ATWT: How to bring this show back to greatness again

Hi Everyone,

This is my first post!!!

1. Give Will a life outside of Gwen. Those two work well together but Gwen has outgrown Will and he pretty much is her bestest cheerleader, not her husband.

2. Ditto for Jade, allow her to be "Jade" but outside Willen. Jade is actually a lot more interesting than the other teens.

3. Give Henry a storyline and love interest... that loves him back!

4. Give RH/Paul a long vacation. Apparently, he has checked out and needs a break. I have liked the character of Paul since the late 80's, but now the character is boring and pitiful.

5. It's a pity that the actress that plays Meg is a Synder. She has great chemistry with both Holden and Jack.

6. Show Luke more than four times a month.

7. Find something "real" to do with Carly... she is too old to be back at square one, every other year. It's not cute anymore.

8. Katie, Katie, Katie---Give the woman a job and let her be by herself for a minute.

9. Stop bringing Simon back, unless PL is willing to stay at least two years. If not, end Skatie for good.

10. PLEASE never put Dallas and Jade together. Dallas is a sweet character that serves absolutely no purpose.

11. Let GM/Dusty find his next female co-star. Someone that he actually has sexual chemistry with that isn't a weak, over-priviledged whiny type. I had enough with Justy and Lusty I & II. Heck, maybe Jade and Dusty should hook up...at least they could scheme together and I bet they would have some serious sexual chemistry.

12. Bring back Jessica.....Let Margo have a real storyline.

Welcome To the board :) And that was a fantastic first post

I would like to keep Passanante.... She keeps me interested MOST of the time, and I think she has a very intelligent sense of humor. Goutman, however, can go. The man is clearly past his prime; I have a feeling his attitude has become too laissez-faire. I would actually love to see Jill Farren-Phelps take on this show. Her dictatorial "change everything" style is exactly what the show needs.

Ummmm..No!

Um, regarding JFP, GH can keep her. Or at least keep her from poisoning any of my soaps. You think ATWT is bad now, I don't even want to know what it would be like under JFP.

If Jill Farren Phelps becomes EP at ATWT, I will sign up to join every single focus group there is.

Ummmm..No!

I really don't know who this Woman is but if Soapsuds says no to her, then I agree :D

Why would anyone suggest JFP to be EP of ANY show? Apart from the first couple of years (pre-Maureen) at GL, her track record since has been a disaster:

- fatally wounded AW by killing off Frankie

- adversely affected the quality of both OLTL and GH

The trouble with all soaps today is none of the writers have any respect for the law. I remember when I first watched soaps no one admitted it. Now they are back to the ridiculous AGAIN. Emiloon humming, attempted murder etc, Craig running Roseanna off the road, and now free to spend her money? IRIS IS BACK TO DO WASH, RINSE AND REPEAT. Sorry been there done that.

They keep beating the dead horse. Now carley helped steal a very expensive necklace. Dusty shoots Craig? Who had his brakes fixed, Would he have been happy if Johnny was in the car with Dusty?

I think Dusty needs to mourn for his wife for a month or two. her body is hardly cold in the ground.

back burner some of the ones who have been front and center for the last year. Lets see the vets. Does Kim even have a kitchen anymore? Does Bob run the hospital? Does Barbara design clothes any more? I shut the show off because of Hogan S. then came back when he left.

can't get the original back make them a new character. The last two Craig's are absolutely NOTHING like the original. SB reformed and made me root for him .After hating his actions with Betsy and Steve.

This show has a very talented ensemble cast. They need to use them all. I am sick of hearing the same words come out of the same mouths day after day. JMO.

Totally Agree with that statement, and that may just be the key to everything that is wrong with the show, sure we see the same characters everyday, which is a major problem in it's self, but the fact that is the same repetitive talk everyday by these characters that makes it so much worse, if these characters had a new story with different dialogue it would be a little bit better, but these stories have all been beaten to death so many times, that I just don't care to hear it anymore.

Here is a new example of the show repeating itself, for the first part of the year, Meg and Paul argued about Emily during every show, saying the same things over and over again, now all you have to do is replace Emily with Craig and it is the same story again only now Meg and Paul are arguing about Craig during every show, and saying the same things over and over again.

Give these few characters they show new storylines or just plain get rid of them, I am sick of the same crap day after day, and looking ahead at everything I have read for the next few weeks it is just more of the same, with no end in sight.

Here is what we have character wise IMO

Craig- has atleast 3 storylines currently

Dusty- Wrapped in Craig's storylines

Lucy- Wraped in Craig's storylines

Meg- Wrapped in Craig's storylines

Paul- Wrapped in Craig's storylines

Barbara- Wrapped in Craig's storylines

Susan- No story at all

Luke- Sidekick to Jade and Lucy- no real story

Jade- Wrapped up in Will and Gwen- again no real story for her

Kim and Bob- No story at all

Lucinda- involved in Katie's mess- again no real story there

Mike- Wrapped in Katie's storyline

Katie- has about 2 storylines going right now (Loving Mike or is she loving Simon, and Oakdale Confinenal's new story)

Carly- wrapped in Katie's storyline

Simon- wrapped in Katie's storyline

Jack- No storyline at all

Dallas- No storyline at all

Jessica- No storyline at all

Margo- No storyline at all

Tom- except for one week, no storyline at all

Casey- No storyline at all

Maddie- No storyline at all

Will- has about 2 storylines right now (Iris's return, and the music storyline)

Gwen- has about 2 storylines right now (Iris's return, and the music storyline)

Nancy- only see her when she talks to Katie once a month

Lily- Sort of has a storyline blooming but it is not shown very often

Holden- Sort of has a storyline blooming but is not shown very often

Lisa- No story is seen on screen once a month maybe

Kevin- has not been seen in months

So pretty much if you are not in Gwen's, Katie's or Craig's World you are not in a story

1. The main problem is that there really isn't any reason to tune in everyday. Things that have happened in the past 6-12 months are still occurring now. Only a handful of characters actually get storylines (Katie, Paul, Dusty, Gwen and Will, and now Craig).

The rest either are merely supporting or never on at all. Characters like Mike and Carly are on a lot, but they're definitely "supporting" Katie. The fact that Carly is supporting Katie doesn't make sense since IMO the roles should be reversed, but that's really how I see it now. Same w/ Maddie and Casey who, while sometimes they got their own storylines (like the slasher one), they basically "support" Gwen and Will amd their problems.

Craig has basically replaced Emily as the "villain" of the show: everything that Emily does is in relation to either Craig or Paul. Meanwhile, everything Meg does is in relation to either Paul or Emily (and now Craig), so she hasn't been driving any storyline for well-over a year now.

Jen dies and it's all about Dusty. I'll never understand that. I think most people would have bought it if Jen left and then returned a few months later w/ a new actress. Sure, her death scenes were amazing, but I would have given up those 3 or 4 good episodes for her to remain on the show/be re-casted/leave town for a while. Then less than 2 months later, Dusty starts flirting w/ Lucy. It made no sense whatsoever. It's as if the writers just killed off a character (which IMO was a huge mistake and has already hurt ATWT) to pair Dusty w/ Lucy. Bad move. The writers probably didn't put much thought into killing off Jen. But as much as I wouldn't say that the character is super-important to be in Oakdale, I think it was really important that she wasn't killed off. The death of one character can really destroy a show if they don't handle it properly (ie. AW and Frankie Frame's death), and in ATWT they really fell through w/ the aftermath of her death BIG time!!

And then Lily, Holden, and Luke have a storyline, but their airtime is significantly less than the other storylines' are, so they're not actually driving the show either.

The Hughes don't have a storyline, despite what the writers promised. Okay, so Casey and Adam are on a lot, but when they say "the Hughes family" getting a storyline, I thought that we'd be seeing a lot more of Margo and Tom, as well as Bob, Kim, Lisa, and Nancy.

2. The other big problem is that there's really nobody to support anymore. The men are all jerks. Are there any nice men on ATWT? Dusty and Paul are both losers IMO, Mike and Jack are big jerks at times, Craig is just evil, Will's severely messed-up, Adam has something nasty up his sleeve, Simon is a pig, etc. I guess the only "nice" men are Luke and Holden, but they don't have their own storylines.

The women are just pathetic. Why would I look up to characters like Katie and Carly who are no better than children? They're complete idiots, really! Sometimes I can't watch their scenes b/c they make fools of themselves. Other characters, like Meg and Gwen, are really watered-down by the men in their lives. Emily's a total psycho and should be killed off or sent to prison by now. Lucy and Lily are just "too perfect" and annoying/spoiled. The only decent female characters are Maddie and Jade, but Maddie doesn't have a storyline of her own anymore and Jade is just seen as the "bad teen" so it would be really hard for viewers to see her as anything else anymore.

3. Then there's the problem w/ the character balance which is really annoying. Some characters just don't get any storylines, and after a year-and-a-half or so, it's just to the point where it's beyond frustration and anger and more towards hatred at the show for "pretending" to not realize it. The viewers are not idiots, so they need to stop treating us like we are.

I know that generally CBS is better after sweeps, but ATWT could learn a lesson from GH (trust me...this is the only time that I'm going to say that GH is better than ATWT, so don't worry). Sure GH is really shameless when it comes to sweeps and is not subtle about its attempts, but there's a reason why Laura's return was so effective for the show: it shows that viewers want history, they don't want re-writes or re-casts. ATWT has a good, well-rounded cast from all age groups. So why are they limiting themselves to anyone under 40 (w/ maybe 1 or 2 exceptions)?

The show probably has the best history of all soaps, yet they continue to neglect it time and time again. Characters don't have to come back! They already have plenty of them. ATWT killed off a character w/ a lot of history (even though she was young) and then brings back characters that really aren't needed?? They have 8 members of the Hughes family on contract, so why doesn't the family have a storyline? IMO, none of it makes sense b/c ATWT has a lot going for itself...it just settles for the mediocre and boring time and time again.

BRAVA!!! BRAVA!!!

It's out-of-the-air rants like this that need to be printed out and sent to TPTB. You summed exactly how you and so many others feel.

Honestly, the only way ATWT is ever really gonna see a great amount of change is if A) Jean Passanante is fired, and B) Chris Goutman goes with her. Otherwise, nothing major is gonna change.

1. Integration - just an example - Paul/Em/Babs in a scene the other day and while the baby was mentioned, WHERE is Barbara's reaction?

2. On that note - resurrect that kid. I don't care HOW they do it. James snatched her, with the faintest of pulses, Craig was in the hospital that day and took her. Jenny Ryan had amazing soap genes and years of potential story, not only in the present and the future. I want Paul and Emily to reunite, they put the 'fun' in dysfunctional for me, but most of all that kid should be alive. She is a Stenbeck after all! Not to mention at the moment, other than Johnny and Daniel, every kid on the show is either blood related or being raised by the Snyders.

3. Give Barbara a love interest.

4. I think it was a mistake having Tom quit as Craig's attorney - would have given Tom and Margo a great dramatic story.

5. Get Paul away from the Snyders. Paul Stenbeck Ryan? Should NEVER be playing Farmer in the Dell. It was frankly a relief the other day to see him switching bullets!

6. Keep Vienna on for Henry.

7. Keep Craig stirring things up.

8. Where are Casey and Maddie? At this point, IMO, they are the far more interesting pair out of the teens.

Most of all, acknowledge history and interaction. Where was the mention of James during Emily's pregnancy, given ALL of the history between Paul/Emily/James? I may be wrong, but it feels like Carly and Gwen haven't had a scene in a while. This show operates in a bubble right now, and it's very frustrating to watch.
