GENERAL HOSPITAL February 2023 Discussion Thread
That reminds me that I had no idea that Gia or Taggert (I figured the actor was at least part black but no clue about the character) were supposed to be black until their mother showed up. Marisa Ramirez, despite those braids, was decidedly not black. She's been on Blue Bloods for a decade btw @Vee. I know.

@janea4old I would never advocate for anyone to shut up about rape, my apologies if it came across that. I was simply talking from a cultural/publication standpoint. I don't even know how you would release anything related to GH without dedicating a substantial section to Luke and Laura. They could contextualize it, they could lambast it (as they should) but that would still result in their story getting a good amount of coverage. To the majority of people even aware of General Hospital, they are General Hospital. I don't even need to see Karla Mosley on daytime again. Napiera Groves, sure why not.

Watching a lot of San Cristobel clips lately and MAN, this is bad soap. Laughably bad. Everything is arche and nonsensical and not in a fun way like Days in the 90s, it screams desperation. Characters squeezed into situations that don't read as authentic for any of them. I started watching just before story kicked off (and didn't stick with it at the time), I can't even imagine being a long time fan and having to suffer through this. And listen, no hate to Kim Zimmer but she sticks out like a sore thumb in this story. It's like "whose mom is this?" every time she pops up in a scene. The amount of money they invested into this stupidity is astounding. The set they built for Richard and Cassie's wedding was enormous (I don't even know how they found that much room in NY) and hideous. It's crazy to think even the lowest rated soaps could still afford this sort of opulence. Actually what were the ratings like during this period? I wonder how many rubberneckers they attracted.

Well-deserved. He went toe to toe with Maura, which is not easy to do. Actually the other day I said I didn't want him as Nik permanently but fück it. He's great. And he's not as pretty as Tyler (who is??) but he's a good actor in a role that with all of these plot machinations needs a good actor to sell it. RoboCop (Jordan) decided to use her face today. I counted at least 3 facial expressions! We're rooting for you, mama! I was hoping that Portia would confess to what she thought was an empty hallway but actually Trina on the other side of that door. Come on! Let's get this show on the road! Outside of Sam and Dante I enjoyed today, I don't mind a day of cast interactions and I'm just relishing in that many series regulars all in the same room together. GH is the only soap that does does it remotely well anymore.

YR actress returns
Every time an actor from this show promotes it on social media they look like they’re being held for ransom.

Parts of it are repeated at the end of the paragraph and a third of it didn't even happen. Weird stuff.

What are you even talking about? I've never seen someone so consistently loud and wrong on this board. It was absolutely a popularity contest. It's got a giant photo of Luke and Laura in their wedding attire from 40 years ago, Rebecca Herbst who has a loud and ardent fanbase that has saved her job at least twice, Sonny and Brenda a hugely popular pairing (and the last time show lead Sonny was interesting) and Spencer and Trina's fanbase is the first one I've seen in YEARS this enthused about a pairing, they hired a frickin' plane to fly over GH's studio. If you don't think ABC opened up their entire photo repository to People for this tribute issue you have no clue how any of this works and should just stop.

Holy shît, Spencer and Trina made the cover! THEY'RE NOT EVEN A REAL COUPLE (YET). It's really effin' WILD that out of all of the extremely popular couples/supercouples that GH has had (and they have had numerous) that they made the cover. This is great but I swear if I have to file for social security before they kiss. I will lose my mind, take the first flight to LA, find Frank Whatthefuckareyoudoingtini and smack him. I honestly think we all collectively manifested the characters featured on that cover lmao. Luke & Laura, Spencer and Trina and a GIANT picture of Rebecca Herbst all by herself. Well fücking deserved. If the show isn't going to recognize at least SOMEONE did. Of course Sonny had to be squeezed in there and he was, using a picture from a time when he was actually interesting. And we got Brenda @carolineg!

Hold the goddamn phone. I was trying to figure out where I recognized the actor playing Portia's brother Zeke from and he's Gavin Houston (the gay brother from The Haves and The Have Nots), extremely attractive, good actor, I can't believe he's not a new contract actor, etc. ANYWAY, he is 45 years old. How?! I guess he and Brook Kerr just decided to stop aging at 28. God I love being black.

YR promo week of February 6th: Victor Plotting
Man oh man the acting is BAD in this promo. I usually think Bergman doesn't have a bad day but this is one of them and Mealor isn't even trying. The shot of Braeden never should have seen the light of day, he looks confused about where he is.

Existing Recasts that Another Actor Would Have Excelled In
I wasn't watch at the time but in the clips and episodes I've seen I enjoyed Brenda Epperson's portrayal of Ashley far more than I've ever enjoyed Eileen's. She's just so cold and it doesn't always feel intentional, it reads like "Why am I here?". Because on Days she's the opposite, she relishes in the most reductive non-sensical plot turns and dialogue.

It's a debate for the ages. For what it's worth the creator of the gif said it's pronounced "Jif". Source Monday's episode was good stuff (if you ignore everything involving Chase/Brook Lynn and Austin and his cousin). Genie is too damn good, her first scene with Spencer she was tempering barely concealed rage. The Laura deep inside her wanted to smack him so hard because she feels in her soul that she just said goodbye to her son. Honestly she elevates every scene she's in, and I will watch Laura do anything (now that Luke's gone this can be true all of the time for me). Adam Huss and Maura West were dynamite as well, especially with him stepping into the climax of this story. I actually don't think MC could have played those scenes as well, he just doesn't have a range. I assume he was upset that Nik is (apparently? allegedly?) being killed off. Get over yourself. I don't want Nik to die but PLEASE. Nik throwing Kiki's death in Ava's face and threatening to take Avery immediately got real dark real fast. And I completely understand why he went there, Ava has helped irreparably damaged his relationship with his adult son AND helped him (Spencer) to get custody of his unborn child. I'd be a little unhinged too.

You always want to put someone with a Black Man ™. Laura cussing people out is the highlight of any episode, because unlike when people like Sonny or Carly or even Alexis do it Laura is a fundamentally good person who CAN speak from morally superior place. It's gratifying to watch her put someone in their place. You guys are no fun.

I'd forgotten how many kids Cassie had. Tammy, one with Hart, one with Richard and didn't she and Edmund try to have a kid too? Calm down, woman. One of the first episodes I recall watching of GL had Phillip and Beth stuck on a mountain after a plane crash, was that in San Cristobel? Sounds about white.
