish everyone condolences in this life.

It's ironic that you made this post about the Gen Z gravitating towards the GOP the same day a few hours before Charlie Kirk who played a mid level role in that was killed.

What 'example' of Kirk's does Newsom think we should we all be following? He spent his life spewing hate and targeting minorities and women. He was never some principled commentator looking for open, earnest debate and dialogue, and it's typical Newsom for him to cast him as such.

We're fortunate that Ezra Klein (one of the pundits our more ossified leading Democrats actually listen to) came out last week pushing for a shutdown, but in terms of every other opinion he is just another Beltway pundit who wires everything for the right and the GOP. So of course he too is weeping for the fantasy image of Kirk they have rigged up after the fact.

My only consolation is that KIrk will soon become to the right what he and they have made into so many others - a brief martyr, then ultimately memory-holed and forgotten when they're on to the next outrage. Same with the mainstream press chasing the next Trump press hit. He'd hate that. Good.

Debating people with words and not weapons, he laid it out pretty clearly.  He didn't endorse his ideas.

In you last post you claimed to be worried that innocent people would suffer because of this. Newsome is trying to turn down the heat. That's the more important message, one that would be diluted by scoring partisan points to appease the Bluesky crowd.

Is that what Kirk spent his life engaging in? Debate? With words? Or did he make terrorizing and destroying the lives or livelihood of public and private figures his mission in life on his airwaves, in online media and IRL? Did he not repeatedly flirt with promoting armed insurrection and paramilitary action? If you wanted a list of people he actively targeted we'd be here til the evening at least.

Innocent people will suffer because of Kirk's death, because of what Kirk spent his life doing and avidly promoting doing to others: Targeting innocent people for hate and personal and professional destruction. They are acting like he was some normal pundit now but no mainstream media outlet would publicly go near Kirk or Turning Point USA during his lifetime, because they know who he was and what TPUSA did.

Gavin's usual desperation to prove he can 'see both sides' and overweening ambition has led him to make bedfellows with some deeply hateful people. Kirk was just one more. And before we take the DC party line on the terrors of some cloistered liberals on Bluesky (I have no social media accounts, BTW) maybe we can circle back to what's so genuine, rational and levelheaded by comparison to Bsky about spending all of one's time marinating their brain in the Nazi fever swamp of Twitter/X. Which actively skews pundits' brains to the center or far right.

Not remotely what I said, but you already knew that. You can either speak to my points (which you had no answer for, from Kirk to Twitter/Bsky) or stan for Gavin Newsom, but you won't be doing the latter in my replies.

Good! There is some hope left.

There's long been an idea that young voters are the future of progress. I never really believed it, as you can see just how many younger voters have been indoctrinated into bigotry and cruelty for many, many years now. There are also many who (rightfully) feel the country has no future, so they will vote for fascists because at least no one else (besides rich white people) will have a chance.

I heard today about HBCUs getting threats, even though the suspect is white. Many are just going to use this as an excuse for what they already wanted to do. That's why you have scum like Nancy Mace or Derrick van Orden in Congress who remind us it's all the fault of Democrats or the press and then when asked about the response when Democrats were killed, they just say they aren't going to talk about that or it's ridiculous. This is all theater to keep rolling out the agenda they were already rolling out. So is the people on the right who pretend to care about the Ukranian refugee murdered in North Carolina, even as they cheer for Putin, who has done who knows what to everyone she ever knew or loved.

I'm sorry about what happened to Charlie Kirk and I'm sorry for his family's loss. But when I see articles saying that he is now seen as MLK, I'm reminded of his own views on MLK.

They don't even care enough about the man himself to focus on his own words and wishes. It's all fodder for the same mill, never, ever stopping.
