Melrose Place Spinoff: Discussion Thread

That one-dimensional bitch we saw in episode 10 wasn't the same Amanda from the original series. The "old" Amanda may have been quite a bitch, but when she was nasty towards other people she usually had a good reason. Besides, the old Amanda still had a heart and she cared about the people she loved (e.g. Billy and Jake). So far, all 5 returning characters have had barely anything in common with their personas from the original.

They should definitely make Victor Webster a series regular. Maybe Brooke Burns, too. Even though we have seen very little of her so far, I like her character. She could be a great nemesis to Amanda.

David/Lauren don't have any chemistry at all. By the way, I wonder how long they will drag Lauren's prostitution storyline? -_-

One important thing about the original was the apartment complex. Basically, it was the heart and soul of the show. Right in the beginning, we got to know the residents and where they lived. What do we know about the complex now? The only apartment we get to see quite often is Jonah and Riley's. We still don't know how many apartments there are and who lives where.

Oh, before I forget: The story with the German film maker in episode 9 was so full of clichés. Of course he was from Bavaria (FYI: Bavaria is NOT Germany, it's just one of its 16 federal states) and his name was Franz (that name was popular 70 years ago). And the actor's accent sucked big time.

Amanda's return was lame. At least they didnt have any of the newbies crap on her like the other alumni. I couldnt get over how horrible her hair was. Why didnt anyone think to comb it before letting her on set?

Depressing. But true.

I expect a cancellation announcement soon.

This show reminds me of the Colbys and Models Inc. I REALLY want to like this, sometimes I pretend I do, but... :(

Could Chuck Pratt come back and at least give it a soapy/Melrose Place feeling?

Apparently Bethany Rooney who used to direct both the original Melrose and 90210, directed episode 12(which is supposed to be the first episode featuring the new tone).

Could Chuck Pratt come back and at least give it a soapy/Melrose Place feeling?

He'd make the show even more boring IMO, besides, I don't believe the CW hires any one over 49 lol.

I expect a cancellation announcement soon.

I think how well it does overseas will determine whether or not it's renewed.

theres supposed to be a new tone? How so?

From Slavkin & Swimmer's interview with EW.com

Can you elaborate on the tonal shift?

SLAVKIN: Now that the characters are no longer suspects, they can have a great time, they can focus on their careers, they can get into bed with each other without having this ominous cloud hanging over the building… But this is still Melrose Place. There’s still going to be intrigue on the show.

And from an LA times article

This shift doesn't mean "Melrose Place" will turn into the Happiest Place on Earth.

"We wound up in a place that was darker than we originally thought and we wanted to make this course correction and this was the opportune time to do it," Ostroff said. "Not to say that the show won't still have story lines that are intense and not to say that the show won't have controversial arcs for the characters."

I'll be happy if they just make Victor Webster (Caleb) a regular. Move that sexy gay publicist into the building and develop his personal life. Caleb is fantastic interacting with Ella and he'd be fantastic having scenes with other hot men!!!! I also think he should come back to get even with Amanda. How dare that COW fire him!!!!

You know a show is in trouble when a shift happens.

The main problem is that the CW knows that Melrose has failed but they're still obsessed with making it a hit show. I like the dark tone of the show, it's just that most of the characters don't work.

I guess the show won't debut in most countries until 2010. The new 90210 isn't a huge success internationally either.

True.

Ostroff picked Swimmer & Slavkin a bit too soon, turns out. OK, they have a bible, but a bible is not enough. Being a fan of the original show is not enough either. More options were supposed to be considered.

How do you know more options weren't considered? We already know Mark Schwan was close to writing the pilot. Surely there were others too - we just don't know about it. And if the ratings were higher, having a bible ready to go would be enough, being fans of the original show would be enough? What would be enough?

If I read their bible and their script for the pilot we've seen - I wouldn't have hired them. Simple.

As for considering others, there's that LA Times article.

Ostroff makes bad choices. I don't know why she picked these two head MP 2.0

They were HORRIBLE on Smallville. I don't know if this show stands a chance, the cast of characters aren't the greatest IMO

Yeah, there's just that quote of Dawn saying she was impressed by them. It doesn't say that they were her only options, unless I missed that part.

Just because a show has low ratings and it's not the best creatively, but you believe there's something there, some good elements that you can build on (which I believe Melrose 2.0 does), doesn't mean you should cancel it so quickly. Sometimes shows hit their stride in season 2 or even season 3.

Yes, except that I kind of liked their scripts for Smallville and new they would end up show-running it.

But, first, it was wrong to resuscitate this show. Second, if they've decided to do it anyway, like I said before, it takes thorough preparation. You can't just expect it to be a HIT! because it's tied to the original. In fact, many viewers are put off, repelled precisely because of that. In the end, predictably, a lot of hasty, not thought through decisions brought us this mess.

What did they do that was horrible? Do you blame Kelly Souders & Brian Peterson too?
