(Jeffries gets to speak before McCarthy) Ha! Jeffries is Pelosi's replacement as Democrat leader, so he gets to speak first, and then turn the gavel over to McCarthy. Democrat Hakeem Jeffries is giving a formal speech on the House Floor at the podium. As the Minority Leader but wow, it sounds like a victory speech! Excellent speech! Really great speech! I had to go away from my computer for a while, and just returned. I see that the official tally was announced for the twelfth vote. I see that three people didn't vote (not two as originally assumed by the media.). McCarthy vote total corrected. They've started round THIRTEEN. Each round, different people from each party have risen to officially nominate the various Republican nominees for Speaker. I've looked up the political positions of the nominators and they're scary. It's all rather terrifying that these people are in government.

The ultra far-right "freedom" caucus wants to take away our freedoms. They agreed to vote for McCarthy if he puts them in key positions on committees and lets them set the agenda. This is not funny. This is the politics of hate.

According to the NY Times, a nominee could win the speakership with fewer than 218 votes by persuading lawmakers who do not want to support him/her ... choose instead vote "present" or to not vote at all. I thought it required 218 votes which is more than 50% of the seats. But apparently I was mistaken. The winner is whoever receives more than 50% of those who cast a vote for a person. ("Present" doesn't count as a vote for a person.) This is one reason why the Dems remain and keep voting.
