Thank you for that. It was fascinating to see all the aspects of the plane crash and its impact on Emmerdale (and on soaps in general) discussed so thoroughly. I remember when I watched it originally and it was indeed riveting. But now I have mixed emotions about it. On one hand it did apparently save Emmerdale from cancellation and death, but on the other hand it set it on a path that, to me anyway, has still led to it dying, only more slowly. And I don't at all agree with the idea that Emmerdale was boring before the plane crash. It had a very distinctive identity that set it apart from all the other soaps. I found it interesting that that was one of the things that attracted Phil Redmond to it, since the changes he started ultimately led to the extinction of that special identity and turned Emmerdale into just another generic soap. There's really no difference anymore between Coronation Street, EastEnders or Emmerdale.

I may be in the minority, but I really miss the old Emmerdale Farm years, but at the same time I realize that had the show stayed that way it would probably no longer be on the air. So the big question then is, has it been worth it? For all the people that have jobs thanks to Emmerdale, most certainly, but for the show itself...? If the show had ended back then at the very least we would all have been spared the sight of some of television's most loathsome characters ever created.....

Well, some more information has been coming out about the new Sugden..... It looks like he will be Jack's son after all. The result of an affair Jack had between Pat's death and the start of his relationship with Sarah. And, he's apparently gay. So I guess we all know where this will be heading.....

Most of that came out in an article a month ago - someone edited it afterward but not quickly enough.

Being tied to Aaron means he will probably only last a year and not make it out alive. We'll see if they avoid being as lazy as they were with Jamie Tate and Tom King.

I'm nitpicking a bit I know, and I am grateful that they add a Sugden to the show, but I would have liked it if he could have been Joe's son instead. Just to have a different branch of the Sugden family tree live on. They killed off Peggy's twins, and Joe never got to have any biological children on the show. It would have required any change in timeframe, since Joe had a relationship with veterinarian Ruth Pennington around that same time (1987-88) and she could very well have been pregnant when she left.

So do you think they are possibly setting up for a Robert return too? And the two brothers to face off for Aaron?

As someone who used to love Aaron, I grew to hate him by the time I stopped watching full-time. I grew tired of him sulking over wanting to change Robert. Like it grew tiresome.

I think not having Diane there to assimilate this character into the Sugdens is going to be hard to convince too. I do agree that having made him Joe's son might've been better b/c you wouldn't need Diane there for that. You kind of need Robert and Andy there too.

Is Kelvin open to returning? I doubt Ryan or Karl would want to reprise their role as Robert.

I don't think he wants to (and given his political views I'm not sorry).

I do miss Diane, but she barely ever seemed to have ties to Robert in his last stint. I do wish they'd bring her back long enough to at least meet John.

I imagine there's more - I haven't seen his account in a long time. I remember he and John Bowe saying a lot on the topics back when they were on the show.

I agree Diane should make a brief appearance at the very least, if the show has any interest in John being anything but another of Aaron's corpses.

    • That era is so weird...they made a big deal out of all three of those characters and then they just..disappeared! Not that I am complaining. We talk about the bad out of character writing for Alex under JFP..but this was one example that may have led them to write her being so obsessive with Nick.  WHY would Alex accept Flock of Seagulls guy as her brother? They had her in one scene (setting up the Alan return) complain that Alan abandoned her...she blackmailed him into leaving town and she had been angry at him for helping Brandon with Lujack and also using Spaulding for that dumb dreaming death thing. Endless scenes of her with Simon, I can't believe Bev wasn't bored to death! I would also add Pam writing the scene where she lets Ms. Sally die in front of her to protect Alan and  the writing for Alex could be screwy even before JFP.
    • On this day 34 years ago the final episode of Dallas and came in at an astonishing #2 in the ratings after two straight seasons of weak ratings. Interesting Knots was #27 for that week as well:

    • Thank you for clearing that up. I wasn't watching GL regularly yet at that point, but seems to me I should have remembered the big wedding after Leslie's death (which I do remember) described in the profile. Is there a web archive of SOD summaries, or are referring to your own personal collection?
    • I was bummed that 2.0 ended because Mcpherson (headwriter) had really set up some interesting stories and we never got to find out where the stories would go once they resumed production on 'season 2'. I remembered the EP (Ginger Smith) and a lot of the stars gave a lot of credit to McPherson being able to come in on very short notice and come up with stories/plots (I think it was a very short turnaround time of a few weeks).  It was nice that she got to redeem herself after her year long Days stint was not well reviewed/liked.

    • It seems like a setup for failure to review a single episode of a soap, but Cleveland Amory was a foolish man.  His taste was so predictable, that one wondered why bother reviewing a medium he so clearly disliked. (found on Facebook retro TV group) Another case in point of his misogyny from his review of Dark Shadows (Can you imagine the magazine with the widest circulation in the country insulting its customer in this way today?)

    • They could easily be re-created, or even re-shot in different ways, especially if they were re-shooting scenes at some point, as well.
    • The Ted recast really is a shame because now they won't be able to do flashbacks to the best scenes the show has done to date.
    • That would be an AMAZING twist.
