ATWT: How to bring this show back to greatness again

I haven't watched an entire episode of the show since this summer. Today was the first time that I watched the majority of an episode, but there were a lot of times when I just couldn't stand it anymore and changed the channel.

I don't think I'm missing out anymore. I still read the recaps, and they never make me interested in what's happening.

I think my problems w/ the show have already been mentioned well-enough by other posters.

The one thing I'll say again, though, is that the character balance (or lack of one actually) is a big turn-off for me. Even characters that I normally like are really annoying when they're on almost all the time.

Also, the fact that none of my favorite characters don't get storylines, and haven't had one in years by now, is definitely a big turn-off IMO. It's not as if they're all "old" either (b/c I guess that means you're not interesting enough for a storyline :angry:). It's really sad when not even 1 of your top 10-12 characters on the show aren't on more than once a week.

There's just ONE thing that needs to be done to "fix" ATWT. PLAY THE FALLOUT.

Yes, there's an annoying amount of repetition in the storylines. But, let's face it, there are only so many variations on a theme.

What's inherently wrong with the show is the character's actions mean squadoosh. Zip, zilch, infinity times nada.

Paul's baby dies...he never told his mother on-screen. Honestly, you'd swear it doesn't even affect him. He's bopping along, seething in anger about Craig (I guess...now that a plot requires it..) planning to marry Meg (or not marry Meg, honestly Jack had the line of the year last week when he said he couldn't keep track of whether they were 'on' or 'off', neither can I) around endless discussions of Craig. Who gives a bleep? He's planning his third marriage in three years!!!! With three different women!!! You'd think losing his sister and his daughter would give him something else to think about.

Ugh...the SkMatie/Carjack mess. Carjack started out playing the fallout of their break up...right until Pissy decided to throw Carly under Simon to "mix things up". (per her SID interview, this is how fans stay invested in couples. *insert groan here*) Meanwhile, Mike and Katie had their endless summer of sex. (nothing new there...) The inevitable happens...Simon screws Katie. Does the earth shake? Does the news sweep through Oakdale like wildfire? Of course not, because Carly/Simon/Katie/Mike have barely talked to anyone else in months. Sure....Mike gets to explode. Carly gets in a couple of nasty cracks, and runs back to Jack. HAS IT CHANGED ANYTHING? Nope...Carly can't stay mad at Simon for twenty four hours before forgiving him and encouraging Mike to make his marriage work. It's all plot, plot, plot and no emotion. Especially now that OC II: Let's Squeeze the Viewers Dry needs to be hawked. I'm sure two minutes after Katie's "revenge" is unveiled, everyone will have forgiven the Little Dickens and gone about their merry way. *And even if the fallout is coming, it doesn't excuse four months spent trying to invent drama in a quadrangle that never existed. I swear, I never thought Carly and Jack would be part of any plot that just had no legs to it whatsoever. If the Quad doesn't walk away with SOD's "worst" in some category, I'll eat my hat.

Dusty/Lucy....the Lusty 1.0 was boring, Lusty 2.0 is worse. Dusty could have had plenty of meaty stuff to play on...letting Em rot in jail, blaming Lucy for Jen's death, solidifying the Ryans into a somewhat normal family unit for Johnny's sake. But nope, each of those was tied up in a little bow to get to the real drama, Craig's improbable return and the ensuing custody fight. It's taken Craig less than two months to threaten Dusty's custody of Johnny, even given his track record. And as much as I suspect Craig's plan has been carefully orchestrated to get the threat of those kidnapping charges off the books, it's been accomplished so murkily (we'll never know what the deal was with Dusty's accident, trust me) there's no suspense.

I could go on (Willen annoys the heck out of me, this time last year they were poor kids with no prospects, and now they're rich and Gwennie's the next American Idol..) but it's all the same. No focus, no depth, and no story integrity. And it's not like they don't have the time to explain story, all they need to do is cut the repetitive dialogue and pick anyone's p.o.v, and tell it.

I've reamed GL, but lately, even just skimming watching the show, I know the character's motivations. It's usually impossible to say that about ATWT. It seems like it should be the easiest thing for the writers to fix, doesn't it?

I guess the one thing is really motivation, isn't it?

I agree PJ. Just today Barbara addressed Emily shooting Paul. I thought she didnt know. I mean she was never told on screen. She was never featured after he was shot. Finally it was addressed in the script written by Judith Donato. Why did it take so long for it to be brought up?

I'm not sure Babs was ever told of Em's shooting Paul directly on-screen, but I think Babs has snarked at Em about it before. It is a crime that Babs hasn't played more heavily in Paul's story over the past year. There is so much history there between Em and Babs, you'd have thunk they'd have been at each other's throats. That would have been more fun than Paul's revolving women.

I would say the biggest things ATWT has to do to fix itself would be:

1. As PJ said, play the fallout. They should have had months of material from the slasher storyline, the ice storm, the ball and Hal's death in particular, and yet, except for Maddie and Casey and their tertiary storyline of her recovery from her rape, we've seen almost nothing from any of these. You can have character-driven work from plot-driven stories, and the key to that is letting the effects of the plot ripple out amongst everyone in the town.

Doing this would also involve Fix #2, which is...

2. Use ALL the characters in town, and rotate them regularly. I used to love Gwen and Will, Paul and Meg, but now I am so sick of them I can't bear to watch them in ANY scenes. Gwen and Will especially have become the Teflon Couple, as none of their "tragedies" stick to them (except Rose's death) and they just bounce over to the next major story within days. They have the highest episode count by far, month after month, but they've worn out their welcome. They need a honeymoon out of town, off-screen, STAT.

But beyond the temporary fix of changing the main 8 who are in our faces too much right now, they need to really utilize the depth of their bench, and rotate others into main stories again. Tom and Margo have shown they're still capable of front burner work, Dallas hasn't been used at all since he arrived, Luke needs some more meaty stuff, Barbara is languishing, and of course, Lucinda needs more than one measly page of dialogue a day to really go to town, etc. The town has multi-generational inter-connected relationships all over the place, and they aren't used enough. Where was Katie when Casey got stabbed? Where was Mike when Jen died? Why isn't Nancy seen with her family more? Why haven't Carly or Emily had any scenes with Rose's daughter since that was revealed? Why hasn't Barbara commented on the stillborn birth of her granddaughter Jennifer, or been warning Meg about the lure of Craig? Why hasn't Henry checked in with Maddie in months, since she's made such strides in recovering from this summer? Scenes like that would go a long way toward rebuilding the broken ties around town, and would get everyone involved in stories that have become too insulated.

It's so obvious who JP's favorites are: Paul, Meg, Dusty, Will, Gwen, Emily, Mike, Katie. I'm so tired of having them shoved down my throat every day. Balance is REALLY needed back on ATWT.

I agree. I wish writers didnt have favorites. They need to write for the entire cast. And you are right the Key to ATWT being better is balance.

I agree with whoever said that Jean Passante needs to be fired. And Goutman.

Re-hire the guy from back when Carly was 1st introduced.....or wait. Was Goutman there still back then?

I'd wish cancellation on ATWT if Stephen Black and Henry Stern were head-writers again and if John Valente was EP. That was one of the show's worst periods.

Douglas Marland created Carly before his passing.

I honestly think that Goutman needs to go. IMO, he's been on the show for too long, and b/c of that, he might be too involved to realize how bad the show has gotten.

I understand that writers always have favorite characters, but in Passante's case, it's gotten way out-of-hand. When only your favorite characters have storylines all the time, it's out of control. Just today I realized that the whole PEM fiasco has been going on for almost an entire year! From the beginning of January, the whole triangle has been happening. Paul, Dusty, Emily, Mike, and Katie rank as my least-favorite characters. And b/c they're on all the damn time as well, Meg, Will, and Gwen are soon becoming less-likable IMO too.

And the characters that Passante doesn't like but writes for anyway have lost their touch. When Martha went on maternity leave, I was absolutely relieved b/c it meant 3 months w/o Lily. It's the same w/ Carly. I cannot wait for Maura to leave, and hope that she takes a long maternity leave b/c her character has just become pathetic. I don't even feel bad for Carly anymore: it's just embarrassing to watch these storylines that she's involved in.

If the writers have favourites, then why do they write so badly for these favourites??? I completely agree with P.J. about character motivations and character-driven storylines. The show hasn't had any that were long-term in years. Everything is all about plot and I feel like I have to fill in the lines or wait months before I realize why so and so did this and that. I shouldn't have to read a frickin' interview to know what the heck is going in *insert name here*'s head.

I also agree about fallout. ATWT sucks at it. Last year, I bought it was so great how they built up the Craig/Jennifer dynamic, had them sleep together only to completely ruin the whole thing by making Jennifer a complete victim..which was really not worth it in the end since Mike went back to Katie. Arghh!! I could give a dozen other examples where the show did a great job building something up only to have the storyline fall flat on its face.

Well, no one ever said the writing for them was good (and it definitely isn't most of the time), but it's more screentime than any one else gets.

Because it's all about plot, not character. Pissy's got it in her head that "drama" means "outrageous". Every bleepin' story has to be more outrageous than the next. Ergo...Paul keeps the baby switch quiet, and pays for it by being shot. Then he makes it look like a suicide, because he "deserved it" for breaking Em's heart. Then he has to sleep with Em to "save" Dusty for Jen. Em conceives, and decides to crush his balls for leaving her. They end up losing the baby, after the summer from hell (endless baby scares, and declarations of intending to sue for custody).

Hogan was kind of the same way, substituting volume of story for quality of story.

Hi Everyone,

This is my first post!!!

1. Give Will a life outside of Gwen. Those two work well together but Gwen has outgrown Will and he pretty much is her bestest cheerleader, not her husband.

2. Ditto for Jade, allow her to be "Jade" but outside Willen. Jade is actually a lot more interesting than the other teens.

3. Give Henry a storyline and love interest... that loves him back!

4. Give RH/Paul a long vacation. Apparently, he has checked out and needs a break. I have liked the character of Paul since the late 80's, but now the character is boring and pitiful.

5. It's a pity that the actress that plays Meg is a Synder. She has great chemistry with both Holden and Jack.

6. Show Luke more than four times a month.

7. Find something "real" to do with Carly... she is too old to be back at square one, every other year. It's not cute anymore.

8. Katie, Katie, Katie---Give the woman a job and let her be by herself for a minute.

9. Stop bringing Simon back, unless PL is willing to stay at least two years. If not, end Skatie for good.

10. PLEASE never put Dallas and Jade together. Dallas is a sweet character that serves absolutely no purpose.

11. Let GM/Dusty find his next female co-star. Someone that he actually has sexual chemistry with that isn't a weak, over-priviledged whiny type. I had enough with Justy and Lusty I & II. Heck, maybe Jade and Dusty should hook up...at least they could scheme together and I bet they would have some serious sexual chemistry.

12. Bring back Jessica.....Let Margo have a real storyline.
