I do not get Soap Net where i live but i do have some friends who do get it and lately they have been asking why Soap Net does not have more classic daytime soap operas airing? Do any of you know why they do not air more classic daytime soap operas?

Speculation on my part...they're not a big ratings draw. They start out with all this fanfare from SoapNet and then end up practically dumped in the garbage. AW started out with multiple showings, now it's on once and in the afternoon, no less, opposite the current soaps airing on the regular networks. Ryan's Hope I was able to start watching when they started it from the beginning again and at that time it had three showings an hour each (2 episodes shown three times)...now it's on once at about 5:00 in the morning, and only one episode. Meanwhile, the network is loaded with current soaps getting aired repeatedly (2-3 times a week, counting marathons) and 80s nighttime dramas, most of the latter being available on DVD, no less. Recently SN began airing same-day showings of DAYS and Y&R which, of course, further diminished the time available for classic soaps. I suspect when they take the cancelled SoapTalk off, those slots will end up getting used by same-day reruns or nighttime dramas. I get the feeling TPTB don't think history and nostalgia are hip unless you're talking about Reagan-era millionaires and twenty-something West Coast himbos and bimbos.

I have read that some AW eppies have brought in the same amount of viewers as same day eppies of AMC.

Classic soaps are still pretty costy with music rights and some stuff simply doesn't exist anymore, which is a true shame. "Ryan's Hope" started with 2 episodes a day, 3 times a day, and two weekend marathons before it was wittled down to its current. "Another World" got a weekend marathon several months in only to have it taken away less than a year later. "Another World" and "Ryan's Hope" both do better now that they are only shown once a day supposedly.

To think, if SoapNet was still airing 2 episodes a day and hadn't back tracked Ryan's Hope would be close to a completed run by now.

I heard that AW has a lot of stuff missing from the eighties. That is why Soapnet started airing AW with July of 1987,

I really wish Soapnet would start to air two eppie's of AW back to back a day. It is going to take an eternity to get to stuff I want to see. That is unless people start posting their AW clips online or the P&G channel at AOL mixies it up a little and shows eppies ahead of where Soapnet is at.

I think they just started in July of 87 because it was a good starting part. the PGP soap channel is playing consecutive episodes from 1980. I'm sure they have a good enough run from there, but 87 was a better starting point with Anne Heche and heading into the 90s.

The reason they don't have more daytime soaps is simply because of cost. SOAPnet is stil a small network and can't buy a bunch of shows at once like most networks will do.

BTW, it's nothing person that AW lost it's multiple showings. Pretty much every show on SOAPnet starts with them and then loses them to make room for new shows.

Yeah. I don't keep track of SOAPnet like I used to (still want it tho), but didn't DAYS lose some airings? And aren't KL and "Dynasty" off the schedule completely now?

DAYS has always had two airings since the 2004 acqusition.

As much as I would LOVE to have more classic soaps on SOAPnet, I'm just happy there is a channel devoted to them to begin with. I live, eat, and breathe soap, so I'm glad there is a channel that exists for it.

SOAPnet is to every obsessed soap fan what ESPN is to sports nuts. No matter what's on, you have to watch. Even if, God forbid, PASSIONS were on SOAPnet, I'd watch it when I was bored too.

And P.S.: I remember being so [!@#$%^&*] mad when DALLAS took one of AW's airings. The Midnight/11PM Central timeslot was just so perfect for me. With B&B airing opposite the show, I never had time to watch it anymore. And the weekend marathon was awesome also. GRRR!

One of the only thing that bothered me is that DFN(may it SO not RIP) wasted space that could have been used for classic marathons. I'd rather see a DFN for AMC, OLTL, and GH than DYNASTY, KL, FC, or DALLAS.

I thought DFN was a great thing, IMO. None of the primetime soaps got weekend marathons by the time it came up, so it's not like they were being shown in DFN in addition to a marathon.

I honestly do not get why so many people are upset about the primetime soaps. These are shows that saw the height of their rerun popularity in the mid-1990s and for most of the late 90s and early 2000s they were nowhere (except for KL, which of course, debut on SOAPnet in 2000). And I know there's the whole DVD thing, but "Dynasty" isn't getting anymore seasons released anytime soon and "Falcon Crest" hasn't even been rumored to be released at all yet, I don't think. "Dallas" is getting steady flow, but still, a colossal hit like it deserves to be somewhere on cable regardless of DVDs.

I see no reason why there can't be a reasonable balance of daytime and primetime programming on SOAPnet.

The problem with a DFN for daytime is the same that we have with ATWT and GL on PGP's new classic channel. You must get permission from everyone involved in the episodes for a soap thats still on air so it would be too much of a hassle.

THe head of the official ATWT forum said that when ABC was doing A Daytime To Remember, they couldn't show a key episode because a very famous ABC actress refused to let them. Don't know who, but you can see how they wouldn't wan tot be bothered.

I wish they had more airings of AW and that they would cut down on the BH 90210 and MP airings.......

We only got SoapNet in May, and I was really getting into Dynasty and then they took it off. I'm really going to miss Soap Talk too, and hope that they may think about doing a Soap oriented talk show once a week.....

What's a DFN?

It would be nice if a new network would start that was devoted to Older Nighttime Drama's. It would probably be to expensive though.

It was so stupid to have 90210 air back to back episodes every day after the show had already aired one cycle of the whole series. Though I have to wonder if 90210 will disappear after this second cycle is over. It better go back to only one airing a day at least. It would make more sense to play two eppies of aw a day and speed things up a bit.
