Yeah, it’s the reason why the NYT can repeatedly reference Trump’s full page ad requesting reinstatement of the death penalty especially for some falsely accused teenagers in their newspaper, while essentially abdicating their responsibility for publishing (and accepting the money) for said ad.

2024 Summer Olympics
Indirectly related, as this athlete participated in the Olympic Games. There has been a very disturbing trend of gender based violence against athletes, particularly long distance runners in Kenya. This violent act involving an Ugandan runner based in Kenya who suffered severe burns after being set on fire. Back from Olympics, Uganda's Rebecca Cheptegei set on fire As much as we (myself included) criticize (with good reason) the content and tone of the NYT, I think they have a bit more detail and context to the story on why this case may be as about gender-based violence as it is about a land dispute. An Olympic Runner From Uganda Is Severely Burned in Gasoline Attack In either case, I don’t think this issue has gotten nearly enough attention.

Considering the issues with commercial real estate and vacancies in NYC, they are probably leasing the space at a good discount.

Very interesting to see those clips and partial episodes presented with Italian dubbing. None of those appear anywhere on YouTube to my knowledge. There were some scenes that showed what looked like the culmination of the competition between John and Lucinda for the hospital board seat. Interesting bit of background here that at the beginning of this storyline, Lily #1 played by Lucy Deakins was in the role (although she isn’t shown in these uploads) and by the end of the storyline, Martha Byrne (Lily #2) has taken over the role after Deakins departure to pursue movies roles. (There was a similar odd turnover of actors who portrayed Ambrose Bingham, with what seemed like a mid episode replacement of one for the other, until I realized that two partial episodes had been put back to back 😂) What looks like the moments before the culmination of the competition between John and Lucinda where a decision is made for the board seat, there was that very insightful portion of the scene where John and Lyla are canoodling in Rex Whitmore’s office before he arrives and Lucinda is seated and is forced to take in the image of Lyla and John’s embrace and she definitely does not like it! 😂 It’s really cool to look at that moment in reference to where John and Lucinda will be in another year and some months later. Despite that, we later see that evidence that this is a particularly turbulent period in John and Lyla’s relationship and the beginning of the end of their romantic relationship. Getting to hear the dubbing of Marisa Tomei’s character Marcy in Italian tickled me for some reason. I do think the dubbed voices at least they tried to match the timbre of the original actors’ voices. What was going on with the theme song chosen?? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Drowning_in_the_Sea_of_Love_(The_Adventures_song) The theme song chosen was fine but the fact that the iconic theme wasn’t chosen and then the dizzying super fast spinning of that globe was something else! And most of the actors used in the opening theme clips were no longer on the show at that point. I’m guessing they were three years behind in the Italian broadcasts because these clips and partial episodes are clearly from 1985 (Frannie and Kevin are a couple and Marie Kovacs is an active and alive character on the canvas) while, the theme song used is from 1988 but what really gave me a clue is the commercial with the trailer from a movie starring Roberto Benigni and Walter Matthau called The Little Devil. Craig and Sierra in the flower of their youth as their romance blossoms while Lucinda becomes more fixated on trying to lure Craig by baiting him with opportunities for advancement and higher salary, which Lyla objects to and she was right to, of course. Seeing those scenes with Heather and Tucker, which I don’t remember seeing…Heather got closer to marriage with Tucker than she got with Roy but what happened?? She clearly got cold feet in both instances. Since Heather and Tucker are in my AVI, inquiring minds want to know! In a parallel universe, I would like to believe that somehow that after Heather left Oakdale and landed in Chicago, she and Tucker reunited somehow and eventually got married and had some kids. Seeing Betsy show up for the wedding with a bag of things paying homage to wedding tradition and to comfort a clearly nervous Heather reminded me that while Lindsey Frost didn’t really display much romantic chemistry onscreen, she had great friendship chemistry with her onscreen friends (Heather, Sierra, Tucker, Craig).

The fact that most of us already knew that this was going to happen doesn’t make it any less satisfying. Yes, I also know that this will only mildly bite the Saudi and Qatari investors but still to watch the value of Jack’s shares tumble and so precipitously, well, it tickles me. Musk’s Twitter investors have lost billions in value

It’s a smart move to set a lot of story in the political world, I was just wondering if someone had been reading our discussions about the soap Capitol and how a number of us believed that there was a place for a revival or reboot based on the evergreen aspect of politics and its inherent soapiness. It’s fine if someone has been surveilling the thread because it’s a good idea and smart to snatch it.

Y&R: August 2024 Discussion Thread
I have often wondered why they couldn’t do this, just slip it in the conversation. Once you’ve seen a character push around their salad around the plate for five minutes, you’ve pretty much seen them all “eat”. It would change things up if two characters encounter each other, when one is doing a morning jog or power walk and the other is getting off their bicycle…something different to break up the monotony of the coffee clatch scenes. Put that Chancellor park to some actual use.

Which is why I am taking every poll that has been posted in this thread with a grain of salt. Otherwise, I don’t even pay much attention to polls. They are simply something that I scroll through to get to more meaningful information.

Does anybody think, there may have been someone who was thoughtfully reading our discussions about Capitol? Now that I really think about it, some of us have talked about the aspects of Capitol that would be timely for this day and age? I really hope that in the future MVJ might discuss what inspired her to include the political aspects to her show.

And we especially need a Democratic Congress in addition to Harris getting in the White House because the right-wingers in the SCOTUS are currently scuttling common sense proposals from the Biden/Harris administration like allowing undocumented spouses of U.S. citizens who are in good standing a pathway to citizenship and student loan debt forgiveness. SCOTUS is in effect, blocking millions of people from getting a chance for a fresh start in life and the only way around them is to vote these programs into laws that focus on reform. It’s a miracle that this even got through. The USDA Is Finally Paying Back Black Farmers. Some Say It’s Not Enough. A Bacchanalia of bizarreness gets a new cut in its return to the screen. ‘Caligula: The Ultimate Cut’ Review: The Emperor’s New Clothes Has anybody ever seen this movie? Admittedly, I haven’t. Only a trailer and some clips. I do wonder whether the television series I, Claudius that aired a few years before might have inspired the characterization of Caligula in some way. (Even though quality seems like night and day when comparing the two adaptations). The trailer seems like a way over the top version of what was presented in I Claudius but from the screenshot of McDowell draped over Mirren in the article, it just seems like some of the characterization of Caligula in the movie may have been their hardcore take on John Hurt’s decadent portrayal of the character.
