B&B: May 2025 Discussion Thread
They had a Liam/Hope montage today supposedly about all their times together but it was only Annika's Hope and no scenes from Kim Matula's Hope. I realize they probably didn't want to restage those scenes with Annika. But still it was weird to omit the Italian wedding. They could have thrown in a Puglia scenery pic without the actors.

The Ted/Kat scenes. Really dude? You saying that Nicole was needy during the miscarriages and you wanted to be with DanaLeslie because she was more lighthearted and less needy? Srsly? Trash. I mean, even if he changed after that and has been faithful since (if) ... still, it's *not* an excuse.

BTG: May 2025 Discussion Thread
I initially thought BTG was going for the Duprees being (somewhat) like the Kennedy family- wealthy and politically influential. And Martin's accident being like how Chappaquiddick (Link) caused Ted Kennedy to cancel his plans to run for president in the 1970s. (He ran in 1980 but didn't get the nomination). But now it seems to have more layers that that, so I have no idea.

I don't think some of Samantha's hairstyles have worked with the ponytails and bows making her look like an older adult wearing a 10-year-old hairstyle. Bows work on Kat much better for Kat's age and personal style. We've known since the start that Eva was a hairstylist before she began working for Nicole. I like that they brought that back, with Ted arranging for her to work at a high-end salon. Yesterday's scene with Martin bringing Eva over for pizza with his family, and then Eva doing hairstyles for Samantha worked (for me). I did think that the new hairstyle that Eva created for Samantha was less "little girl" and somehow even though more mature, it made the actress Najah look less aged. Can't quite explain it, but she looks better now.

BTG: May 2025 Discussion Thread
I thought it interesting that in the Claybon/Manning youtube with Michael Fairman, Brandon Claybon said Samantha and Tyrell were initially supposed to be 6 and 7, but aged up for technical reasons, first aged up to 10 or 11, and then finally to 16 and 17. (Not sure what "technical reasons" means but that's what he said.) Claybon didn't mention when this decision was made to change the ages of the children. No mention of when this happened during the process of casting/writing/preparation. Just speculating: I wonder if Najah Jackson and Jaden Lucas Miller were cast later than other recurring actors due to this change? - so maybe that's how they selected Ms. Jackson?

Love this from the AP article on BTG: For years, Veronica Redd played Mamie Johnson — Drucilla’s aunt — on “The Young and the Restless.” When she tuned into the premiere of “Beyond the Gates,” what she saw got her attention, but what she heard blew her away. “I was not prepared,” laughs Redd. It begins with a women driving a Mercedes-Benz through the gates of an exclusive country club. The Emotions’ “Best of My Love” is playing — something that told Redd the production value was top notch. Daytime isn’t usually Redd’s favorite genre even though she acknowledges “it’s paid the bills for many decades.” “Beyond the Gates,” though, has earned a spot in Redd’s TV time. “They got me hooked,” she says. -

The Tennis Thread
May 2025: New Pope, Leo XIV is chosen in Rome, while the Italian Open tennis tournament is happening in Rome. The headline is "Sinner meets the Pope" or "Pope meets Sinner". LOL, this is tennis player Jannik Sinner. He met with Pope Leo and gave him a tennis racket. Leo plays tennis himself and is a tennis fan. (He is also a Chicago Cubs baseball fan). https://apnews.com/article/pope-leo-jannik-sinner-tennis-italian-open-9305b5f2957ac15c7a405f836371ec1e The top-ranked tennis player visited the new pope on Wednesday, gave him a tennis racket and offered to play, during an off day for Sinner at the Italian Open. Leo, the first American pope, is an avid tennis player and fan and had said earlier this week that he would be up for a charity match when it was suggested by a journalist. But at the time, Leo joked “we can’t invite Sinner,” an apparent reference to the English meaning of Sinner’s last name. By Wednesday, all seemed forgotten. “It’s an honor,” Sinner said in Italian as he and his parents arrived in a reception room of the Vatican’s auditorium. Holding one of his rackets and giving Leo another and a ball, the three-time Grand Slam champion suggested a quick volley. But the pope looked around at the antiques and said, “Better not.” Leo, a 69-year-old from Chicago, then appeared to joke about his white cassock and its appropriateness for Wimbledon, perhaps a reference to the All England Club’s all-white clothing rule.

Quote from the May 14, 2025 AP article on BTG: https://apnews.com/article/beyond-gates-renewal-d7369f7a60a0a992483294acb950ef6d Charlene Polite Corley, Nielsen’s vice president of diverse insights and partnerships, says 52% of the total audience is Black. “It’s bringing folks along for this really unique story being told in a lot of ways for the first time. And so, yes, the Black audience is leading here, but there’s a whole lot of other kinds of folks who are tuning in, too,” she said.

DAYS: Behind the Scenes, Articles/Photos
The only way I saw successful playlists for DAYS uploaded to youtube was maybe 10 years ago .... The uploader had code names for each playlist by obscure nicknames for each character, without mentioning DAYS or the actual character names in the description. You'd have to be an expert on the show's history to know the obscure nicknames for each character - something mentioned in the show's dialogue once years before. Importantly, commenters were asked to not mention the name of the show or the characters or the actors in their comments, or their comments would be deleted, which meant that the channel owners had to check it daily to delete such comments. AND the videos were all unlisted, so you'd know about it only from word-of-mouth, but were asked not to post about it anywhere. This was many years ago and I enjoyed watching those as they were up for several months. However some unaffiliated fools would create their own playlists on their own personal youtubes, linking to the unlisted videos and labeling their personal playlists with real show name and character names... so of course Sony caught it eventually and it was all lost.

Yes! Thank you @Liberty City for this pic of Mr. Robinson! Nice! I see him on the paramount PR page https://www.paramountpressexpress.com/cbs-entertainment/shows/beyond-the-gates/talent/ Looks like the page is laid out with the core four (Tunie/Davis/Duplaix/Mosley) first... followed by the rest of the contract actors alphabetically. Maurice Johnson is no longer there, and Keith D. Robinson is at the end alphabetically.

Thank you to dragonflies for finding this article! Victoria Rowell says she was asked to audition for Anita Dupree ‘Beyond the Gates’ is renewed as veteran Black soap actors cheer its success https://apnews.com/article/beyond-gates-renewal-d7369f7a60a0a992483294acb950ef6d And more about the article: Discussion of Black representation and history on soaps. Colorism. Fan engagement. Quotes from Victoria Rowell, Darnell Williams, Veronica Redd, some professors, and some viewers. (And a quote from George Cheeks from last year). Ms. Rowell is interviewed and talks about her history on Y&R and how a character can inspire viewers. Regarding BTG After “Beyond the Gates” was announced, Rowell says she received a letter from CBS acknowledging her place in the show’s DNA. “I have been contacted with great respect from the powers that be at CBS, thanking me for all of my hard work, recognizing the work that I have done that has influenced this moment and I appreciate that,” she said. She was “astounded” to be asked to audition for the matriarch role of Anita Dupree, but says she didn’t hear back after submitting her tape. The role went to Tamara Tunie, whom Rowell describes as “a brilliant actress.” CBS did not respond to a request for comment. Great article, worth reading in full The same Associated Press author Alicia Rancilio did some nice in-depth interviews for the GH 60th anniversary in 2023. Typed articles on the AP website and also video interviews on AP youtube.
