This obituary by The New York Times offers a bit more detail on Michaela DePrince’s life, especially the last few years, which included a no doubt very painful rupture of her Achilles heel, the death of her adoptive father, a surprising move back to the U.S. (because it essentially involved taking a lower status role as 2nd soloist, leaving behind a first soloist position) due to her adoptive father’s illness. There seemed to have been the occurrence a lot of personal and emotional upheaval. It’s not clear if there is any connection to what seems to be her untimely death but it really seems to add to a life of triumph, pathos, perseverance and determination over tragedy. To people who don’t know who this young woman was or what made her so special, here are a few illustrations of why. The first video, she was only 13. She came through some pretty rough circumstances early in her life. To be called evil because you have vitiligo, to be made to feel ugly and to use all your strength and power and energy to persevere and (still do it with a smile on your face) to create such beauty is indescribable. We don’t yet know the circumstances of why/how this talented soul passed away but may she rest in peace. It’s sad that we won’t have more of her beautiful dancing.

Thanks @DRW50 for tagging me on this video. Watching a scene like this, it occurs to me that anyone who grew up on a steady diet of soaps exclusively from the past two decades might find that scene between Kim and Carol to be plodding but I like the pace of conversation and how realistic it sounds, the way an unscripted conversation might seem. You only need listen to what the characters are saying, how they relate to each other and soon you’ll be drawn in. Today’s soaps would only give this length of time to the characters if there were at least four in the room talking, likely about some bizarre scenario. Scenes in soaps today are barely two minutes unless they are intercutting with something else happening simultaneously,which is drawn straight from the movies. When Bob and Kim got married in ‘85, I remember scenes when Bob was packing boxes and trying to get Tom (and maybe Frannie too?) to come and get some of his cherished childhood items (I guess the implication was that Bob would donate and/or junk the rest). I also remember Craig Montgomery coming in as Bob was hauling out the rest of his belongings as he sold the place to Craig. I think Bob even handed the key to Craig and said something like “Welcome home” to Craig.

For years, I mostly stayed away because I happened to be on the subway and was going over the bridge, happened to look down and saw a huge gaping hole where the N and S towers used to be, and my heart sank into my stomach. I also thought the air quality was likely toxic and wanted to be nowhere near that area if I could possibly help it. I remember having to show up for jury duty selection and wanting to get in and out of the area, which admittedly was probably a safe enough distance away from the footprint. Perhaps when I finally make my way back to the footprint, I might stop considering it a graveyard.
