Me too. I think it’s quite sad how the show had a lot stacked against it, tried to be something to everyone, and was cut down before it had a chance to really get going.

It was an international hit (especially in Europe), and I think it tells you something of its popularity that it recently had a complete rerun on CBS Drama in Poland! It’s sad that the US audience wasn’t there. It’s also sad that NBC kind of short changed it in the end by moving its time slot and not having every state air the show.

I loved how Sunset Beach had real location shooting every week. It really made the location feel like another character, and something that really set it apart from every other US soap.

It actually only got to ep 500 on CBS Poland sadly (or so I heard from Polish fans!)

Exactly.  In the past, I've heard Spelling was crushed about SuBe's failure; but really, if he had exerted some patience, he might have avoided the hurt feelings.

Yup, daytime is a completely different animal than primetime. Too bad he didn't learn that until it was too late.

i dont get why Elaine & Paula were dropped given they just discovered their relation to cole. Plus Gabi was also Paula's sister. They had ties

Why was Mark killed , he seemed popular and Eddie being killed I dont get Spelling or Tomlin were just fire happy

  • I get Tiffany gone, given the character never clicked and issue with the actresses playing her

Those promo photos are great.  Isn't odd that at the turn of the 21st century we were really turned on by wet jeans?

I love the picture of Meg with her laptop on the beach. This was pre-wifi and internet everywhere!

I agree it was dumb to drop them, but I assume they wanted to bring in Meg's parents and needed to clear the canvas, hence Elaine and Paula gone.

To me, Elaine was a good character and the actress did very well. Not sure why the production team felt as their acting was not good. But for Adrienne as Tiffany - total fake, it felt out of place.

Laura Harring did not like the fact that her heroine was made weak and trusting, then she accepted invitations from David Lynch, Nick Stabile, the contract ended, he didn’t want to renew it.

for the first season, Kelly Hu, Franz, Banco, Harring, Taylor Young left. Season 2 Nick Stabile, Peter Barton, Vanessa Dorman, 8 people immediately looked for new heroes

I miss Sunset Beach. I just wish it had been allowed another year or so as I think it would have really hit its stride. I'm still annoyed they got rid of Francesca who was such a good character.

20 years ago yesterday (Dec. 31), NBC aired the final episode of Sunset Beach.

I can't believe it's been that long. I wonder how the stories would have turned out through the years if it was still on today.

I think having Meg coming to Sunset Beach to kickstart the show was good..but I think had the show run longer than almost 3 years..she would have been cut.

Off-topic but @DRW50 who on earth was the Living Legend-Not at that point in time? I know the Time one is Y&R.

Speaking of OT, let's try to solve that Queen ABC puzzle. The other women who appeared at the 1996 event, according to Wikipedia, are:

Kelly Ripa

Eva La Rue (who didn't appear at another one for six years)

Robin Strasser (one and done)

Gina Tognoni (one and done)

Erin Torpey

Kassie DePaiva (who, like Susan, appears to have gone to all of them)

Lynn Herring (one and done)

Vanessa Marcil

Jacklyn Zeman

Sarah Brown

ETA: Interestingly, it looks like ABC never had anybody from The City or Port Charles attend these things.

Funny thing is that,  Susan Ward who took months off to do a film, actually signed a new contract just before NBC canned the show
