The main reason was probably the intense response from their fans, although that didn't stop GL from still nixing other pairings. I wonder if JFP having to do that pairing (beyond Matt/Lucy I think some have said Josh/Vanessa was the plan) is why she immediately broke up an older woman/younger man pairing, Donna and Matt, in an ugly way, upon her arrival at AW. In theory I don't have a problem with Dinah resenting Vanessa, there should have been good story, but Vanessa was rarely if ever given a fair chance to show her strength or point of view, and I just did not think Wendy Moniz was a strong or sympathetic enough actress for the inconsistent way Dinah was written. I don't think she found her footing until Rauch decided to make the character an outright bitch. Mindy and Dinah were both in town for a few months in 1995, but I don't know if they ever interacted. By that point I'm not even sure how much time Mindy spent around Vanessa. Beyond the other worst stories mentioned, I would include the Lonitrat fiasco with Roger/Dinah/Hart and the stories given to Griffen (nearly sleeping with his own daughter and then having himself shot for the cause). Such a horrible use of Geoffrey Ewing.

That was talked about in the politics thread. Not sure if it is best left there, to be honest...although she was certainly on ATWT. I'll just say I'm relieved I was never a fan and that I don't know what Heather Rattray's politics are. @Soapsuds Thanks. Such a lovely photo.

Thanks for the article. I liked Morgan pointing out just how important her character was on Search. And liked hearing more about these shows. I wonder if any of Helpmates is available.

North Carolina is gone but hopefully Stein can win and they can get a few seats in the legislature to stop a veto proof majority.

Thanks! Much as I dislike the idea of Vanessa being cast aside for Lucy, the older woman just good for a forbidden fling, in the long run that relationship and Dinah's return hurt her a great deal. All the sharpness you see in that outburst at the end, the precision in Maeve's acting that made her so special, was blunted. It took so many years - all the way into the late '00s - to finally see that again. An interesting choice to make the flashbacks look like something from the '30s, but that only adds to the disturbing feeling of the scenes.

@dc11786 Thanks for the rundown. Nice to hear some actors who by that time were barely getting fresh material from their soaps (like Bauer or Polen) getting a chance at something new. I wonder if Ariana Munker could share any details about the show.

For anyone who wasn't able to get the Archive version working, the same uploader put the episode on Youtube days ago. @Manny And a promo I had never seen.

If you want to repost there: I never even knew he was on a soap. So much of this (including turning a book about domestic violence into a frothfest and spend your press tour promoting your husband's movie and your shampoo line) has reminded me why i don't like her or her husband.- Guiding Light Discussion Thread
I didn't even remember a temp Vanessa recast. Probably for the best as I was still sour over the Billy recast... This story and Julie plotting to steal Frank had me hooked around this point - once they ended I began drifting again which is why I only just have half-memories of what happens through late '94 up to summer '95. Everything about the custody battle was riveting and involved such rich character dynamics. Probably the only custody battle I felt invested in on a soap. If you get to the episodes where Vanessa has flashbacks of herself when she was pregnant with Dinah, I'd be interested to see that again, as I'm not entirely sure how much was real and how much I've made up in my head.- DAYS: Cady McClain back as Jennifer Horton Devereaux
Or Women of the House when Valerie Mahaffey and Julie Hagerty switched in and out. Maybe they can take over as Jennifer.- The Politics Thread
Soaps and reality TV are both places where you find many more Republicans than you ever want to hear from, but I notice the more out of work former soap actors get the more extreme they become. I suppose they have nothing to lose. Me too. It serves any number of purposes for Trump. - gets any positive Harris news out of the headlines - makes him look like a victim - stirs up more talking points about how other countries are terrified of him and want Democrats to win (and this has long been a talking point with Trump about Iran) - the media will take his word as gospel, all while not even printing any of the details To be honest, I also have my doubts about the "bitch" story. Not that he says it - he has likely said much worse - but because the framing also benefits Trump. The people who are disgusted are already not voting for him. It riles up the supporters who crave the red meat, it riles up the people who claim to dislike him but praise him as a martyr and chide the media for spreading gossip (even as they spread any lies and gossip about Harris or Walz with glee), and it allows the media to run the type of pieces they love to run about female Democrats - finding anybody off the record to talk about how she threw a shoe at them. And if Kamala Harris does speak up about the story, or if any Democrat does, they will be jumped all over as too soft and all the rest.- The Politics Thread
I've been a fan of any number of actors who turned out to be terrible people, and - not to be hyperbolic - sometimes it really hurts. I am so relieved I never cared for Martha Byrne. "The GOP saved my family." As a whole? As a collective? If I said last night a DJ saved my life, will I be able to get hundreds of likes on Twitter too?- As The World Turns Discussion Thread
I wonder if they tried to contact Suzanne Davidson. The Betsy they cast was perfectly fine but really was just there - extremely generic. They may have been better off not having her return. I wonder why they did not try Sallows again when Betsy briefly returned in 1994. I can't even remember that Betsy - I don't think I have ever watched most of that material. Another character who was painted as a deadbeat/bad mother by ATWT in later years due to lazy writing.- GH: Casting Call for "Lauren" ⏤ Code for Lulu Recast?

Thanks @SoapDope. Nice to see how they did flashbacks at the time, and the bittersweet moment with Miranda and Carol. As is often the case with Carol material I feel like there's more of a sincerity and depth and less of the malaise of many other parts of the canvas.- Loving/The City Discussion Thread

Parker is one of those bitter has beens we are meant to support just because she still works at a dying paper. NYT pushing propaganda and doing cleanup work for yet another day.- Primetime Soaps
Thanks. The story about the actress on CPW who wouldn't die is amusing. Not sure if Relativity counts as a primtime soap but it doesn't seem to get a lot of attention and the pilot, possibly more, is being put on Youtube.- The Politics Thread
You're right. You can see how nothing she would have said mattered based on the interview with the two hecklers: https://www.motherjones.com/politics/2024/08/kamala-harris-hecklers-protest-detroit-rally-interview-gaza-michigan/ I do appreciate her trying to say something beyond "do you want Trump to win," because even though that's the truth, it plays right into the hands of these narcissists. But ultimately they are impossible to reach, so the best to hope for is winning without them.- Guiding Light Discussion Thread
