Character connections that were lost.
Thank you, friend. I grew up on Robin's Janet and only saw Kate's years later on youtube so I was pretty pissed at what they turned Janet into. Killing Trevor? Go to hell. I know you're gonna say something like "I never bought her redemption, she always had this in her" but the Janet I knew would NEVER. *plugs ears* That show pretends Dru didn't exist so this doesn't surprise me. Neil had an unnamed wife who died. Lily and Devon had an unnamed mother who died. Neil, also dead, gets mentioned often because they liked Kristoff. Even on other soaps where actors were fired for misconduct their characters still get mentioned. But Victoria Rowell wanted better working conditions and dared to say something while black? Let's act like Dru had no friends and that her children wouldn't miss her terribly and talk about her all of the time (Dru was the head of that household, Neil was a mealy-mouthed do boy). They can fück off.

Character connections that were lost.
It was, as a non-AW viewer I liked them a lot. Tom Eplin and Lesli Kay had amazing chemistry. I can't remember if he chose to leave or if they let him go. It's interesting when shifting timelines cause character connections to get lost. Since the actress who played/plays Emma on GH has been allowed to age in real time but the characters she was surrounded by were SORASed it's now this weird thing where people she was literally in a love triangle with at 8 years old are now 20 or 21 and she's only 16. You'll see an old clip of someone holding a baby and then 15 years later they're lovers. The way Sami's husband EJ, a man with whom she has 3 children, was born after her adult son.

GH: Classic Thread
Watching old clips and man, Emily was such a jerk to this whole family. They weren't perfect but I don't know if I as a regular viewer could handle this little urchin joining my show solely to talk shît about all of the characters I did like. The Quartermaines are loud and can be obnoxious and self-involved but the contrast the show tried to set up between them and literally mobsters never made a lick of sense. "Michael is being raised in a caring and loving home!" where he could be shot at at any moment? Also Monica and Alan raised Jason in that horrible Quartermaine household and he turned out to be kind and considerate. Emily was raised there from the age of 12 and turned out alright. Shît, outside of his drinking problem AJ was hardly a bad person. He only, from what I could see, went after people who hurt him. He wasn't like Carly, who intentionally ruined people's lives in service to her own self-interest. And man, Carly would not have survived as a character in the internet age we have now. Steve Hardy died shortly after she joined and show, she's in that episode and in it she laments to Jason that Steve dying is taking the focus off of some stupid accomplishment she had. She says something like "Could he have waited a day?". A day to DIE? To DIE, Carly? How about you die. How about that.

Underused/Misused Charachters
Misused: Drew Cain on GH. I only know a little about the character. For years everyone thought he was Jason. And he lived a life as Jason. And then he was presumed dead. But in Cameron Mathison he's come back as some sort of Ken doll Generic Man. Who is this guy? Because all I see is Cam.

Character connections that were lost.
Again off-topic I've love for someone to drum up a list of stars who transitioned to equal unquestionable success on a different soap. So not just "oh they went to a different show and stayed for years." but they were critically lauded and loved by fans. Like Cady McClain as Rosanna on ATWT. I didn't like how Erica and Janet's friendship was forgotten as the years went on. Was Erica involved at all when Janet came back all regressed and played by Kate Collins again?

Character connections that were lost.
This is off-topic but the idea of bringing on a star from the canceled show onto your show and making them a star on that show has always befuddled me. I know the idea is to possibly draw any audience from the canceled show but soaps have always made stars, it’s been rare that a soap star has been as successfully on another show as their most famous role yet this keeps happening. Back on topic, I’ve always hated that even though John raised Sami and Eric he was treated like an interloper. He was their father during their formative years. And I actually think that makes for a more interesting story. Torn between the love they have for the man who raised them and their biological father. Also Marlena was a defacto mother for Brady but as soon as he was aged up he hated her.

This low rated show acquiesced to the demands of an actress who wasn't even bringing in viewers. Insane.

She told Frank she wanted to leave a week before her Emmy. She didn't think a relationship with Austin would have worked and thought Cody and Britt were more like sibling. She didn't like her death scene (it was unclear what was happening, which is true). Wanted Britt to die of Huntington's. Basically she left because Steve left and she lost her chance to be a leading lady on the show. That's my takeaway.

I'm grateful I didn't have to watch Emme Rylan try to emote through all this nonsense! It's definitely a combination of the writing and Eden McCoy inability to play anything other than self-righteous. I'd love it if the show acknowledged that Joss got all of Carly's worst personality traits. She's vicious and narcissistic and barges into every scene like a bulldog. Of course this show had Joss defending what Carly did before even talking to her. It's funny that Roger Howarth and Michael Easton joined this show as Todd and John from OLTL, who despite how you might feel about either of them had distinct personalities. Then they became Franco and *checks notes* Silas, two also maybe interesting people idk they had stuff to do. Now they're both stuck playing two of the blandest, nondescript alleged romantic leads I've ever seen. I can't imagine a single person caring about Austin or Austin and Ava (please save her from this pairing). Or anyone looking forward to watching Hamilton Finn (this dumbass name I swear) pine after Elizabeth while they watch his lispy daughter (who the fück is this?). Frank, listen, I know you've known these men for 20+ years and they have families and mortgages but my god LET IT GO MAN. They are DONE. There is no more there there.

Wait a damn minute...Lulu didn't give birth to either of her children? I knew about Charlotte and that mess but the boy was carried by someone else too? That is...crazy. How could they tell such similar stories with the same character? Babies and doppelgangers is right. If Esme and Willow's babies are switched that will be, correct me if I'm wrong, 3 baby switches in 10 years? And the second involving the same character in Willow, right?

Joss and Dex can fall in love, etc. whatever, don't care. But I wish the show was willing to go the "Joss wanted to get FüCKED" route. Because Cam is sweet as pie, he's not blowing her back out. She wanted some D from the dangerous, older mafia enforcer. Play up that angle, it would give this some drive, some perspective.

They've always shown the consequences of his business but rarely past like 1997 what he actually does. He has territory that others want, everyone has a gun, you will explicitly hear what his enemies do wrong (Alcazar was an arms dealer for instance) but not what makes what he does illegal.

Sally Sussman Morina Interview
Yeah they understand that the audience loves her but they don't want to see her as a lead because she's not whatever they've deemed attractive enough. Instead we have Melissa Ordway, who no one would notice was missing if they replaced her with an eggshell colored piece of plywood in a blonde wig in the middle of a scene

Y&R January 2023 Discussion Thread
Low energy stories, writing, directing. Actors who only show up for a paycheck, which I don't hold against them. At the very least, even with bad non-sensical stories, the actors on GH or Days or hell, even B&B look like they're kind of having fun. Everyone on Y&R looks miserable.

Sally Sussman Morina Interview
Did her first episode start with a classic Abbott family breakfast? Even the directing was different that day I recall, it harkened back to when Y&R was the golden standard for atmosphere (not nearly as good obviously but someone was trying).
