Y&R's Doug Davidson v. Nelson Branco?!!
It might not have been so bad if the industry had mix of good journalism right along beside the gossipy fare but there was never a good journalistic sector (and there were issues worthy of investigation and exploration), so the trash floated to the top and that flotsam was the only thing people could see. It's no wonder soaps ended up getting so little regard.

Susan Bedsow-Horgan should have long ago been on a livestream from one of these podcasts discussing her work on ATWT in depth. Wagner too. It's negligence that they haven't been included. I only got to see the last four, five minutes of the reunion and could tell immediately that it wouldn't be worth my time to go back and watch the whole thing. Sometime last year, I mentioned that I wished that someone like Roger Newcomb would host or produce (and choose a host) something like this because he has more experience interviewing soap talent and knows a lot more about these shows, as he used to run the We Love Soaps blog. Unfortunately soap fans have become used to very little, so will be praising Alan to the hilt for offering such mediocre content.

Oh. I wish someone would talk to Meredith Post and Maria Wagner. Wagner in particular, was a director-I could be mistaken but I don't remember seeing many women directors of daytime soaps in the 1980s. The job of a director just seemed far more integral back then since scenes had a lot more movement, not stasis of today's daytime soaps. Good direction really showed back then.

This morning, I saw a headline that said that former president Bill Clinton called for the suspension of the filibuster. I'll have to watch the rest to see the specifics if what he's saying, but more people are beginning to see the filibuster as a definite obstacle to the Biden agenda. In other election news, I don't know why people are so shocked by India Walton's win in Buffalo. It's similar to AOC's victory over a multiple times incumbent. Buffalo is even worse in how economic progress for people has stalled for many years. It's not inconceivable that people would actually want a change when they have been languishing for decades. It looks as if the losing incumbent might try to pull a Joe Lieberman-type maneuver in the general election.

This sounds sad. I have heard of the Independent Spirit Awards but not this. Thankfully. How many years did this go on, 😂?

Martin Guest killed the broker of the illegal adoption that got Lily. Oh my goodness, Clifford Breyer was his name. I admit, I had to find the episode where his name is mentioned. You know, after I posted up-thread, I thought about it, and came to the same conclusion that Lisa, no stranger to multiple marriages and having been widowed more than once, would, in irony of ironies, be the one to actually empathize with Lucinda and come to her defense about her marriage history! The truce, of course, could be temporary but a frenemy relationship should have lasted the life of the show. It would have provided both with something to do, outside of children and grandchildren. Another note about Clifford Breyer- Tonio found out about his widow, who lived in a nursing home and went to visit her to dig up information that he could try to use against Lucinda, as Sierra was divorcing Tonio and he knew his days as Lucinda's right-hand man and successor at the company were, in all likelihood, numbered. If Tonio lost his job, his Visa would be terminated and he'd likely be deported. I don't remember how much Tonio knew but I think he overheard an agitated Lucinda, talking to Ambrose on the phone, saying no one must find out why Martin killed himself. I don't remember how much information Tonio actually sussed out from Breuer's widow as she looked to have either Alzheimer's or dementia. Mrs. Breuer may have remembered some miniscule nugget of information that Tonio was able to piece together before the nurse made him leave. EDT: Breyer, not Breuer. Sorry. Auto-correct keeps "fixing" things.

Sage is Jack and Carly's daughter. Those online synopses can sometimes have errors, in addition to being confusing but, in their defense, it has to be somewhat fatiguing to have to write and condense these winding, circuitous narratives. Considering the fact that Guest killed someone, it could have been respectability politics on Lucinda's part to try to give Lily a more respected identity. It would have been interesting to explore that aspect later on. Also, I remember Lily offhandedly saying that Lucinda had been married five times. Who were the other husbands? It could have been fun to have someone suspect Lucinda of being sort of a "Black Widow", especially in the show's last decade when the show was straining for something interesting for their senior veteran characters to do.

I used to live in a working class neighborhood in Manhattan...a little village by the name of Harlem.😉 Everyone assumes that Manhattan is all Upper East Side, Upper West Side, Soho and Greenwich Village and they indeed have a huge say in Manhattan political life but people forget that Harlem has had a huge impact politically since the days of Adam Clayton Powell. In fact, no one running for any citywide office can bypass Harlem and expect to win public office. Harlem has been gentrifying, but not as fast as other areas, surely not as fast as many parts of Brooklyn. There is also Inwood/Washington Heights. All in Manhattan, all predominantly working class. Even the Lower East Side still has a sizeable working class, mainly Latino population. During this campaign, I was reading that a number of Latino voters were going for Adams and I admit that even I was a bit surprised by this at first, but I do think some of this is indeed older Latino voters, who may feel strongly about the security aspect, particularly in regards to public transportation. There were/are many who oppose Adams quite vehemently, but I am not sure how many actually got out to the polls and voted. As for Staten Island...🥴 they're gonna Staten Island. They've always been Republican country out there. Fortunately, they are the borough with the smallest population.

I think it depends on the types of media you're talking about. NYC based media (even the Metro section of The Times) definitely could not ignore Adams, he was a factor from the very beginning but if we're talking about...say, USA Today or eve Politico, well, I wouldn't be surprised by that, as Politico leaves a lot to be desired. I was surprised to see Adams referred to as some sort of neophyte whose biggest claim to fame was being Brooklyn borough president. Adams may be a lot of things but 'new' ain't one them.

I never thought Yang had much of a chance. He knew next to nothing about the architecture of how NYC could effectively be governed. It's one thing to be unschooled on certain aspects, but Yang demonstrated that he was out of depth in all aspects of NYC's governance. No, Adams benefitted from being perceived as a known entity. He has been on the margins of public life and public service for decades now. I can remember seeing him on NYC community programming since the mid 90s. People knew who he was long before he became Brooklyn borough president. He also presents himself as a combination of a working class public servant, who will understand the average New Yorker, because he is the average New Yorker (or would like to be perceived as such). He also is a former cop, in a city where crime has escalated during the pandemic, crimes against Asian/Asian-Americans have been of particular concern, as well as shootings and subway assaults. Now Maya Wiley is not out of the running, not at all, but as a progressive, it remains to be seen whether she will be tied to the "Defund The Police" mantle (though she has avoided the use of the term lately), a term that has become reviled by all but the uber-left. Adams, otoh, has cast himself as a former victim of police brutality, who then went on to speak out and create an organization that was anti police violence and mentoring Black and Brown young men. Kathryn Garcia is kind of neck and neck with Wiley in second place but I am not sure that she did herself any favors by trying to form some type of 11th Hour alliance with Andrew Yang. It certainly did Yang no good. He conceded the primary race last night. It could be weeks before the results of the Democratic mayoral primary are known, with absentee votes, etc. needing to be counted. Meanwhile, the Republican primary has already been decided with Curtis Sliwa (founder of the Guardian Angels) selected. Cannot believe he got enough votes to be the candidate, then again, it's the Republicans--the party of Giuliani and Trump.

Pretty sure I warned folks not to quickly dismiss Eric Adams in the NYC mayoral race and looky-looky. Things are still somewhat fluid and Adams, at 31% or so if the vote is still far from the 50% or above needed to win, but I have followed NYC politics enough to know darn well that someone who has been as well known in NYC public life as Adams wasn't going to fade. If I remember correctly, I warned that if you dismiss Adams, you do so at your own peril.

Intrigued to see where Ranked-choice voting leads NYC in their mayoral primary race, considered to be a defacto election. Although, tbh, nothing is a given these days.

Interesting. WADA and ITF are saying that Yastremska has committed a doping violation but they accept her explanation of how it happened and deem it to be through no fault or negligence on her part.
