That’s what I think every time I see him in these episodes. Surely, actors like Burt Reynolds and then Tom Selleck must have been a large part of why the style of having a prominent mustache became so popular during the 1970s and 80s. Seems like his styling and personal was trying to draw on those influences.

When I mentioned this to my mom after seeing the headline on the news, she said “I smell a lawsuit”😂 Is there a waiver that athletes have to sign or can they really sue, I wonder?

It’s just my personal preference and opinion. I didn’t enjoy it. There are many series that others enjoy but I don’t. I understand it created jobs and I’m not knocking that, but strictly as an entertainment vehicle, I didn’t enjoy it and I guess I had little interest in trying to stick with it.

2024 Summer Olympics
Years ago, I was on Reddit for about a day because I had a question about a particular type of software that I once used. Someone answered my question. They were very helpful but I haven’t used Reddit since. It does come up in searches I do for news articles, as sometimes there are gift links for articles. But I spend all of 12 seconds there. Facebook, I’ve never been a member of. It’s funny how Facebook used to come up in searches for notable people but now it’s Instagram (another social media platform that I’m not on). Not to derail the Olympic thread but yeah, it can be rough out there in the SM space.

2024 Summer Olympics
When I was on Twitter (so glad to have left that hellscape behind), I had to report accounts repeatedly (only with a 50% success rate) for misgendering people, misogynistic and misogynoir, racists death threats and rape threats. Looking back on it now, I don’t know why I stayed as long as I did. I guess I thought that I could help root out the horrific behavior but I only made a very tiny ripple in a very big swamp of toxicity. It was a waste of my energy.

Oh geez, that sounds exhausting. You might have to cut your conversations short sometimes to preserve your mental health.

The Tennis Thread
Did the tournament officials ever deal with the unruly fan? Shapovalov really should have insisted that the tournament official or director come out and deal with the situation. I remember years ago, before it was called The Miami Open,(maybe it was still the Sony Open? I don’t remember) some drunk racist guy in the crowd kept harassing Serena Williams and calling her a “lazy Black” or something and she refused to keep playing until the guy was removed. The tournament supervisor radioed security, security arrived and the guy was removed. Serena went right back to the match. In that case, I think the tournament supervisor talked to Serena and there were one or two people in the crowd that pointed the guy out but it did take time for them to remove the guy because in tennis it seems to need to go through three chains of command before anyone can seemingly make a decision.

Newspapers have been getting worse and worse in their reporting standards and they need to figure out why their standards are so low. Are their too many trust fund babies or reporters who got their jobs through connections? At this point, I can’t even say that I am surprised but it’s somewhat sad to see these newspapers that, at one time aspired to a higher set of journalistic standards stoop so low. On another note, it’s odd to see the sports media act as if it was some huge upset that Julien Alfred won the gold medal in the women’s 100m when she has been performing at a consistently high level all season. Look at her results this season, it’s no surprise.

Apparently, Shapovalov has been defaulted in another match. This time for swearing at a spectator, according to a report I read.

Thomas Jolly the artist director also filed an anti harassment lawsuit of his own. To say that the viewers didn’t understand the Dionysian segment would appear to be an understatement. Even if people didn’t understand, there’s no cause to spew that level of vitriol. Just move on to the next segment. I will be honest, by the time that segment aired, I wasn’t really paying much attention. I thought maybe it was an elevated fashion runway with elements of haute couture mixed with voguing from drag culture. I never once thought it had anything to do with religious iconography and I once attended Catholic school. I briefly glimpsed the DJ but I mistakenly thought she was an opera singer (possibly a lingering stereotype that I admit not being proud of leaping to that conclusion). What might have mitigated some of the less vitriolic responses (unfortunately even explanation can’t erase hate) would have been if there had been a fact sheet that broadcasters could have used to explain what was occurring—for one the connection between Dionysius, wine, French culture, revelry and what viewers were seeing. Some people still wouldn’t like it but most at least would have understood that it wasn’t mocking Catholicism or religious inspired art and culture. In a previous post upthread, I mentioned that I thought it was a real mistake for NBC/Peacock to not do any relevant fact-based commentary. The commentators could have explained a lot of what was going on, not just the Dionysus segment but more information about the other nations and their athletes. Might have dispelled numerous misunderstandings. Again, sadly, it probably wouldn’t have eliminated all the hate this woman is getting.

ARTICLE: Soap Central Acquired By India-Based Absolute Sports For $1.4 Million, Founder Dan Kroll to Exit
It seems like a lifetime ago since I last ventured onto SOC site. It’s almost hard to believe that I once had an account there because I honestly can say that I any connection I had to that message board faded some time ago (I was more of an aficionado of the first Soap City site before Sony bought it and took over). Like others have said, I guess, the character and storyline archives are important (despite some discrepancies in facts listed in the descriptions) and hopefully those will be preserved, if not on that site, on another, at least.

I have heard some very disturbing and distasteful things about Rumble, so I don’t ever intend to venture onto that platform. I remember there were a few Black “creators” that were lured there with the promises of riches and better subscriber traction than they were getting on YouTube. A few announced that they were leaving for Rumble, expecting their subscribers to follow suit. They are back to YouTube now. A teenager-y Betsy. And another reference to Cricket as a bug, this time not in an affectionate way but delivered with more than a hint of derision.

And yet, they are still giving oxygen to those nutty conspiracists (right-wing as well as ultra leftists) who are trying to spread the rumor that somehow Biden timed the culmination of a years-long effort so that it would benefit Harris’ election prospects. How stupid can these people be?? Maybe it’s the fact that I am no longer on Twitter, but mercifully, I am no longer hearing a mumbling word out of the mouth of Susan Sarandon! Or any of her ilk. The most I get is an occasional “I will never forgive Clooney” Spout which I actually enjoy.

I like President Biden’s response to some journalist’s comments that TFG claimed he could have rescued the hostages without conceding anything. Biden: “Then he should have done it when he was president!” We know that many of the media, well-connected and wealthy people who have influence in the political realm are not embarrassed by their machinations over the last several months (years likely) but they really should be. Many in the media were sour because they couldn’t get gossip and intrigue the way they did with TFG, so they were bitter and reported every conceivable hint of vulnerability in the White House, while reporting on TFG as if he were some ‘80s action figure. You don’t need an action figure or action hero to be an effective Commander in Chief or president.

And I don’t even think as negatively of Given’s acting talent as others. She has shown skill (e.g. The Women Of Brewster Place) with good direction but she can’t elevate a poor script and poor direction.

Late stage ATWT gave me the notion that they brought back James just as much to mix things up with the newer characters as with Barbara, which is not a bad idea, if you know what you’re doing and how to write it but that’s not what I recall from what I saw on my screen. John absolutely should have been brought back, even for a brief time during a story arc- Larry and Anthony usually lit up scenes during which they played opposite each other, with even just a look.

LOL. The characterization and the writing were in competition for which was worse. But, let’s say, with decent writing and portrayal that actually paid attention to the original incarnation of Dusty Donovan…it could have been interesting to play that against latter day James Stenbeck. Stenbeck needed a genuine nemesis, someone (not named Barbara Ryan) who was a match for him.

Thanks for this @NothinButAttitudeand thanks @DRW50 for tagging me. I don’t remember ever having seen this episode, a rarity for me at this point! Call me sentimental but I am enjoying this sequence between Margo and Cricket (did anyone notice Margo called her “Bug”? It was affectionate which is quite different from when the character Christine Blair gets called “The Bug” by her arch nemesis on Y&R). We know how messy Margo could be but how messy are the other Montgomery children to make Margo look like the sibling that has her sh*t together?! The way Karen is styled here, for a minute I thought, wait…is this Beth from Guiding Light? is this a promo for GL? What a wild era for BG music on soaps. I can’t take these music cues seriously lol.
