This idea came to mind after I was over on soapcentral.com on the Guiding Light section reading about the time Roger Thorpe was in a clown outfit chasing around a pregnant Rita Stapleton at a carnival through a hall of mirrors.Even though Rita didn't appear to be a total saint she did think about the life of her unborn child which was later stillborn as a result of Rita being kidnapped by Roger Thorpe.This was a time when Roger Thorpe was in his prime as a dastardly villain.I remember in the description of these scenes that a disco song by Donna Summer and Barbra Streisand called "No More Tears" playing in the hall of mirrors scenes.This happened back in early 1980.I was 5 years old at the time this storyline was playing and yet I can remember those hall of mirrors.Thankfully I didn't have nightmares about them because I can imagine Rita as fearing for herself and her unborn child with Roger coming at her with a gun.Sonny Corinthos on GH is no villain compared to Roger Thorpe on GL.I thought this one of the most chilling moments in soap history.Now this was when soap operas were consistently well written.I looked up the credits on Internet Movie Database and Douglas Marland was the headwriter for sure at the time this story was playing.Way to go Doug.Even though Marland did a wonderful job for ATWT,one can only wonder if Guiding Light would be a true masterpiece if he was still alive and stayed with GL today.They don't make that many good headwriters anymore.What great soap opera moments.

Soaps scariest moments? Well, I've only been watching DAYS for 3 years now, but I have to say that when Maggie was 'murdered,' that was was really scary. The way JER set it up was great.

I'm actually saying something positive about JER. LOL

In my span of watching, off the top of my head:

----Stefano's first run, in the 80s, there were times where the character was downright frightening. Joe Mascolo has always had that quality about him, but perhaps the production at the time just added to his already intimidating demeanor.

----Eden's rape on Santa Barbara was so graphic in nature, I found it to be quite frightening.

----Similarly, the vulgarity of Frankie's death on Another World was painfully scary to watch. Making it harder was how loved Frankie and Alice Barrett were.

----There was something so eerily creepy about Carly being buried alive that the scenes just gave you goosebumps when watching. Crystal Chappell was a tour de force (and a real sport) performing her heart out in a coffin.

----Sheila of Y&R (and to a lesser extent B& could induce chills any day of the week.

Yes, Roger chasing Rita was a masterful sequence (which would win Guiding Light its first Drama Series Emmy). The best part is when the song ends and everything gets dead quiet. Rita begins looking around. She begins to think that she is safe, then sees Roger in one of the mirrors and screams as Roger runs up to her.

Speaking of screams, another great moment is when Roger is unmasked at Phillip and Blake's wedding. Ed pulls off Roger's mask and Holly lets out a truly horrifying, blood-curling scream.

Matt Clark (Rick Hearst) has been in a car accident and is in the hospital. Nick comes in the room and Matt pulls out his breathing tube and puts it in Nick's hands. Then he says "Hey Rich Boy, I win," then dies.

IA Dan, that was a great clever twist.

For the most part the DAYS SSK storyline was pretty damn freaky in all its campiness.

ANYTHING having to do with Orlena Grimaldi on ATWT.

That...and the whole spa storyline where they showed that woman that had been helping them..and when the doctor got to her...*shivers* That still gives me the shudders!

Scariest/Saddest/Sickest Moment in daytime history -

Lightening flashes, the powers out, psycho Marlena breaks into Alice's house to murder her. The two play a game of cat and mouse, while poor Alice begs for her life. She then hides in the closet. Marlena is looking all around saying "olly olly oxen free" "Where are you old woman" them swings open the door as Alice stands there scared out of her mind. Sits her down at the table and proceeds to suffocate her by stuffing doghnuts down her throat (offscreen thank God)

HM: Maggie is beaten senseless with a whiskey bottle while screaming and begging for her life.

Sunset Beach:

Everyone is running around the island looking for the killer, but he is chasing Meg through that huge house that she is all alone in. She finally hides in a bedroom. The killer starts trying to get in, but then he leaves. Meg finally relaxes and lays her head on the door. She turns it and the killers hook pierces the door, inches away from her head. Meg lets out a blood curdling scream.

Loving:

The finale of the serial killer storyline. Gwyn was such a fallen woman. It was terrifying that she thought she was helping her family by killing them (including her beloved son and ex-husband). When she finally realized what she had done, she had Steffi inject her with the hypodermic needle.

Michael

Frankie's death on AW was more disturbing than it was scary. I remember being kicked out of the room when that happened b/c I was only 6 or 7 at the time. I can't imagine something that awful, considering that that's what most people consider to be the death of AW.

I was only a kid when it happened, so it may not of happened the way I remember it, but Eden tied up in the Shark tank on Santa Barbara scared the heck out of me.

Another HM is to Horton the Tiger. He went after Tony when all that blood dropped on him... Pretty gross and cool and scary at the same time.
