Y&R: Old Articles
I remember when a lot of soap fans that hated Sharon insisted that she and Victor had "consummated" the marriage by sleeping together, though it was never shown or discussed onscreen. I was like "Nope, didn't happen if it didn't show up onscreen"😂. Now unfortunately, it seems like most of the events take place offscreen on these soaps now. Interesting though, that Y&R wanted to court controversy with the storyline but also wanted an escape hatch by not showing a physical relationship between former father and daughter-in-law onscreen. They knew that garbage was bad.

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga walked off court in the same manner yesterday. Who knows whether he'll return next year? It was a forlorn and sad exit. The French are indeed bad at scheduling matches for maximum impact.

Any Bias in the Business Of Reboots?
I'd trade all of those listed above for a reboot of ADW tbh. It's easily the most relevant and impactful. Bryton expressed the hope that something could be done with Family Matters and from what I have read everyone else in the cast is also on board. I just don't think there are any takers, in terms of production and distribution outfits. When you look at budget for many of these shows, the shows with minority majority casts were always expected to do more with less. Living Single, a frontrunner and inspiration for Friends, had a much smaller budget, less promotion and smaller salaries despite having Kim Fields and Queen Latifah who were well-known entities by then. So, if the actors don't want to return because the "money's funny", then I don't blame them. They got screwed before, they're not up for that again. How Insecure ends will be even more of a litmus test, in terms of whether the industry really has evolved or not. I have to amend what I said about FM, there don't seem to be takers so far

Is she Hilary/Amanda's sister? I could see it of she were. I tried to watch about 20 minutes or so today and besides being bored, I can see what some of you who have been describing the dialogue as stilted really mean because the dialogue just lagged and I could see the actors trying to bring it to life. Looks like Jack got his fair-haired grandson. AAPI Month misses Genoa City again.🙃

The irony is that Carly and Lily ended up being incredibly poorly written in the last year's of the show's run. Lily was written as an incredible bore as well.

Don't know what is going on with Venus but her spirit looked depressed out there. It's up to her how long she wants to be out there like this. Maybe it's not just about the coaching situation but he has done next to nothing for her. After colluding behind the scenes with RG, looks like Wimbledon is going to leave RG to stand on their own in their criticism of Osaka.

Petra just announced her withdrawal from the tournament after injuring herself during a...wait for it...press conference. Meanwhile, Naomi's sponsors (the only entity she really is contractually obligated to) are beginning to speak and guess what, tennis? They are standing by their player.

The Tennis Thread
A lot of people speaking about specifics of this don't seem to know just how dysfunctional the pro-tennis tours and industry are. People claiming that Naomi is under contract to fulfill these post-match press conferences. Wut? The only contracts Osaka has is with her sponsors and those are almost always based on her on court results. Others saying that Osaka should consult her union. Wut?! Tennis players don't have a union. Anyone who has ever read a transcript or seen one of these post-match press conferences know that these journalists don't even identify themselves before asking their questions. When the US Open wanted to live stream the journalists asking the players questions, many balked because they didn't want to be seen on the Livestream. Anyone who has read a transcript from or seen one of those post-match press conferences has heard some of the most ill-informed questions and ridiculous comments like asking women players why they don't smile or if two black players are playing each other in a match, trying to draw similarities simply because both are black and female. Picture the Hollywood Foreign Press, but tennis. Naomi suggested that perhaps the tennis press could ask better questions and they are fuming. I haven't really paid attention to these post-match press conferences in a decade (other than a clip, here and there) because most have been pointless. I haven't read a transcript in over a decade because they don't even bother to release on time (if it's so vital to people's understanding of the sport, why not?) and the questioning often offers very little insight. At worst, it is usually an effort to break down players who are already down from a loss (or confident from a win). I will never forgive them for how they treated Venus after that fatal car accident she was involved in. Why ask those questions at a post-match press conference after a tennis match? And Billie Jean King saying that because players in her day had to endure this that so should Naomi? It's so obvious that King has a business stake and she is no longer interested in the players, her concern for their well-being is conditional.

Any Bias in the Business Of Reboots?
I have been thinking about ADW in terms of why they have had no reboot despite massive public interest and I think it is likely because NBCU or the other producers don't want to go to court, if Cosby is indeed the issue. Bill Cosby, a convicted sex offender would have a tough time keeping control of ADW if other producers truly wanted to fight him in litigation. Harvey Weinstein legally had his company wrested away from him eventually, so if it came down to a court battle, Cosby would have a decent chance of losing. It seems like a lack of will on behalf of the other producers, who may not see it as worth the effort, as hard as it may seem to believe by the rest of us. I often think of the fact that most of these sitcoms with minority majority casts had smaller budgets, less promotion and usually went off the air with little fanfare or media recognition. It reminded me of the time when Black movies were said to be unappealing to 'mainstream' audiences and therefore undeserving of larger budgets for production, promotion, etc. as they would only underperform--until they didn't, consistently. I once had a screenwriter/professor tell me that a movie with two Black leads couldn't get greenlit because it was assumed that the movie wouldn't "sell". I hope those days are over in the film business but I wouldn't be surprised if that bias still existed in network television. Insecure is approaching its final season, so we'll see how that send-off happens. It could be an indicator of what, if anything has changed on the landscape.

Any Bias in the Business Of Reboots?
Yeah, that's exactly what I meant, that tptb wanted a reboot but had to settle for a reunion special because that was all they could get. For years, the actors turned down any and all offers that would be a reboot or a retrospective. I was surprised that they even said yes to a reunion this time around. I probably should have been clearer about the time period because I definitely meant l, in the last three or four years. I strain to remember shows featuring a majority Black or POC cast that have gotten more than a video on Entertainment Weekly:s social media platform. I only just found out that House Of Payne got a reboot, then again, I have only ever watched one episode of that show.

Carly reminds me a lot of that Marcy character (not the one played by Marisa Tomei) in the early 90s, the one that was involved with Linc and on occasion, in cahoots with Lucinda, aggravating Connor Walsh, especially when played by the blonde actress. Anytime I see scenes of her, I can't help but think that she could've been an early prototype for Carly. Those promos all look like they have that "soap opera effect" that tech people like to so derisively use when describing poor picture quality. Why do all the scenes in the promos in gauzy sepia and neutral tan tones.

Well damn.😔 I wish her well. RG and the rest should feel embarrassed. They handled this situation very poorly. Having every single player they could find comment their disagreement with her choice right as the tournament was getting underway seemed to be in particularly poor taste. It was meant to sting and they achieved their aim.

Any Bias in the Business Of Reboots?
In the Soaps preview thread, I was just watching some heartwarming video of Bryton James and Telma Hopkins discussing Hopkins' appearance on Y&R and they were asked about the possibility of a Family Matters reunion and both seemed hopeful for a future reunion but clearly there was nothing in production or even pre-production, which made me wonder what were the last highly popular and we'll known sitcoms with a majority Black cast to get a reboot? Some may cite The Game and House Of Payne, but to me, neither one achieved the type of mass appeal that A Different World or a Family Matters got. Neither have those shows been a part of the broadcast cultural lexicon in the way that a Living Single or A Girlfriends or an In Living Color has been. I'd even rank The Game and House Of Payne below Sister Sister. On the other hand, we've seen Full House, Punky Brewster and other shows get the reboot treatment with expectation that Sex And The City is soon to follow. They could only get a Friends reunion special, when we all know they wanted a reboot, but the reunion has had a ton of promotion, which I completely understand. It just seems like there is a disparity between the shows that get offers to reboot versus those that do not. Thoughts?

YR: Family Matters actress joins the show
Aww, that was too sweet! Although I no longer watch the show, I can say this about Y&R-- they know how the hell to promote that show! They utilize their actors to promote the product, in ways that the other soaps never seemed to learn how to do.

I'd be surprised if Netanyahu faced any jail time. It's the prosecution and banishment from ever taking public office that I was mainly speaking of. If Trump's "fortune" and influence are severely reduced, that would also be a good thing. The reality is that many people are found guilty of committing criminal and civil crimes and never see a lick of jail time. Especially if they are rich white men.

Bryton being a talent is not an unpopular opinion with me. For years, I have always believed he just never got any storyline. Dude had a quasi-imaginary girlfriend for years! People were willing to credit MM (deservedly so) for what worked with Devon and Hilary, but Bryton also had something to do with that. I think some of the source of some soap fans denigrating the character and the actor who plays him had to do with the aspect of him not being the 6 ft prototype, therefore they don't find him attractive in that aggressively hyper-masculine way that some soap fans have been trained to see as 'leading man' material. I like the 'naturalistic' style he has in his performance, yes I do think it is a choice. Some people would call it monotone or deadpan but it is a realistic delivery of speech and, in a way, stands out against the very soapy acting style (which I am not criticizing either). not everyone speaks the same, there should be room for both.- The Politics Thread
Boy, it seemed like I was posting articles about Bibi facing charges and being kicked out of office for years! So much so, that I got tired of the false alarms. The alternative in the government is not great but nonetheless at least they didn't fall for the usual scare tactics that Netanyahu uses to cling to power. Speaking of Bibi, you know who else soon won't be able to use the shield of 'head of state' to shield himself from facing criminal and civil charges? Take a guess.😏- ALL: Soap Stars - Where are they now?

For as much as Dianne Morales clearly had the ability to build an enthusiastic base, I knew her campaign would stall at some point because like many far-left candidates, as enthusiastic as that base may be, it is still smaller than Democratic candidates who are closer to the center, even in a city like NYC. Having said all that, how the New York Times reports on women candidates, particularly women candidates of color always gives me more than pause-- I tend to develop a serious case of side-eye because the coverage is usually littered with similar hallmarks, if not the exact same descriptors. A campaign in crisis, via poor management and dereliction of duty, inattention. Still, when one your top campaign managers calls for the resignation of your campaign, clearly there are problems. I think that might be 'all she wrote' for the Morales for Mayor 2021 campaign.- ALL: Soap Stars - Where are they now?
