The Dynasty release picture wise was a thousand miles better than Dallas and Knots Landing and Falcon Crest.

Good luck in getting it for 50 anytime soon…LOL

I had forgotten that James Hougton was also on The Colbys besides Knots Landing. I floved him….

Ricardo Montalban was another bad/odd casting on The Colbys.

And Emma Samms was totally wrong as Fallon…they should have kept the Faux Fallon that Jeff thought was the real Fallon.

Do you think the Colby's failed cause it was too much like Dynasty? Spinoffs are difficult to make succeed in any genre...but shouldn't there be elements that set the spinoff apart from the parent show?

Knots landing and Dallas were similar yet different...same with Rhoda and Mary Tyler Moore.

1) THE COLBYS appeared to be too much like DYNASTY. It looked like a complete carbon copy. They even named it DYNASTY II, for God's sake (which I thought was an incredibly ego-maniacal thing for them to do)! It didn't seem to offer anything different than what viewers already got with DYNASTY.

2) The show came along at a time when primetime soap operas were starting to lose steam. People were getting tired of them. DALLAS was already on its ninth season, KNOTS on its seventh. They had been around forever.

3) This was at a point where DYNASTY had severely disappointed fans with the resolution of the Moldavian Massacre. The thin veil of deceit around the show was finally crumpling. The audiences/critics could no longer deny the show was sh!t. And that was when they introduced a spinoff. Really bad timing.

All this plus there could have been issues of timeslot etc.

As for DALLAS and KL... Wow, I don't think there were any similarities. At all. It's one of the reasons why the show was able to stand on its own two legs and eventually found success.

Joan Collins thought Dynasty 2 was a rip off of the original and refused to appear on the show. Dynasty 2 really hurt Dynasty ratings wise that and the Massacre storyline. After the first episode of the 85-86 Dynasty started dropping in the ratings although the cliffhanger and the season opener of 86-87 ranked very well in the ratings.

Shout Factory must be sniffing Adam Carrington's toxic paint with that ridiculous price. That irks me because I want to support such releases, but I can't in good conscience put The Colbys before about a dozen other things that need my $120.

I think the rationale behind the argument that TC hurt DYN was that the writers' attention was too split and their creativity got thinly spread over two shows already after several seasons of DYN. For me, TC is just different enough to get away with apparently recycled stories/characters. The similarities are clear, but it is titled Dynasty II so that's expected and why would they abandon their successful formula that won them a spin-off to begin with? I'm really pleased that DYN brought over TC characters in season 9, a brilliant move.

    • Corey was the first. Then Ingo 5-6 months later. And then Vince was the last gasp.
    • Funny, that's the one I loved the most!
    • And then to break the trend, Thorsten Kaye (German-British) on OLTL.
    • @ReddFoxx I adored Eva and Leslie's fashions. Bringing back the 80s, LOL.

They're different characters, for sure. Dani is a "Have" but she still has the underdog, aspirational element, and yearning, for Independence. Similar to Erica Kane. When the show gets to digging into Anita's career; I want them to reveal more unresolved issues between the two. I would find it believable for someone like Dani to have grown up with resentment and complex issues being surrounded by BRILLIANCE from every corner.
    • So yesterday I wandered off on a tangent about Elvis Presley, off the top of my head. Probably no one cares but I want to correct facts. Elvis Presley did have a twin who was stillborn. They named him Jesse Garon Presley & in a level of their emotional life he was very real to Elvis's mama & to a lesser degree to Elvis himself. I will now return you to your regularly scheduled discussing post-Ron prattle.
    • They are the absolute stars for me. I’m delighted every day that my feelings about them from the special on the show, turned out to be that and so much more. I genuinely feel episodes are better when they’re featured. This cracked me the hell up especially with Leslie listening

. This episode was so good, I will be rewatching when I get home tonight. THIS was classic soap opera.
    • I can barely remember who was the person they tested her with for the AMC revival but I *do* remember kinda liking them together (anyone remember better?  lol)  But yes, I feel the same.  It might not help that when I became a regular viewer Tad was presumed dead and she was with Craig...  I do remember that my sister's best friend had been an AMC viewer with her mom and dad and that they were very excited that Tad was returning... OK I instantly remembered that.  And now once again I'm sad about what coulda been with the reboot.
    • Well, that is weird. I do not see him but I only have him on Ignore on 2 accounts.
    • In the preview for the show back in February on Entertainment Tonight, Jeresa the costume designer was specific about each character's economic background, personality, and the character's personal fashion preferences.  Very much about the characters and not the actors. She said Eva is a thrifter, so her normal daily wardrobe would be something from a thrift store, and if BTG buys it new, they intentionally make it look used. So what you said fits about the type of thing a lower income person would buy for a fancy event.
