It is indeed sad that they so completely squandered this moment. It's not that many shows in history that gets to celebrate a 50th anniversary and they really should have done more with it than they did.

I know that Emmerdale is addicted to disasters, and has been ever since the success of the plane crash, but was it really necessary to go back to that well once again for this occasion? Couldn't they have gone in a more positive direction...some kind of jubilee instead for example. There is always so much death and destruction going on and it is exhausting to watch misery all the time.

It has been stated repeatedly in this thread that Emmerdale has really done a number on its own history and it's moments like these when that really comes back to bite the show. They have so successfully removed almost all the ties to pre-plane crash Emmerdale that it's almost impossible to look back to those years. Killing off so many of the younger generation of the extended Sugden family has proved disastrous. Sam & Sally, Jackie and Mark all died without having children, not to mention Joe, and the ones who did have children like Sandie and Rachel have seemingly been erased from history. For all intents and purposes it seems that Emmerdale wants us to think that the show began in the mid 1990s. Anything that happened before (the show's golden years in my opinion) is obviously not important anymore.

I think what they should have done, instead of the storm, is have it be an anniversary for The Woolpack. Maybe it could celebrate 100 or 150 years or something. That would have given them a reason to bring back some characters from the past with ties to The Woolpack for the festivities. Dolly, who was introduced to the show as a barmaid, Marian Wilks, whose father used to co-own it and Kathy, who also used to work there, are obvious choices. They could also remember that longtime customer Seth actually had two sons (Jimmy and Fred) and bring one or both of them back, with a family. Other possible visits could be Lynn and Louise. Maybe Sandie as well.

It would also have given them the opportunity to show some clips from the shows past and remember people and events from bygone years. Just like an anniversary celebration should do.

I think what you have highlighted--the subtleness that the anniversary episode could've had, is what networks don't want. Heaven forbid we have an anniversary episode that doesn't contain murder, mystery, and mayhem. I assume TPTB think that a simplistic stroll down memory lane with a celebration of the show's community does not suffice. I think they'd be pleasantly surprised that fans do like the simplistic at times.

Something that always boggled me with soap opera fandoms is that it is so easy for us (the fans) to devise well thought out stories to honor the history of the various shows; however, these folks that get paid hundreds of thousands cannot. I know network heads play a role in it (too) but damn. I literally took you probably 5 minutes to devise a proper anniversary episode that would've been just as moving and not with all special effects and hollowness. A lot of y'all on this board need to highly consider becoming writers if you aren't already.

There are sooo many other characters I would rather see leave than Priya. Many, many, many other......

But it seems that it is Fiona's own decision to leave, which makes it slightly easier to take.

I just hope they don't kill her off and leave the door open for her to return. I've always loved the Sharma clan. I still haven't forgiven the show for getting rid of my sexy Nikhil.

That was the actor's choice, but I do miss him.

She was such an underrated part of the show. I always wished they gave her a stronger spotlight. Glad to see it was her decision and I hope she leaves alive. I've never cared for Jai much, except for the surprisingly wonderful short-time romance with Holly and the subsequent con-woman story. Rishi was okay, but everyone knows Nikhil was the best of them. One of the best characters of the '10's actually.

Emmerdale producer Laura Shaw has explained the reason behind the show's special funeral scene.

"We knew when we decided to do a joint funeral for Faith and Liv that it would need to be a very special and memorable funeral for two such hugely epic and much loved characters," the producer said.

Unlike Annie Sugden, who didn't get any kind of worthwhile send-off.....  <_<

But they didn't really give him much material during the time he was there. He literally used to have episodes of him just popping up on a bicycle and saying a cute line. They didn't toss him anything until that last lap with everything with Gennie.

Didn't they just have Victoria walk into the fields and spread her ashes like she was some random?

Yep. I guess she just wasn't as hugely epic and much loved as Faith and Liv.

That was Annie's land, but they could have still done more.

I agree about Nikhil, but I do think the actor was probably going no matter what. He seems to mostly be into racing.

Jokes aside, I never get how these shows do these half-assed sendoffs to the matriarchs and patriarchs that started the show and feel they suffice. My mind instantly goes to the sendoff they have Nancy on ATWT, which I felt was more about Katie than Nancy.

I just miss seeing Rik Makarem's handsome face on my screen. I swear after he left, my interest in the show started to deplete. Once Ashley died and Robert soon left, I really haven't watched since.

Emmerdale stopped caring about the Sugdens 30 years ago, sadly.

With that said, what they did with Annie was still better than how EE treated Pauline Fowler.

I'll give you that. How they killed off Pauline was horrendous.
