ALL: They Almost Became
Did Eileen specify a year? I know I initially asked thought of 1991 (when Jenny, Dominique and Julia would have been available), but GH could also have wanted Eileen in December 1988 for Katherine Delafield.

News & Gossip from the mid-1980s per The Soaps of Yesterday
@j swift, I'd like to take you for a rousing evening at the Cock-N-Bull Steakhouse and Lounge ... Boy, they still are pushing Brad Maule (still supposedly on his way out) something fierce. He had the beautiful voice and the power to hush up the audience and backstage talent at the Heart Fund benefit. How odd that only Kin Shriner (now single!) is the only one to have his costume mentioned. I'm glad to know Grant Show was having bicoastal fun, with a girl in California and closer to work/home in NYC, Tasia Valenza. Time to put on our thinking caps: which "flaccid and colorless" DAYS actresses could Jon-Michael Reed be referring to? I almost thought Reed was going for the big guns, Deidre Hall and Gloria Loring, since they're mentioned right after the choice line, but I'm betting he was maybe thinking of younger castmembers. George Reinholt "wouldn't mind doing another soap." I wonder if any of the remaining New York shows -- ATWT, GL, RH, LOV, AMC, SFT -- ever considered him or took an attitude of life's too short for that kind of drama. Casting that went the distance: Tom Elpin, incoming as Jake on AW. TIL that Pam Blair and Martin Short were (are?) friends. I wonder if they knew each other from theater circles BITD? And, sadly, daytime's first (?) AIDS death. RIP Dennis Parker.

It's funny you mentioned this, @JarrodFiresofLove, because prior to the interruption of "new" episodes, I had been thinking about how many more preemptions THE DOCTORS would have from 1980-82. I'm amused that NBC seemed to stagger its holiday preemptions in the '80s. They alternated if new episodes aired on Thanksgiving*, always aired on Christmas** and always took New Year's Day or therabouts off. *Annual Thanksgiving preemptions of DAYS were common in the '90s. **In later years, SANTA BARBARA would take both Thanksgiving (1988-1992) and Christmas (1990-1992) off in addition to New Year's Day.

It varied. Some preemptions were daylong, others affected only the later two soaps (and sometimes only SB). According to Jason47's site, these were the times DOOL was preempted when SEARCH was on NBC. Thu. 11/24/83 NFL FOOTBALL: PITTSBURGH VS. DETROIT (Thanksgiving) Mon. 1/2/84 TOURNAMENT OF ROSES PARADE & FIESTA BOWL: OHIO ST. VS. PITTSBURGH (New Year's) Tue. 8/21/84 GERALDINE FERRARO PRESS CONFERENCE ABOUT FINANCES Tue. 1/1/85 TOURNAMENT OF ROSES PARADE & FIESTA BOWL: MIAMI VS. NEBRASKA (New Year's) Tue. 1/28/86 CHALLENGER SPACE SHUTTLE EXPLOSION Fri. 7/4/86 WIMBLEDON TENNIS SEMIFINALS The Another World Homepage doesn't have listings for every day, but using the site/Google News, and cross-referencing with the DAYS and SANTA BARBARA sites, I confirmed preemptions for: Thursday, Nov. 24, 1983 (Thanksgiving) Monday, Jan. 2, 1984 (New Year's) (The Ferraro conference on Tuesday, Aug. 21, 1984 reportedly lasted between 1-2 hours. I'm unsure if it began at 12 or 1 p.m.) Monday, Jan. 1, 1985 (New Year's) Monday, Jan. 21, 1985 (Reagan) Thursday, July 4, 1985 (Wimbledon) Friday, July 5, 1985 (Wimbledon) Thursday, Nov. 28, 1985 (Thanksgiving) Wednesday, Jan. 1, 1986 (New Year's) Tuesday, Jan. 28, 1986 (Challenger) Thursday, July 3, 1986 (for Wimbledon) Friday, July 4, 1986 (Wimbledon) (Possibly Monday, Dec. 8, for Iran Contra Hearings) According to the SANTA BARBARA site, there were preemptions: Thursday, Nov. 22, 1984 (Thanksgiving) Tuesday, Jan. 1, 1985 (New Year's) Monday, Jan. 21, 1985 (Reagan) Thursday, July 4, 1985 (Wimbledon) Friday, July 5, 1985 (Wimbledon) Wednesday, Oct. 9, 1985 (Baseball playoffs) Monday, Oct. 14, 1985 (Baseball playoffs) Wednesday, Oct. 16, 1985 (Baseball playoffs) Thursday, Nov. 28, 1985 (Thanksgiving) Wednesday, Jan. 1, 1986 (New Year's) Tuesday, Jan. 28, 1986 (Challenger) Thursday, July 3, 1986 (Wimbledon) Friday, July 4, 1986 (Wimbledon) Thursday, July 17, 1986 (Daytime Emmys) Thursday, Nov. 27, 1986 (Thanksgiving) Monday, Dec. 8, 1986 (Iran Contra Hearings) Looking at all these dates, I see SEARCH had scheduled/likely preemptions on Thursday, Nov. 24, 1983 (Thanksgiving) Monday, Jan. 2, 1984 (New Year's) (Possibly on Tuesday, Aug. 21, 1984) Tuesday, Jan. 1, 1985 (New Year's) Monday, Jan. 21, 1985 (Reagan) Thursday, Nov. 28, 1985 (Thanksgiving) Wednesday, Jan. 1, 1986 (New Year's) Tuesday, Jan. 28, 1986 (Challenger) (Possibly on Friday, July 4, 1986) Of Note: Only ABC aired soaps on Thanksgiving 1983, "New Year's" 1984, New Year's 1985, Thanksgiving 1985 and New Year's 1986.

Quick rundown of what happened to Anderson Manufacturing, courtesy of Tune in Tomorrow (and @JAS0N47's site): April 1982: Linda told Alex she wouldn't let the DiMeras get Melissa's share of Anderson Manufacturing. Phyllis considered selling her share of Anderson Manufacturing to Stefano. May 1982: Stefano bought Phyllis' half of Anderson Manufacturing. June 1982: Mickey introduced Melissa to Tony, her Anderson Mfg. partner. To keep tabs on Melissa's interests, Chris took a plant manager job at Anderson Mfg. October 1983: Alex bought up Anderson Manufacturing stock. With help from lady executive Kate, Alex tricked Tony into selling Anderson Manufacturing. May 1984: Max made an offer to buy Alex's shares of Anderson Mfg. December 1984: Linda and Alex paid Speed's father, Paul, who blew up Anderson Manufacturing. March 1985: Under the threat of arrest, Alex stopped an insurance claim he had made after Anderson Manufacturing burned down. April 1985: Alex hired Speed, who had tried to blackmail Linda over the torching of Anderson Manufacturing. As for Alex, July 1987: Anjelica tricked Alex into investing in a bad real estate deal that later caused him to lose everything he owns. Alex was sent off to jail after he set his hotel on fire in hopes of collecting the insurance money. Talking about Chris becoming a lawyer reminds me of the supposed Calliope line, "Chris is a great lawyer. We've never seen him in court, but he's great." June 1985: Ivy's skeptical that Pete's share of Chris' new disco, Jump, is going to make Pete rich. December 1985: Chris sold Shenanigans to Pete and Tod, who's out of jail. May 1986: Chris passed his bar exams. January 1987: Chris is intrigued by lady district attorney, Leslie Landman. March 1987: Leslie and Chris talked about becoming partners in a law firm. Sorry for the info. dump, but hopefully that answered a few questions.

Illustrated Soap Ads - the good, the bad, and the oddities
Oh, what fun! 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. 9. Boy, that does look a lot like Susan Sullivan, but ... 10. Yes, it's exposition-heavy, but I have a soft spot for this premiere ad for B&B. I wish I could find ads from DOOL's "Gutsy. Glamorous." response campaign. And whoops, sorry, @j swift, I realized I didn't choose an illustrated ad.

That's the same conclusion I reached today. I also ended up rereading the summaries of the Herbert saga from October-December 1987. Turns out the story was at least partially about Edward's pride. He/Alan and Herbert/Quentin (with help from Sean) had a bet where whomever could turn $50 million into $1 billion first was the undisputed financial leader of the Qs and won it all. Frankly, if anyone was willing to gamble their money like that, they deserved whatever they'd get. As for the story itself, it meandered all over the place, ended with little consequences (Autumn ended up giving Alan and Quentin $50 million each) and is really most notable for introducing Cheryl (who was Herbert's broker). Finally, Herbert is Edward's cousin and Celia's grandfather. This means that Jimmy Lee would be ... Your grandfather's cousin's son is your Father's or Mother's second cousin. Out of of courtesy, deference, good manners & politeness you'd refer to your parent's cousin as your Uncle, - being of the same generation as your parents, but technically he'd be your second cousin once removed, which means 1 generation apart.

News & Gossip from the mid-1980s per The Soaps of Yesterday
Now that I'm caught up: -- Don't worry, readers, Jon-Michael Reed assures you that Matthew Cowles and Christine Baranski (oddly enough, not identified by their actual names) aren't really white trash! "Billy Clyde and Jewell" join Peter Bergman's wife-to-be, only identified as a non-actress and not Christine Ebersole. -- I know actors are different than the roles they play, but am I the only one who's a little squicked out that Genie Francis was dating John Martinuzzi, who played Laura's "sadistic rapist husband" Stavros? That's doubly so, considering the baggage of Luke & Laura's rape to romance. Oh well, apparently Genie and John had a happy relationship, although I did smirk at the mention that she'd be filming North and South (where she'd reunite with Jonathan Frakes). -- Different Times: 'Veteran dancer Lola Falana storms the 'Capitol'" If that wasn't awkward enough, we have Colleen Zenk and Mark Pinter's "strictly professional" mutual admiration. -- As for Reed, don't worry: A. Martinez certainly won't be sliding out of view as SB enters 1985. And yes, Don Diamont didn't have much trouble finding another soap role. -- Speaking of musicals, oh, how I'd have loved to have been in the audience when the Hayes headlined Oliver! Fun fact: Jed Allan was in the original U.S. production. -- Quite the up and down career path for Christopher Holder. First he's dropped from Y&R, then he's cast in nearing-the-end EDGE, then he's cast on AW, but he sadly won't go the distance with that show. Of course, that's nothing compared to Terri VandenBosch's array of traumas: having a hospitalized fiancé, getting hit by a car, having $100 stole out of her purse while knocked out, getting hospitalized herself and then losing her job on ATWT. -- Interesting blooper from Robin Mattson (or possibly a misunderstanding Reed), who said playing Delia was her first East Coast gig. I guess even she wasn't that impressed by her work as Hope Bauer on GL. In that same column: how can John James and Ted McGinley be alumni of ABC's Talent Development Program if it started in July 1982? By that time, John was on Dynasty and Ted was on Happy Days. -- TIL Peter Fonda (!) was considered for DALLAS. I'm curious if it was for the role of Jack Ewing or somebody else. To be honest, of all the nighttime soaps, I feel like he'd be most at home on KNOTS LANDING. Poor Charlene Tilton, though, being rejected by KL. -- C.C. from Baton Rouge was sorta close. David Hartman never acted opposite Denise Alexander, but they were a couple. I was also amused by J.L. from Greensboro wanting to know if CAPITOL would expand to an hour. Evidently they don't read Reed and don't know he finds the show so dull. -- The hottest controversy of winter 1984-85: Was Jack Wagner fired from GH? Nearly fired? (He doesn't want to talk about it.) And who are these two "Jack-haters" who were bitter at having their popularity exceeded? -- All this and the return of the "What's Dorothy Lyman up to?" questions.

GH: Classic Thread
He was her first husband. There was a stipulation in Edward's father's will that the Quartermaine money could only go to legitimate heirs. I would think a good lawyer could find a loophole in that. "Fine, the $20 million from 1930 is off limits. But the $200 million since then is free and clear." I think I'm the only one who likes Lorena, or at least what she could have been. I dunno, I think it's nice that Monica had potential to have a close female in her life. Alas, that went to hell pretty quickly. (Jan. 13, 1983) Edward learns that Beatrice (Jimmy Lee's mother) was never using the money he was sending her every month. Beatrice sent Jimmy Lee (Eric) to stay with cousins in the mid west who actually raised the boy. Seems like the opportunity would have been there circa 1991, when Steve Bond left SANTA BARBARA. Think of the possibilities: (a) a more organic means for the class conflict stuff Gloria Monty wanted to try; (b) having Jimmy Lee and Tracy finally meet, which would have been worth the price of admission; (c) Jimmy Lee's adoptive son, Jonah, who could have slipped into Jason's role, or Jagger's. I could be wrong, but I get the impression Herbert was the true power behind the Qs. Seems like that could have been a good story for Edward. I always felt like Alexandria was a clear substitute for Tracy.

Curlyqgrl's summaries for 1983-84 may help you out, @j swift, but I'll try to answer some of these, too. https://www.angelfire.com/tv/curlyqgrl/gh/eps/gheps1983.htm https://www.angelfire.com/tv/curlyqgrl/gh/eps/gheps1984.html Did Celia first meet Putnam or Andrews? If I read it right, Celia and Putnam were a couple before the switch occurred, when Putnam was a med student. How long before the move to PC did Andrews take over Putnam's identity? 1976. He was apparently left for dead. (January 2, 1984) When Grant's Dr's tell him he was found years ago at the bottom of a cliff, which in turn led to his stay at the sanitarium, he collapses. (January 13, 1984) Grant P has lunch with an old med school student he has not seen in 8 years. Grant P learns how his easily his imposter took his place. He even excelled the real Grant in top honors at med school. He's even more taken aback when informed that Celia even married the imposter. Why did Putman return to PC? Revenge. (December 29, 1983) The strange man in the hospital says his name is “Grant Putnam”. Real Grant reads the newspaper with reports of fake Grant's spy drama and goes crazy, his memories flooding back of what he had lost. Given that Putnam was responsible for his brother's death as a teen, did Andrews know that Putnam was a maniac when he assumed his identity? I'm pretty sure nobody -- nobody alive, that is -- knew Grant Putnam had issues. Why was Andrews allowed to stay in PC after everyone found out he was a spy? Grant Andrews worked hard to redeem himself over the course of late 1983 through 1984. He fought to keep his medical license, put up with menial work (even with Jimmy Lee as his boss) and wasn't fully welcomed back to GH until after Putnam was defeated. Were they both really doctors? Yes Didn't Andrews have another name besides Grant? (Nov. 1, 1983) Almost from birth, Andre Chernin (Putnam) was trained by the DVX to be a mole in the USA. Though he never saw the real Grant Putnam, the phony Grant learned to duplicate his model's every move. Was it plastic surgery or did they both happen to look alike? (July 27, 1983) Celia mentions to Bunny about Grant's plastic surgery. Bunny is intrigued. The Grant he knows had no surgery done. Was Celia related to Alexandra Quartermaine? Celia's dad was Quentin, son of Edward's cousin Herbert. For some reason, I'm thinking Alexandra was another of Herbert's children?
