All the people (*coughs* GOP *coughs*) who gasped at Gov. Cuomo's statement, didn't gasp at all the atrocities committed on minors (many of whom were never even charged with a crime) at Riker's Island. Y'all can miss me with the fake outrage.

Thankfully, she left a treasure trove of classic soulful songs and performances. Life isn't easy and neither was Ms. Franklin. I heard that it was pancreatic cancer about two years ago, at least. It would appear that this was the undisclosed illness she was dealing with. Surely, that toughness (and yes, that saltiness!) helped sustain her and perform practically to the very end of her life. She was tough and I'm sure she fought to the bitter end. R.I.P. Queen.- The Politics Thread

Yeah, Kvitova had no chill last night, lol. I'd rather watch a match with some actual big swings and power hitting where players can produce actual 'kill shots' than a match with endlessly defensive hitting where the ball is in play for damn near 50 shots, where neither player seems capable of finishing a point (I'm looking at you, Simona). It was refreshing to see some "Big Babe Tennis" as Mary Carillo used to call it.- The Politics Thread
It makes a warped kind of sense when you realize that Connecticut is one of the most unequal states in the country and this inequality is steeped in many aspects, chief among them are racial lines. I have family ties to the Northeast and Connecticut is one of those states where I have familial connections. I have also worked in the state and have personally felt the sting of prejudice while there, if not overt racism. People like Jahana Hayes (and myself) are not supposed to be in positions of authority, or power or influence, so the thinking goes. Connecticut has had a number of white male politicians who were utterly corrupt (hence the nickname "Corrupticut" that was once the moniker of the state) who have each tried to exert and regain influence, some after stints in prison. The district that Hayes is running in leans left, as does much of the state. I don't remember Bernie's folks endorsing Stacey Abrams and despite all the hullabaloo, they didn't endorse Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez either. Hm, I'm noticing a pattern. Does anyone else?- The Politics Thread

From the episodes in 1982, I decided to look up the names of writing staff that were unfamiliar to me and came across a name-- Jean Rouverol. Doing a quick search I see that she died just last year at the age of 100. As an actress, she had just started her career as a screenwriter when she was blacklisted. She had quite an interesting biography. Has she been mentioned in any threads before? She wrote a book called Writing for the Soaps. I did a quick search on this site but her name didn't come up. Since she wrote a book on soaps, perhaps someone here has read it?- As The World Turns Discussion Thread
A few pages back we were talking about when Lisa and Barbara partnered for Fashions and when Barbara had Simply Barbara vs. Barbara Ryan Originals. I came across this episode from 1982 and Lisa answers the phone as 'Fashions Limited'. It looks like Dee and Ariel worked there. I'm not sure if Barbara was even involved in the boutique yet, she was too busy being involved in that convoluted story where she kept having visions of the man who would turn out to be Gunnar. She does look beautiful here though. Someone put a LOT of makeup on Ariel! EDT: Okay Barbara was involved, maybe she was partners with Lisa back then but she seems fairly removed from the day to day in this episode. You have to excuse me, I was only in the 2nd grade when this episode came out so, I only have vague memories of some of these characters.- The Politics Thread

I can't believe he has to explain this, not once but twice to the media. No wonder players don't want to attend these press conferences.- The Tennis Thread
I'm not into giving Halep any credit where the Romanians are concerned, as I don't believe she's earned it. She's stood on the sidelines while Nastase has insulted and denigrated other women on numerous occasions. The same goes for her relationship to Tiriac. In fact, when asked in press about issues of the values of equal pay for the women, she's demurred, signaling that she believes the men deserve more than the women. I'm surprised that anyone would think that Simona is vocal on anything. I've always seen her to be reluctant to do anything other than offer platitudes and only when pushed.- The Tennis Thread

We might not see either one of them in Cincinnati. Simona complained a lot about having to play so many matches at night and the toll it was taking and as you mentioned @Faulkner Sloane looked emotionally spent and even during the match, her footwork and her legs seemed somewhat dodgy toward the end.- The Politics Thread
Unsurprising.- Why are soap fans so averse to online streaming?
Yes!! It definitely was not a $$$ issue from what I've read. They sort of ran into a wall because I gather that the process was painstaking and they had such a small crew working on digitization. Also, it sure seemed as though PGP was never really going to do any heavy lifting where that process was concerned. Someday the technology may come along that could allow them to seamlessly scan and put some sort of replacement sound over the scenes containing popular music. I still think it's worth it to digitize as many episodes as possible until the technology catches up. Of course, they wouldn't be able to release/sell anything but when they have the means to do it, digitizing episodes would be one less step to have to deal with. SoapClassics had been streaming episodes on their own website, so we know it is possible.- Why are soap fans so averse to online streaming?
Yeah, that's why I mentioned the fact that SoapClassics put out curated selections, rather than trying to sell/stream episodes fully in some type of chronological order. I got the sense that it wasn't an expense issue but a permissions issue from PGP and also, possibly getting enough manpower to do the digital conversion of episodes given how tricky it was to navigate episodes with popular music. I can't really speak of what Sony/Y&R would do, they've got a different system but PGP seemed somewhat amenable where the SoapClassics sets/streaming was concerned, provided they didn't have to actually do anything. Then again, the daytime drama industry complicates everything, I mean everything! We were discussing this in the Holy Grail thread but it seems utterly bizarre that soap archives like scripts are so difficult to access when I could easily access scripts of I Love Lucy and The Dick Van Dyke show. What makes an old Guiding Light script so much more precious than an I Love Lucy script? It's crazy!- Why are soap fans so averse to online streaming?
Other than music rights (and plain old obstinate thinking), what are the other potential barriers to streaming classic soaps? AcornTV could present a model for a streaming site geared toward a niche audience. At this point, I'm not prepared to predict what could or couldn't work, not in the era where we now have VHS to DVD converters and 3-D printers. It's overwhelming if you only consider soap streaming by sheer volume but if there were curated episode sets, which get gradually built upon, similar to what SoapClassics was doing, the possibilities become a lot more manageable. At this point, I'm not so skeptical about classic soaps finding an audience as I am about soap production companies like PGP putting the time and effort into building a platform that people can believe in--one that's not going to fade away in a few months like anything else soap-related in the past.- Why are soap fans so averse to online streaming?
That is a very critical point that you raised. It cuts to the heart of why daytime dramas have been failing for the past 15+ years. The soaps still cling to the same old AF social mores, essentially taking teeny tiny baby steps forward only when pushed or desperate or when they're practically off the air. When they do write "groundbreaking" stories, it is couched in poor predictable, yet still timid storytelling. It's as if they want the stories to fail so that they can claim "Hey guys, well, we tried!"- Another Talk Show Coming in 2019
