2 questions:

I was reading the Ultimate Soap Trivia book published before the end of Loving and they still refer to The City as LOV(heart) NYC; such a better name, does anyone know why it didn't stick?  Maybe because it's hard to write the title in a publication?

Did Lisa Peluso go away, get recast, and come back as Ava at some point?

I think it was a working title and there was very loud opposition for it from the soap press because the title was difficult to format in magazines. Personally, I’m glad they switched it though I didn’t like the title “The City.” I found the working title clunky.

I think it would have been very 90's to name it after the loft building, like "75 Bleeker St." or an intersection like "'Prince & Charming"

IIRC, too, Roya filled in while Ava's mother, Kate, was in the hospital.  One day, it was Lisa, as Ava, at her mother's bedside; and the next, it was Roya, decked out in her finest Erica Kane-esque wardrobe.

My God.  The resemblance between Roya and Susan Lucci is STAGGERING.  I wish they had coaxed Roya into joining AMC as some long-lost relative of Erica's.

If nothing else, I hope Susan and Roya at least met. Maybe Susan could have jokingly told her the Rosemary Prinz, "Don't get stuck here," story. Were AMC and Loving at the same studios?

A 1993 promo featuring one of the blink and you missed him Curtis Aldens as well as a bit of the Faison crossover.

I was thinking about Clay Alden today because I was trying to recall how the whole Clay/Alex story worked out by the end of the show.  I forgot about the recasts of both characters and was wondering if anyone had any insights about the recasting.  I know that Loving was a show that favored a recasting throughout it's history but I was wondering about these two.

Did Clay come back because the actor playing Alex wanted to leave?  Thus the disappearance of Alex to South America?  I saw an interview with Randolph Mantooth where he mentioned working everyday and I wondered if the original intention was to get rid of the character?

Was Larkin Malloy a good Clay recast?

Did the character's personality change with any of the recastings?

Did the recastings coincide with the recast of the Clay's parents?

Randolph Mantooth and James Horan, Alex #1 and Clay #1 respectively, were both on the show from 1989 - 1990. Based on the way the story was structured, the real Alex had to return eventually. Mantooth's contract may have been up in Spring 1989 around the time of the South America story and this was used as a negotiations tactic, but I don't know that for sure. Mantooth left of his own accord in early / spring 1990 with Robert Dubac replacing him. This was around the time of the merry go round of head writers and producers. I don't think Dubac was well received as Alex, and that may be why they paired Alex and Egypt and had them leave town in spring 1991. By that time, Ava was paired with Paul Slavinski (Joseph Breen) and Clay had impregnated Abril Domeq (Marisol Massey) but was casually seeing Carly Rescott (Coleen Quinn), Ava's sister and the mother of Paul's child. Dubac's Alex departed at a time where the show wrote off a bunch of Aldens (Wesley Addy's Cabot was killed off, Chip Albers's Curtis was shipped off to the Persian Gulf, and who knows what happened to Augusta Dabney's Isabelle). Alex's role was minimized by these departures. With that said, there was easy ways to work Alex back into Ava and Paul's story.

James Horan's Clay was written out a short while later in the summer of 1991. There was a change in producers and writers so Clay was rested for about six months before they brought back all the Aldens (Celeste Holms' Isabelle arrived in November 1991, Larkin Malloy's Clay arrived in January, and I'm pretty sure the show planned to bring Curtis back in the summer of 1992). Malloy and Holms played the poorly conceived "Clay Sullivan" storyline which I don't think was ever effectively used. Malloy's Clay doesn't work for me in what I've seen. I like Clay brooding and sullen, like Parlato and Horan. Malloy seems more misunderstood. To be fair, Malloy was brought back on the cusp of a writer's change (Mary Ryan Munisteri to Addie Walsh). Munisteri is not a writer many have fond memories of from across her soap experience, but I think the material from her period that has popped up has ranged from slightly below average to stunning. For instance, her interpretation of Isabelle Alden as a snobby aristocrat is vast departure from Augusta Dabney's stoic but motherly matriarch.

In the fall of 1992, Malloy went out on a medical leave and Dennis Parlato took over temporarily. When Malloy was set to return, he was fired and Parlato continued in the role until the show was cancelled. I believe Parlato played the gaslighting of Stacey Forbes and was then paired with Gwyn, Deborah, Stephanie, and Tess in no particular order. The daily summaries I read of the Cradle Foundation story, where Clay was secretly hiding his father and was blackmailed into marriage by Deborah Brewster, is probably my favorite story Parlato's Clay was involved in. There are also some good bits of Clay and Alex (upon Mantooth's return) when Alex decides to impersonate Clay in order to trap Dante Partou, Tess' villainous ex-husband. I'm not sure if Alex and Clay interacted much after that arc. Parlato's Clay seemed more villainous like Horan, but I think that was more of a change in story direction (and writers and producers) rather than writing.

Randolph Mantooth returned in September 1993 right around the time Agnes Nixon took over from Millee Taggert. Alex was reintroduced during a storm by running into Dinahlee Mayberry, who was Ava's friend. Dinahlee and Alex didn't overlap during Robert Dubac's run (Dubac left in March/April 1991 and Dinahlee first appeared in August 1991). I don't know if the intention was to use Dinahlee as a third wheel to Alex and Ava, but Alex was clearly brought back to give Ava a stronger love interest (she had been with Leo Burnell and Jeremy Hunter, but there didn't seem much place to go with either even though Peluso and Leclerc had decent chemistry).

    • Ted also stays at the hotel and Vernon is probably aware of that. As much as Ted wants to be back in Nicole's good graces he might feel obligated to tell if he saw Vernon coming out of a woman's room since keeping secrets got him in so much trouble before.
    • One more thing on Tuesday's episode, did anyone else notice the weird blocking? Belle and Eric were thanking Sarah, and worrying about Lyme Disease (which must be a red herring, I can't believe we're watching a PSA about inspecting for tics).  Then, Belle turned to EJ and threatened him with a lawsuit.  EJ acted as if he hadn't heard the entire conversation that was happening two inches away from him.   I like EJ, but a little of silly/mean EJ goes a long way.  His sarcasm during that scene felt out of place, regardless of Eric's presence.  When he bugs his eyes, and feigns innocence, it is a little too OTT for my taste.  I understand that he was the punching bag for most scenes, but EJ feels more mature than resorting to funny faces.  Isn't rather quick to worry about Stephanie's sales, she just debuted the book yesterday in their timeline?  And why is everyone against Jada and Theo?  Jada could use a boytoy, and this doesn't feel like a "forever" romance.
    • I dont think he knew Leslie was staying there. I know this is all for the drama and mess which Im here for, but Vernon really could have easily rented a small studio space where he and Sharon could practice lol.
    • I understand that no one could ever replace Bernau, but Ron Raines is somewhat of a different beast. Still great (to me) though. He spent his entire TV run in one role, that was impossible to do justice correctly.
    • Again, Bernau's illness impacted that. It's pretty obvious Pilon was always meant to be temporary. I read an article from that period that said he was working on both Ryan's Hope and GL at the same time. So he wasn't on contract for either show. (Maybe that explains somewhat why his performance was so low energy, because he was overworked doing two soaps). Later, they put him in the opening and in commercials for the show. That must have been because they were certain Bernau was not returning. Around that time, they approached Zaslow about being the permanent replacement for Bernau. He turned them down and suggested coming back as Roger. Pilon stayed so they could re-introduce Roger and write an exit for Alan. I'm guessing if MZ had not wanted to come back, they would have had no choice but to keep Pilon (which I don't think they wanted, or maybe Pilon wasn't interested) or send out a casting call for a new Alan. I think they wanted to avoid that because they were really determined not to let the nature of Bernau's illness to become public knowledge. At this point, they were still keepin up the fiction that he was going to return even while this stuff was happening BTS.   Yeah, it seems crazy now, but people forget how stigmatized AIDS was back then. I'm convinced the idea to ask Zaslow to take the role came about so they could replace Bernau as quietly as possible. Everyone would have been so surprised it would have taken the focus off Bernau not returning. It makes a kind of twisted sense. Still, thank goodness Zazlow said no and they said yes to his suggestion to return as Roger. The way everything worked out gave GL a few more strong years. I guess it's the nature of soaps, you never know what things in real life will end up strongly impacting the show, both negatively and positively. (Something just occurred to me. If Zazlow HAD said yes to playing Alan...he would have had to play being in love with Reva.

    • I truly do not understand why this has not happened. It's so un-Carly-like not have confronted Joss already.
    • He definitely had it going on back in the day
    • I have long given up on logic and Mayor Laura Collins! It makes about as much sense as Luke being elected mayor over Lee Baldwin in the 80’s, maybe even less sense. She committed manslaughter as a teenager, was involved with a mobster (I guess credit for them taking Smith down), had a shoot out in her home and killed another mobster in self defense, thought she bludgeoned her stepfather to death, then was catatonic for years. Her current husband had a twin that was a serial killer, had his own breakdown that threatened lives, and most recently hid his brother for treatment and that allowed Ryan to escape and kill again. And had hook killer Esme as a houseguest and is raising her child. I don’t care for Sonny anymore but their relationship is just another thing that involves suspension of belief to watch the show. I wish someone on this show would remind these adults that they used to pull way worse stuff than this! I would love a scene where Laura is sitting with Lulu and tells her while she is not happy this is nothing compared to what she got up to when she was young, and maybe even some understanding that she would also do stupid stuff if she believed in the cause. Olivia reminding Dante that he was wild as a teen and this isn’t that. Felicia reminding Anna that they were being shot at when pretty close to Emma’s age. These characterizations are just so basic. Have some fun with the actual history of the show. That kind of wink would mean more to me than just name dropping some random fact.
    • There are no dumb questions here, we've all known each other long enough to fill in information without shaming each other.  We want you to be happy @carolineg.  Your POV as one of the few women here is vital. So, please, I hope you never feel as if any question, idea, or opinion is ever silly or stupid.  Your daily reminders about the realities of manicure and menstrual management has become a part of the personality of this thread. As for Hank, while I'm confident there's a plan in place.  It is frustrating that they announce these casting so far in advance that it is tough as an audience and wait it out until the thing happens.  I'm happy they didn't blow it the second Mike was in town, a week after meeting Liam. So, it is a slow burn. And, conveniently, he lets us know when his episodes air.

Speaking of silly stuff, is anyone bothered by the placement of Tony's pocket on his shirt?  It is so odd that whatever bargain bin they found it, would choose to place a huge black pocket over the floral design?
